Dear MXA,
My front wheel bearing feels rough, but I plan to buy a new bike next week. Can I still ride the bike even though the bearing is gritty?

The hardcore answer is no, but you are the ultimate judge of how bad the bearing feels. If you judge it to be not too bad, take these four steps: (1) Pry off the rubber seal. (2) Spray the bearing out with contact cleaner, but don't rotate the bearing until it has been lubricated with oil. (3) Oil the bearing and rotate the bearing to work the oil in. (4) Pack the bearing with grease. Pack even more grease than possible and reinstall the outer seal. This will allow a tired bearing to go one more day.
