WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN HALF THE CLASS GETS KICKED OUT?

TonusBRA_2014

Arnaud Tonus has one shot at 250 glory in 2014 and then he will have one shot at finding a 450 ride in 2015 or he will be in the unemployment line.

You can only race the 250 World Championship until you are 23 years old. After that age you have to move to the 450 Grand Prix series. Next year in Europe, Jose Butron, Arnaud Tonus, Glenn Coldenhoff, Jeremy Seewer, Alek Tonkov, Christophe Charlier, Alessandro Lupino, Luke Styke and Romain Febvre will all be ineligible to return to the 250 class. And, it is most likely that Jeffrey Herlings will move to the 450 class also (even though he won’t be 23). The riders on this list made up seven of the top ten at last week’s Italian 250 Grand Prix.

Where are these riders going to find good rides in the 450 class. Under Youthstream rules, the 450 class is limited to 30 riders. To make room for the 23-year-olds, over 30 percent of the current 450 riders would have to lose their jobs to make way. If the 23-year-olds don’t get 450 rides their careers are over at the World Championship level—they will be trapped in no man’s land. Unless they move to America (or in Luke Styke’s case, return to Australia).

MXA admits a bias on this issue—because we have always thought that the 23-year-old rule was stupid. It degrades the 250 riders to the ranks of second-class citizen and demeans the skills and championships of former 125cc World Champions Gaston Rahier, Harry Everts, Eric Geboers, Alessio Chiodi, Michele Rinaldi and Pekka Vehkonnen.

Now you might think that the AMA has an identical rules, but that isn’t completely accurate. In the 250 East/West Supercross series a rider can be forced to move to the 450 class, but there are differences: (1) The 250 East/West series are not a National Championship classes—they are regional series. (2) A rider can stay until he is 89 years old if he wants. (3) Riders can, and do point out, of the 250 East/West but only because the 250 East/West series is a development class (and it isn’t easy to point out as proven by the fact that Martin Davalos has been in the class for 9 years). (4) Even if a rider is no longer eligible in the 250 East/West he can still race the AMA 250 Nationals.

In the AMA National Championships a rider can stay in the 250 class as long as he likes and win as many Championships as he is capable off. The 250 and 450 classes are considered equals in the hierarchy of American motocross—as well they should be since the manufacturers sell as many 250s as they do 450s.

The large number of riders who are going to be kicked out of the 250 GP class in 2015 will bring the 23-year-old rule in to the headlines—and there will be pressure to change it. And we think it should be changed.
