VIP DATA LOGGER WITH RISK RACE GATE
WHAT IS IT? It’s a system that allows you to acquire and analyze motorcycle and lap/split time data. When looking at the technology of Formula One or Moto GP racing, motocross is more Barney Rubble than Valentino Rossi. On high-end race machines, sophisticated sensors are used to gather real-time data on suspension position, wheel speed, hydraulic pressure, exhaust gas temperature and even brake pad wear. Motocrossers can’t help but be a little jealous.
Enter the Durtronix VIP Data Logger. It collects engine rpm, rear wheel speed and coolant temperature data. It can calculate which gear the bike is in, measure lap times (and even do up to six different split times) and, as an added bonus, it can be coupled with Risk Racing’s Holeshot Starting Gate to provide response times to within one hundredth of a second.
The MXA wrecking crew convinced Durtronix to let us test the VIP Data Logging system.

WHAT STANDS OUT? Here’s a list of things that stand out with the Durtronix VIP Data Logging system.
(1) Firefly. The Firefly is an infrared transmitter that is placed on the side of the track at the same height as the VIP unit. It allows the VIP to collect lap or split times. Up to six Fireflies can be used, and the more splits you have in a lap, the easier it is to pinpoint track position and analyze data. There is also a Firefly transmitter that can be coupled with the Risk Race Gate to measure reaction times.
(2) Software. The software displays data on one, two or four charts that allow you to zoom, scroll, plot data points, add comments and choose which info is displayed. Rear wheel speed, rpm, gear selection, coolant temperature and lap times can be displayed. With practice, the user can relate the data on screen to locations around the track.
(3) Usage. The most effective use of the VIP Data Logger is to get split times on sections of the track so you can try to find the fastest way around the track.
(4) Risk Race Gate. When coupled with the Risk Race Gate, the VIP unit can precisely measure your response times, shifting points and rpm effect. That’s way cool.
(5) Compatibility. Durtronix equipment is compatible with PCs running Windows 98 and later and all 2006 to 2009 Japanese bikes.
WHAT’S THE SQUAWK? We have some issues: (1) The routing path of the rear wheel speed sensor by the midpipe requires a creative fix.(2) Although simple by computer standards, the entire process is complicated for neophytes. It’s best to get a 13-year girl to help you.
Factory teams already use data acquisition, but in the future the technology will trickle down. As it sits, the VIP Data Logger is great for lap/splits times, but beyond that it is a lot of work for minimal usable info.
