RYAN VILLOPOTO SWITCHES TO ATLAS NECK BRACES

Ryan Villopoto will make the switch to the Atlas Brace for 2013 and beyond. Ryan said, “From the first time I tried the Atlas Brace, I knew I loved it. I’ve worn neck braces for a long time, but nothing with the features or level of comfort my Atlas Brace has. I had a choice for what I wanted to wear, and I chose to switch to Atlas.” Villopoto joins factory Kawasaki teammate Jake Weimer in the Atlas camp. ASK THE MXPERTS: 2013 MXA 250 SHOOTOUT?

Dear MXA,
When is MXA going to put up the 2013 250 Shootout. I don’t want to give you guys a fat head, but MXA is the only magazine that I trust when it comes to bike tests. What is the delay?

There is no delay. The 2013 MXA 250 Four-Stroke Shootout is in the December 2012 issue of MXA. It has been out for six weeks and has just recently been replaced on the news stand with the January 2013 issue?that mag contains the 2013 MXA 450 Shootout. As for the web tests, next Monday (December 24) we will run the 2013 Honda CRF250 test. On December 31 will will run the 2013 Suzuki RM-Z250 test. And, on January 8, 2013, we will run the complete 2013 MXA 250 Shootout. But, you could have read it in the mag a long time ago.

ASK THE MXPERTS: LOOKING FOR PUBLICITY

Dear MXA,
My company is sponsoring a small privateer motocross team, but we don’t seem to get any publicity. What is step one in getting recognition for the effort and money we are putting out?

First, you might have put the name of your team and its riders in your email. Second, every team does pre-season photo shoots of their riders, but most of them hold on to the photos like they are gold. With only two weeks to go before the season starts some factory teams haven’t released photos of their teams or bikes yet. If you have portrait and action photos of your riders you should supply them to every media outlook (and don’t forget to include your team logo). Third, send out press releases touting your teams’ bikes, products, riders and results. The privateer life is tough, but in a sport where not even the big teams are very good at getting free publicity, everyone needs to up their press relations game.

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: MOTION PRO TITAN THROTTLE TUBE

Motion Pro tested many different materials by hitting them with hammers and dropping weights on them before a deciding on the exact recipe for the Titan’s plastic. The secret formula had the right combination of strength and flexibility, plus low-friction properties for easy twisting.

VERDICT: Motion Pro didn’t want to settle for a better-than-stock throttle tube, they wanted to build the most crash resistant throttle tube on the market. How can a piece of plastic be more durable than a CNC’ed piece of aluminum? If aluminum is bent or dented in a crash it will deform and not return to it’s original shape. The Titan Tube is more rigid than OEM plastic throttle tubes, but more flexible than aluminum. That flexibility may make a material seem weak, but it adds resilience. The result is an amazingly durable throttle tube. $24.99?www.motionpro.com or (650) 594-9600.

CALIFORNIA’S JOHNSON VALLEY RIDING AREA MAY GET A REPRIEVE

Riders who use the popular Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Riding Area in California may not lose most of the area to a Marine base expansion after all. The military is barred from spending money on expanding the Twentynine Palms military base into Johnson Valley until it completes a report on how the expansion would affect off-highway riding, under a military spending authorization bill approved by U.S. House and Senate conferees on Dec. 18. In July, the Department of the Navy released a final environmental impact statement for the expansion of the Marine base. The preferred alternative would allow public use of only 40,000 acres of the 190,000-acre Johnson Valley OHV area, and for only 10 months a year.

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: SLIP ANGLE SA-1 LAP TIMER

The Slip Angle SA-1 Lap Timer is a receiver that measures time on a digital display each time you pass a transmitter that you place on the side of the track..

VERDICT: The SA-1 Lap Timer isn’t design specifically for motocross so we had to McGuyver it into position with duct tape to the crossbar padThe Slip Angle SA-1 Lap Timer is accurate to a 0.0035 of a second. The display shows the previous lap time for around 5 seconds after passing the receiver, then switches to the progress of the current lap time. After you’re finished, the timer will pinpoint the fastest, slowest and average lap times as well as the total moto length with the push of a button. It records either 64 laps or 99 minutes and 59 seconds of riding. $54.95?www.slipangleracing.com or (250) 474-7473.

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: DR.D YZ450F ENGINE RELOCATION KIT

Every MXA test complained about the YZ450F’s tendency to get loose on the entrance to turns. The search for solutions led MXA to longer shock linkages to lower the rear end (which allowed us to lower the front end) and eccentric motor mount inserts that allowed the engine to be moved forward (to put more weight on the front wheel). The only sources for these kits are LightSpeed or DR.D. The YZ450F’s front end problem is a byproduct of the new frame, which steepened the head angle and relocated the weight farther rearward. By moving the engine forward 2.5mm, a racer could get more bite on the front tire at turn-in.

VERDICT: Since of all of MXA’s complaints revolve around the way the YZ450F front end felt at turn-in, we can gladly report that moving the engine forward 2.5mm is a big improvement. $149.95?www.dubachracing.com or (800) 382-2241.
