MXA TEAM TESTED: HANN RACING COMPONENTS SUPERLITE TITANIUM FOOTPEGS

Hann pegs are 55mm-wide, one-piece, cast 6AL-4V titanium pegs that are an alternative to the stock Honda footpegs.

WHAT STANDS OUT?
Here’s a list of things that stand out with Hann Racing Components titanium footpegs.

(1) Problem. The CRF250 and CRF450 have the dubious honor of having the worst stock footpegs of any modern bikes. The OEM pegs are extremely narrow (failing to offer a wide contact patch for the rider’s boots); they quickly pack with mud, which negates the idea that footpegs are supposed to offer grip; and the stock teeth wear out so quickly that they offer minimal traction.

(2) Solution. There are a lot of aftermarket footpegs out there, but the MXA wrecking crew has had long experience with the Hann Racing Components titanium pegs. We first tested them when they were private-labeled on the MDK Hondas back in 2007. Since then, we have run Hann footpegs on our CRFs every year. They are also available for Yamahas, Kawasakis and KTMs.

(3) Titanium.
As a rule, the MXA wrecking crew is not all that fond of Ti pegs. The 1/4 pound weight savings over stainless steel doesn’t amount to a hill of beans with the footpegs so low on the frame, and the cost is astronomical compared to steel. But, because of Ti’s properties, the Hann pegs are light, sleek, sharp, self-cleaning and wide. This is a status-conscious product…not a sensible one.

(4) Installation.
Swapping the Hann footpegs out for the stock units was a piece of cake. Simply remove the cotter pin and tap out the retaining pin, then remove the stock footpeg, replace the retaining pin through the Hann footpeg and spring, and install the cotter pin. It took us all of five minutes to make the change.

(5) Craftsmanship. We were impressed by the craftsmanship of the titanium footpegs.

(6) Traction.
The stock CRF250 footpegs are 45mm wide, which is a far cry from the 55mm-wide Hann behemoths. A wider footpeg equals greater arch stability and traction. Unlike other pegs, which have razor-sharp teeth, the Hann pegs bridge the gap between the gummy stockers and the boot-shredding competition. We like this design, because replacing boot soles is a daunting task and the pegs are self-cleaning.
