Dear MXA,
Why does MXA always recommend lowering the oil height in forks to make them better. What does that do?

First, we don’t always recommend lowering the oil height, but on certain bikes we find it beneficial (especially when paired with stiffer fork springs). Oil height in the forks determines the volume of the trapped air space inside the forks. The compression of this air space is gradual and can be felt in the midstroke. Lessening the air space (adding oil) will make the forks stiffer from the middle of the stroke on. Lowering the oil height will make your forks softer from midstroke on. Oil height has a negligible effect on the first four inches of travel.
