My roommate doesn't plan on wthacing LOST anymore, either, which makes me sad. I think LOST started out as one of the best shows and I came to it during the second season and had to watch Season One on DVD nonstop for two days just to catch up. I love the show. Embarrassing admission: I haven't been this attached to a show since I watched The O.C. during high school. And I won't say it's as good as it used to be. Not when people like Smiley are bothered by character motivations and gimmicks. Not when people look at me and say, I tried to watch it I saw a couple episodes but it lost me. So obviously the fanbase is weakening. Doesn't that happen with every show over time? I honest-to-god still love the show as much as I always have. Some of the points that Smiley made were discussed by another guy named Chris such as Charlie's sacrifice and the inescapable ocean currents and I just wanted to add to that. Not because I think I'm right, just because I remember it differently. Also, it's like you called out a spelling mistake in my essay for a correctly spelled non-English word and I'm simply showing you that not all words come from a Merriam-Webster English dictionary.I distinctly remember that the Others gradually began to dislike Ben. When they cut back from Ben and Jack and showed the Others discussing why they didn't kill the hostages, I'm pretty sure they called Ben a crazy motherfucker. The Others end up getting killed instead. The reason they didn't kill the hostages before Hurley showed up is because Ben hasn't been the honest straight-thinking leader that they want him to be. Ben follows the unpredictable orders of The Island (or Jacob) and doesn't always explain himself, which is why the Others have a hard time trusting him. This is why they didn't shoot the hostages. They aren't robots. They didn't think killing the hostages was necessary because Ben was grasping at straws. I think that when the Others didn't kill the hostages, that was a crucial moment in the relationship between the Survivors and the Others. It wasn't the first time I saw a glimpse of humanity in the Others. The tragic turn, really, is that Hurley ruins any chance of dialogue and understanding between the two groups. Plus, Sawyer shoots that one guy. And so then you have to step back. The Survivors respond with instant brutality while the Others spared their lives. And then I suppose I should try and throw in my two-cents about the Fast-Forward scenes. All that I can say is that I love them. I didn't like it at first I thought the finale with Jack and Kate at the airport was a horrible cliffhanger but after an entire season of them It makes sense. In the way that Flashbacks work to figure out what past event motivates Character X to make Decision Y, the Flash Forwards work to show the result of the decision that Character X makes on the Island. And by showing us scenes from the future out of chronological order, you leave gaps in the plot line that need to be filled. Like showing Locke in the casket.
