ASK THE MXPERTS: WHEN IT COMES TO CLUTCH PLATES, WHAT’S BEST?

What’s better, steel or aluminum clutch plates?
   Dear MXA,
What’s better? Steel or aluminum clutch plates? I have a choice and I want to make the best decision.

Better is a relative term—and it depends on what you want out of your clutch. If you are interested in snappier throttle response and a quicker rev, aluminum clutch plates can be used to reduce rotating mass and increase throttle response. On the other hand, aluminum plates tend to wear quicker than steel plates (and the aluminum particles contaminate the oil). If durability is important, you would be better off with steel clutch plates (which also add a little extra flywheel effect—very little).
