Ken De Dycker, who finished third in the 2013 FIM 450 world Championships just behind Tony Cairoli and Clement Desalle, will now miss even more GPs. DeDycker has been waiting on a wrist injury to heal, but has now broke his foot. He has missed the first three GPs and will probably miss at least the next four.

CYRILLE DESPRES WILL SWITCH TO PEUGEOT FOR 2015 DAKAR

despresyamahapeugett

Cyrille Despres finish fourth in this year’s Dakar Rally for Yamaha.

After the ballyhoo of Cyrille Despres leaving the KTM rally team to head up the Yamaha effort in 2014, the news that he is leaving Yamaha to drive a car in Dakar for Peugeot Sport next year is surprising. Despres is a five-time Dakar Champion on bikes and will follow in the footsteps of Stephane Peterhansel, who also left Yamaha to move into cars. Despres will team with former World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz at Peugeot. Despres said, “It was a natural process. When you do the Dakar on a motorbike, you can spend up to 10 hours on your own every day, so you have plenty of time to reflect on things. The idea dawned on me during January’s Dakar. Then Peugeot came up with this incredible opportunity. I weighed  the pros and cons – and it’s a dream come true and the beginning of a new life!”

JOSH CACHIA TO MISS AUSSIE NATIONAL SEASON OPENER

Penrite Oil Honda Racing’s Josh Cachia will sit out the opening round of the Australian National Championship at Broadford State Motorcycle Sports Complex this weekend. Cachia has been been recovering from a wrist injury suffered last year and says that he is not ready to race yet. Josh said, “My plan was always to get this fixed, then come back 100% fully fit at the start of the season and fight for the 250 title. It is frustrating because I want to be out there more than anything, but I can’t force this and risk further injury. I want to be able to come straight out and win races.” Teammate Cody Cooper will make his Penrite Oil Honda debut in the 450 class on Sunday.

JEREMY McGRATH FORMS HIS OWN RACING TEAM

Seven-time AMA Supercross Champion Jeremy McGrath has formed Jeremy McGrath Motorsports to run his offroad truck program. Jeremy debuted his new team at last week’s Lucas Oil Offroad Racing series in Arizona—where he finished 11th in Saturday’s Pro2 race (with a flat front tire) and then DNF’ed Sunday’s race with a bad alternator. Jeremy said, “The weekend was not what we had hoped for but, we learned a lot and I feel like my team and the Loctite/Fuel Off-Road Pro 2 will be competing for wins at Rounds 3 and 4 at Lake Elsinore. This team is here for the long haul and we plan to be a contender at each and every race.” For more info about Jeremy’s new team go to www.jeremymcgrath2.com.

PALA, ELSINORE & SOUTHWICK CLOSED…FOR NOW

map

These are direction to Pala Raceway, but don’t use them for now.

Press release: “Pala Raceway is still closed to the public for right now. We are working on getting back open. To go along with our electrical problem, there was a new insurance policy demanded to be put in place before the Raceway can reopen to the public. Two of three policies are currently in place; a third policy had fundamental language changes requested before approval. So the process had to be restarted and had to go back through the underwriting process, which unfortunately takes time. Our legal and insurance team are working on it, and trying to get you guys back riding at Pala Raceway as soon as we can.”

On a side note: Lake Elsinore Motocross Park has also been closed for several months, but there is a report that it will reopen on Friday, April 11. Do not go there without confirmation.

Meanwhile in the continuing saga of former AMA National tracks, Southwick 338 sent out this missive of hope: “We have been asked a lot of questions about the status of Southwick but at this point there aren’t a lot of concrete answers. There are numerous issues and we are working hard to go through the process of resolving them. Unfortunately, we had no idea about most of the preexisting issues when we signed the lease so it has taken some time to come up to speed as we work through the challenges. There are a lot of positive signs and our goal is to have a couple of races late in the season and we are optimistic that will become a reality. “We have been asked a lot of questions about the status of Southwick but at this point there aren’t a lot of concrete answers.           WHAT ADAM CIANCIARULO’S SHOULDER SURGERY MEANS

ZXadamsshoulder

There is a silver lining to Adam’s injury, but it doesn’t make the heartbreak any less.

When Adam Cianciarulo’s shoulder dislocated three times in Toronto every racer in the stands and watching on TV who had suffered the same injury knew that this was the end of Adam’s 2014 Supercross season. Shoulders that pop out that many times are not going to heal themselves—so it comes as no surprise to his fellow sufferers that Adam will miss the next three to four months to have his shoulder repaired.

Riders who suffer repeat dislocations usually require surgery. Following surgery, extensive rehabilitation and physical therapy are necessary for healing. The potential dangers of not having the surgery, when it is indicated, are the risk of more frequent dislocations and permanent damage to the shoulder.

