DREAM JOBS: HOW TO MAKE A LIVING DOING WHAT YOU LOVE

John Allen is Glen Helen's man with the dozer, water truck, backhoe, tractor and grader

JOHN ALLEN
GLEN HELEN TRACK MAINTENANCE

STARTING POINT:
“I started riding in the hills in Del Rosa, California. My first job in the motorcycle industry was at Honda World in the parts department. I ended up at Glen Helen when I heard they needed somebody to work out there. I wanted to try something different. I’ve been here for 10 years.”

THE JOB:
“I’m a jack-of-all-trades at Glen Helen. I drive the water truck, run the dozer and work on the equipment. I didn’t operate any heavy equipment when I came out here. Take the motor grader—I didn’t have a clue about how to operate a grader, but the late Dan Moore told me, ‘Here it is. There’s the dirt. Go practice.’ I struggled for a little while, but eventually I got to where I could almost fall asleep on it. It was just seat time. The best thing about my job is when riders come up and say ‘Hey, great track.’”
