2017 KTM 450SXF

2017KTM -450SXF-leftEquipped with air forks, traction control and softer rear shock spring, the 2017 KTM 450SXF weighs in at approximately 224-pounds. For comparison, a 2016 Suzuki RM-Z450 weighs 240 pounds. Click on images to enlarge

2017ktm450sxf-engine-leftThe 450SXF has the most unique looking exhaust system of any bike made. The two-stroke-like cones encase the resonance chamber. The rear brake pedal is now 10mm longer to accommodate a wider range of feet. Note the hex-shaped chromoly steel tubing.

2017KTM450SXF-right-frontThere are three available maps, two of which can be activated by a handlebar-mounted controller. All the KTM four-strokes have launch control and, new for 2017, is traction control for slippery dirt.

2017ktm450SXF-engineThe aluminum head stays are 60-grams lighter than last year’s steel head stays.

2017 KTM 350SXF

2017KTM350SXFfrontLast year MXA complained that the stock shock spring on the 450SXF and 350SXF were too stiff for the target audience. We switched from the stock 48 N/m spring to a 45 spring (from the 250SXF). For 2017 KTM has changed all of their spring rates to better suit their customers.

2017KTM-handlebarNew handlebar mounts and redesigned top triple clamp dial in added stiffness on every 2017 KTM.

2017ktm350sxf-rightThe 350SXF engine is built on the 250SXF architecture, which makes it a couple pounds lighter than the 450SXF, but still heavier than the 250SXF.

2017KTM-AERforkWP’s AER 48mm air fork save over three pounds of weight over last year’s 4CS spring fork. Additionally, the WP design is simple, easy to use and, based on our experiences with the 2016 Factory Edition, a tremendously improved fork. KTM supplies an air pump with every 2017 model.

2017ktm350sxf-engineEven though the 350SXF gives up 100cc to its competitors 450cc bikes, it makes competitive horsepower—and has its rev limiter set at 13,400 rpm.

2017ktm250sxf-aboveLast year the 250SXF came with a 45 N/m shock spring, which most MXA test riders used on the 350SXF and 450SXF. For 2017, the 250SXF will get an even softer rear spring to work in conjunction with the air forks and shock valving.

2017 KTM 250SX TWO-STROKE

2017KTM250SX-leftsideLast year KTM didn’t produce a new generation 250 two-stroke to go along with the then-new 125SX, 150SX, 250SXF, 350SXF and 450SXF. The new frame wouldn’t accept the last-generation engine and KTM wanted another year to fine tune the next-generation 250SX powerplant. The result is a totally new 250 two-stroke for 2017—with an engine and frame that fit like a glove.

2017ktm250SX-engineleftNothing is shared between the 2017 engine and the 2016 250SX engine. The cases are totally new, there is a new counter-balancer and the five-speed transmission has been reworked.

2017KTM250SX-cylinderThe new cylinder features twin-valve controlled power valves that can be easily adjusted for a more tunable power output.

2017ktm250sxrightsidestuddioThe 2017 KTM 250SX takes advantage of all of the set-up secrets that the engineers have learned from the 250SXF four-stroke over the last few years. That translates into a new frame, news plastic, new suspension and new engine.

2017minunicarbThe venerable Keihin PWK has been dropped from KTM’s 2017 two-stroke line-up and replaced with a 38mm Mikuni TMX carb.

The 250SX two-strokes uses KTM’s Belleville washer clutch—which uses one cupped washer as a clutch spring. It is also used on the 450SXF.