Given that Adam is only 17-years-old, this is the best time to have the surgery. There is no reason to ride injured and run the risk of really damaging the shoulder or getting hurt should the shoulder dislocate over a big jump. Additionally, Adam has had a great season and proven what he is capable of. He has a long-term contract and is in no danger of losing his ride (which is not always the case with riders who undergo the knife). Adam has a long career ahead of him and the heartbreak of losing this title will be mitigated by the fact that most 450 Supercross Champions don’t even list 250 East/West wins on their resumes.

If there is a silver lining to the timing of Adam’s injury it is that it came when he only had 120 points in the Championship chase. Why is that a good thing? Because if he had 135 points he would lose one year of eligibility in the 250 Supercross class (and you can only earn 130 points three times before you must move out of the class). That may not seem important to Adam at the moment, but it is important to Pro Circuit and Kawasaki. Read the rule below:

JEFFREY HERLINGS TO MISS BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX WITH A SHOULDER INJURY

ZXherlingsqa

Jeffrey might need surgery.

Although KTM isn’t saying anything beyond that muscle damage to Jeffrey Herlings’ shoulder will keep him from going to Brazil this weekend. Word on the street is that his shoulder needs surgery, but that he wants to wait two weeks until the Italian GP on April 13 to see if he can ride. Herlings has been accident prone as of late and is also prone to ignore his doctor’s advice.

If Jeffrey can race in Italy he will quickly make up the points he will lose in Brazil. Herlings won last year’s 250 World Championship by 135 points and that was after missing two GPs. He currently has a 23-point lead over Dylan Ferrandis (and that was achieved in only two races), so the worst he will be after Brazil is 27 points back (assuming that Ferrandis wins both motos). A healthy Herlings could make that gap up in less than three races—if his shoulder doesn’t need surgery.

RYAN VILLOPOTO EXPLAINS HIS TORONTO ILLNESS…SORT OF

ZXDAVOLS1491

Ryan is a medical mystery man.

“Hey everyone. Just wanted to send out a little message to let everyone know I am all good now and back on track after a crazy weekend. I woke up sat morning with gnarly stomach pain so bad that I couldn’t even stand up. Was able to push myself into a cab to get to the stadium to see if the docs at asterisk could help me out but one look at me and they sent me in the ambulance to the hospital. After hours of enduring the pain and laying in a hospital bed trying to get some answers, the docs found nothing! Crazy to be in that much pain and they tell you your fine.

“At that point I just knew you had to pull it together and try and make the night happen. Rolled into the stadium at 6:30 with just enough time to put my gear on and make it to opening ceremonies. Pretty sketchy knowing my first lap on the track was gonna be in a race, but it is what it is. We made it work and came away with some decent points on the night, so all in all it was a good night. Can’t say thanks enough to all the people who made it happen and the fans for sticking by me. Next week it’s on! Back to the real RV.”

ELI TOMAC RETURNED TO RACING IN ST. LOUIS — GETS SIXTH

ZXtomacback

Eli will be coming back again. He has missed 7 of the first 12 races due to injury.

Eli Tomac returned to racing in St. Louis at the Edward Jones Dome on Saturday night (after missing the last three event with a persistent shoulder injury) and finished sixth. Tomac had finished second at his most recent Supercross race, in Indianapolis on March 1, before aggravating a shoulder injury in Daytona and being forced to sit out three races—this on top of missing the first part of the series after crashing at A1.

TREY CANARD MAKES HIS 2014 DEBUT IN ST. LOUIS WITH A FIFTH

ZXCanardST

Trey has missed the first 12 rounds of 2014 with a broken arm.

When a rider sits on the sidelines nursing an injury, he doesn’t lose speed—just fitness. Luckily, a broken arm, like Trey Canard got before the season started, doesn’t stop a rider from endurance training. Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Trey Canard proved that when he finished fifth in St. Louis in his first race of the 2014 season. Canard got a ninth place start and dropped as far back as 12th before moving close enough to take advantage of the bad luck that befell Ryan Dungey and Justin Brayton on the penultimate lap. It’s good to have Trey back, especially in light of Wil Hahn leaving the series with a broken arm.

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: HARDLINE TREAD DOCTOR SNIPER KIT

TREAD2

The Tread Doctor is a heated tire cutting tool that can cut new edges on the face of knobs or be used as a grooving tool (with the Sniper kit).

VERDICT: This is five-star product for a backyard engineer who loves to fine tune his bike. For MXA’s tastes, grooving is a better alternative than vertical cutting. Grooves provides extra edges for acceleration and braking. The Sniper kit does a great job.

TREAD1

DIGITS: $79.99 (Tread Doctor with Sniper kit), $69.99 (Sniper kit only), $59.99 (Tread Doctor without Sniper kit), $14.99 (replacement cutting blade), $13.99 (12 pack of grooving blades)–www.hardlineproducts.com or (805) 581-4700.
