CURRENT MOTOCROSS NEWS…OR WHAT PASSES FOR IT

Chad Reed: The county commissioners of Florida’s Pasco County agreed on Tuesday to sue Chad Reed over his private kart track and motocross track. This has been going on for years now.

Giuseppe Luongo: After a major black eye over the lack of riders at the Bulgaria, Qatar and Thailand rounds of the 450 World Championships, Youthstream is singing a different tune this week. They will be changing the format for the European 125 two-stroke and 250 four-stroke EMX regional series. Instead of sending half of the riders home after timed qualifying (as they have been doing), Youthstream has suddenly decided that it likes riders and wants to help them. These two series will switch to two Saturday heat races, a Saturday last chance and a final Sunday moto. This way every rider who signs up will get to race something.

Xavier Boog: As if MXGP didn’t have enough trouble finding riders to fill a portion of their starting grid, news out of Europe says that ICE1 Racing’s Xavier Boog has ruptured his tibiofibular and will miss at least two 450 GPs.

Mike Alessi: No more Supercross for Mike Alessi in 2013. He will pull out of the final two rounds to focus on the outdoor Nationals. Mike is currently 13th in the 450 Supercross series.

Cole Seely: Cole Seely has signed an extension to his current Troy Lee Design contract through the 2014 season. Cole will race the 250 Supercross class and 450 Nationals in 2014.

Jessy Nelson: Jessy Nelson will miss Salt Lake City and Las Vegas to heal up from an elbow injury, but he will be ready by Hangtown on May 25.

Matt Goerke: Matt Goerke’s dislocated wrist has not only forced him to miss the last fourth of the Supercross season, but he will miss the first third of the outdoor Nationals. Goerke is not expected to be back in action until round five at Budds Creek.

Brett Metcalfe: After racing the AMA series for 11 years, Brett was unable to find a ride in the USA, so he signed to race the Canadian Nationals for the Leading Edge Kawasaki team. He says that he would like to race Hangtown as a warm-up.

Entry fees: The entry fee to race an AMA National is now $220 per race (plus a handling fee). The Women’s National entry fee is $125 per race. An AMA Pro Racing license is $300, but AMA Pro Racing does not charge a handling fee. The women’s class does not need an AMA Pro Racing license, just an AMA membership.

Twitter gate: AMA Pro Racing requires all AMA Pro Motocross racers to give the sanctioning body their Twitter account name. Wonder why?

Eli Tomac: According to those who specialize in spreading rumors, Eli Tomac is definitely signing with Honda, Kawasaki, RCH Suzuki or KTM. We are glad that is settled.

ASK THE MXPERTS: WHY ISN’T JIMMY DECOSTIS WINNING IN EUROPE?

Jimmy D.

Dear MXA,
You Yanks are always going on about how great you are. So tell me, why isn’t Jimmy Decotis doing anything with his fill-in ride at CLS Kawasaki in the 250 GPs?

MXA never thought that Jimmy would be a threat to win in Europe. Why not? That is simple. Jimmy Decostis has never finished in the top 15 in an AMA National. His best ever outdoor National finish was a 16th at Southwick in 2011. Even if you go to moto scores, Jimmy only made the top ten once in 36 tries (a ninth at the 2011 Southwick National in moto two). Over three seasons (2009-2011), Jimmy’s average AMA National finish in the 250 class is 23rd place. Jimmy didn’t race any AMA Nationals in 2012 due to injuries. But, Jimmy’s first two races in Europe haven’t been a fair test as he has been involved in crashes and had issues that stopped him from racing up to his potential. We are pulling for the nice kid from New England to revitalized his career in Europe?but a top ten would be better than he ever did in America.

ASK THE MXPERTS: CAN I REMOVE MY 250SXF SPARK ARRESTOR?

It may look like a spark arrestor, but it doesn’t quack like a duck.

We removed the screen with a Dremel…well, we had Mitch Payton remove it for us.

Dear MXA,
Can I remove the spark arrestor screen from my 2013 KTM 250SXF. I don’t ride it on trails, only on racetracks? What is the best way to remove it?

Although there is a screen in the end cap of the 2013 KTM 250SXF, it is not a spark arrestor. It is a sound deadening device. We removed ours with a Dremel.

ON THE LEGAL FRONT: ALPINESTARS & RG3 SEEK RELIEF

ALPINESTARS: Motorcycle apparel maker Alpinestars SpA urged the U.S. Court of International Trade on Thursday to reclassify its Tech 8 motocross boot as protective sportswear and not footwear, a distinction that subjects the item to a substantially higher duty rate. Alpinestars said the government’s contention that Tech 8 boots can’t be classified as sports apparel is “self-serving” and is based on a superficial analysis of the item ? that it’s shaped like a boot and goes over a rider’s foot

RG3: Motocross suspension company RG3, which went into business in 1998, filed an extension with the U.S. Patent office to stop football player Robert Griffin III from trademarking his nicknamed, RG3 or RGIII. The suspension company’s lawyer says that RG3 is not trying to profit off Griffin’s fame and wishes him the best on and off the field, but that they want to prevent marketplace confusion and note that Robert Griffin III was only 8 years old when RG3 suspension was formed.

THIS ISN’T MOTOCROSS, BUT IT IS COOL

This is Tom White, former AMA Grand National dirt tracker, 1990 Over-40 World Vet Motocross Champion and museum owner, hustling his KTM 1190 RC8 through turn four at California Speedway last weekend. What’s so cool about it? Tom was taking a week off from racing motocross at Glen Helen to return to road racing. When was the last time time Tom was on a road race course? 40 years ago at the 1973 Laguna Seca National. What will you be doing 40 years from now?
