Legal or illegal? The Kawasaki KX450F is legal in AMA pro racing.

The following equipment list shows all motorcycles which are approved for 2011 AMA Motocross and Supercross. Don’t try to make sense of it, but understand that motorcycles that are more than five years old are not eligible for AMA Pro racing (which means that any bike older than 2006 cannot be raced). These rules don’t apply to local or amateur racing.

Legal or illegal? The KTM 150SX is illegal, but for some reason the 2006 KTM 125SX is legal.

Under the AMA Supercross/Motocross Approval Application only a “manufacturer” can apply a bike for homologation (not a rider or dealer). Additionally, the applications says that there must be 400 units of that model available at U.S. dealerships. No one knows if this rule is even remotely enforced and there were rumors that it would be changed, but the Approval Application still lists 400 units.

The 400 bikes must be in the country by June 1 of the current season?which means that a manufacture could race the complete Supercross season with a works bike…and then on June 1 introduce a less sophisticated production version. Verification of the 400 units is done by notarized bills of lading.

Is the Husqvarna TC450 legal? No.

Starting in 2012, the AMA originally stated that the 400 units must be in the country by March 1. Why? Because this rule has been abused. Teams can only write off 8 units for the race team as part of the 400…not 100. But, since then they have decided that only 200 of the 400 have to be “in country” by March 1, 2012.

A manufacturer can race an early release model (say a 2012 model in the 2011 series) if the manufacturer applies to homologation 15 days before the first event the bike will appear in and if 400 units are available…within 90 days of the homologation application date.

Is the Husqvarna TC250 legal? Yes, but just last year’s model, not this years.

The following items must be supplied to AMA Racing by the manufacturer for technical identification purposes. The parts and information must be delivered to the AMA offices no later than 30 days prior to the first event that the new model will compete in (15 days for early model homologation). If the parts and information have not been delivered to the AMA by the first event that the new model will compete in, the motorcycle used in competition may be impounded until they are available.

    1. Cylinder
    2. Cylinder Head (4 strokes only)
    3. Crank case
    4. Frame
    5. Swing Arm
    6. Factory service manual (hard copy or CD)
    7. Factory parts list (hard copy or CD)
    8. Factory sales brochures (5)
    9. Frame drawing showing steering head angle and swing arm pivot location.

Gas Gas isn’t legal by a long shot and exposes the fact that the AMA’s 400 unit requirement isn’t realistic in the current motorcycle climate. You’d be surprised how many motorcycles don’t meet the 400 unit limit…and some have been raced…and a few have won titles.

This list of legal bikes for the 2011 season is provisional and additional manufacturers could be added by submitting their bikes for homologation…and paying the AMA a $3000 fee.

The Honda CRF450 is legal…as long as you don’t try to race a 2002, 2003, 2004 or 2005 model.
