CHAD REED TO HAVE KNEE SURGERY…  HE WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE WEEK OFF AND SKIP HOUSTON

Chad wants his knee to be ready for the AMA Nationals.

Chad Reed will undergo a second operation on the knee he injured during the 2012 season on Tuesday. The surgery was required to get the knee 100% right so he can move forward into the outdoor season without compromise.

Reed raced Toronto because his knee is bothersome, but not seriously injured. Chad Reed got fourth and said, “Well, I got a sniff of the podium tonight. I am excited to be getting the surgery so I can get back to being 100% healthy. My knee surgery that I had last year unfortunately has not healed 100%. I got to a level and it never progressed past that. I actually thought I could get through Supercross and motocross and have it fixed in the off season. Now I am favoring it and I am starting to tweak my back. I think it is best that I get it fixed as soon as possible and then get back on the bike ASAP as well.”

DEAN WILSON ON THE NO-FLY LIST… BUT NOT WITH THE TSA

Dean chillaxing’ by the pool.

Although Dean Wilson tweeted last week that he had broken his shoulder, back, collarbone, ribs (not to mention puncturing his lung), thankfully his injuries aren’t as bad as first thought. He did break a rib and puncture his lung, but it will take more MRI’s to see if his collarbone injury is new or old and determine if his back injury is just a crack or something more serious. However, because Dean punctured his lung, he cannot fly. Thus, he had to spend four days in an Indy hospital and his dad had to drive him home to Florida. Dean cannot fly until the hole in his lung is completey healed. So, he sent out a photo of him relaxing by the pool.

“RIDE FOR ROOKIE” ON MARCH 30 AT PALA

Hi all,
In case you have not heard, my brother Darrin (aka “Rookie” to most of you) was terribly injured in a bicycle accident February 25. While he is slowly recovering and we hope that one day he may be able to regain most or all of the use of his hands and legs, his hospital stay and future long term care will undoubtedly be difficult to handle himself. To show support and with the help of many industry people, most notably those at KTM, there will be a ride day to help raise money and show support for him on Saturday March 30 at Pala Raceway, from 9-4pm. Please help spread the word and I hope to see you all there. Best Regards,
            Derek Sorenson

BEN TOWNLEY INJURED AGAIN…BUT IT’S NO BIG DEAL

Ben Townley underwent surgery in Melbourne, Australia, on Tuesday to plate a broken collarbone. In Townley’s world of injuries and surgeries this is little more than a stubbed toe. He will be ready for the opening round of the Australian National series on April 14. Townley said, “I crashed while testing and broke my collarbone, so in order to ensure it is fully healed for the start of the MX Nationals it has been plated.”

WHAT THE MXA WRECKING CREW IS UP TO THIS WEEK

Are you old enough to remember Full Bore boots? Well, Full Bore is back with a new tire design. We have just started to ride with it.

Last Saturday we added a 2013 TM 144MX to your test schedule. Not only will we be testing it for the magazine, but it will join our four-man 125 Pro team for the April 7th MTA World Two-Stroke Championship. We will have test riders on a Yamaha YZ125, KTM 125SX, Husky CR144 and TM 144MX. And that’s just in the 125 Pro class.

In our spare time we have been testing five different Yamaha YZ250 pipes, including the Scalvini cone pipe shown here. We have dyno’ed them, sound tested them, race tested them and round-robin tested them. All that left is to come up with a verdict

Meanwhile, testing is still going forward on our 2013 Husqvarna CR125 test. We are adding a 144cc cylinder, having Pro Circuit port it and Bones Bacon revalve the suspension for the MTA Two-Stroke race. Until then, it’s a stock 125.

USED IT, ABUSED IT TESTED IT: K&N YZ450F YA-4510 AIR FILTER

The YZ450F’S pancake foam filter is not one of the best features of the 2010 through 2013 Yamaha. K&N’s rubber-framed, washable fabric air filter uses fine strands of oil-soaked cotton sandwiched between two layers of wire screen to trap dirt.

VERDICT: MXA prefers to run K&N YA-4510 air filters in our YZ450’s for one simple reason?the K&N fabric filter does not need to be cleaned as often as the typical foam filter. And given the hoops that you have to jump through to get to the YZ450F airbox?not having to change the filter every week is a blessing. Performance wise we noticed two things: (1) It was louder than the stock filter because it sucks more air through its increased surface area. (2) There was a slight increase in horsepower at 8,000 rpm. $65.00?www.knfilters.com or (800) 858-3333.

Ray Archer

“In the first few races it looks very exciting and very interesting, but personally in the long-term future I think it’s not the best way to go. For young riders coming up in the MX2 class it is really tough to go against MX1 guys. For the teams everyone is looking for some attention and if you are just racing around in 10th or 15th or 20th place it’s not interesting enough. For me personally, I think its not the best way to go.” MotoX Addicts interview
