WHAT STANDS OUT? Here’s a list of things that stand out with Works Connection’s tach/hour meter.
(1) Size. The Works Connection hour meter is about half the size of the majority of available hour meters. The small size (1 inch by 2 inches) is a plus, because 98 percent of the time you have no interest in what the hour meter says?thus it shouldn’t be imposing.
(2) Hour meter. When the engine isn’t running, the Works Connection tach/hour meter works as a basic Hobbs meter. It keeps track of how many hours your engine has run so that you can accurately keep track of service intervals on engine oil, air filters, oil filters and rings. It can record up to 99,999 total hours?which we are pretty sure you won’t get to.
(3) Tach. When the engine is running, the Works Connection meter turns into a tachometer that displays the current rpm. This is great for setting the fuel screw or finding a point on the power curve that needs work. Additionally, the tach displays not only current rpm, but the highest rpm you reached when riding the bike last, which will stay on the screen for 10 seconds after shutting the engine off. (4) Power source. Hour meters do not use batteries, and they are not connected to your bike’s ignition. An hour meter does not have an on/off switch, either. It gets its power from the impulse of the spark plug. All you have to do is wrap the hour meter’s single lead wire around the spark-plug wire. If you have a coil-in-cap ignition, wrap the hour meter’s lead wire around the coil, not the spark-plug wire.
(5) Fuel injection. The Works Connection hour meter comes with the pulses per rev set at 1.0 pulses per revolution (PPR). A fuel-injected engine needs the meter set at 0.5 PPR. You do this by pressing a blue button on the back of the meter until it reads “PPr0.5.”
(6) Mounting. The Works Connection tach/hour meter comes with peel-and-stick two-sided tape so that you can mount the meter on the side of the steering head gusset. A better choice is Works Connections’s optional $14.95 aluminum bracket that allows you to mount the Works Connection hour meter to the front gas-tank-mounting bolt (on bikes that have front-mounted gas tanks).
