BRETT METCALFE WINS IN CANADA, WHILE POLITELLI’S 250  WIN STREAK IS SNAPPED

Round 4 of the Monster Energy Motocross Nationals at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton on Sunday proved to be a barnburner, especially in the MX1 class, which was won by Leading Edge Kawasaki’s Brett Metcalfe on the strength of 2-1 motos. Metcalfe’s teammate, Teddy Maier, recorded second overall on the strength of 1-2 motos, putting the icing on the cake for Team Green.
 
In the MX2 division, Leading Edge stayed on top of the game in the first moto with Austin Politelli. But after a mediocre start and a crash in the second moto the Californian’s winning streak ground to a halt. He settled for fourth overall on the day, thanks to his first moto win and sixth place in the second. Red Bull/Fox/Royal Distributing/KTM’s Kaven Benoit, who nailed both moto holeshots, stepped up to the plate at Castrol Raceway to record his first overall of the season with a 2-1.

Politelli has a 33 points margin over Benoit in the 250 class, while Metcalfe leads Bobby Kiniry by 44 points.

CASELLI WINS ARGENTINIAN DESAFIO RUTA RALLY

American Kurt Caselli won the final stage of the Desafio Ruta 40 Rally in Argentina and clinched the overall victory. His KTM teammates Chaleco Lopez of Chile and Marc Coma of Spain finished second and third to give KTM a clean sweep of the podium. After more than 18 hours of racing the winning margin was 43 seconds. Caselli is a relatively new recruit to the KTM Factory Rally Team, but is a very experienced offroad, Baja competitor and motocrosser. 

                        
2013 AUSTRALIAN SUPERCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP STEPS UP…WAY UP

The Australian Supercross Championship will receive 12 hours TV coverage on Speed TV. It will will be shown in Australia, New Zealand, Britain, Europe and Southeast Asia. Australian Supercross director Yarrive Konsky said, “Teams, riders and sponsors will be excited to know that the championship will have a new look, and the 450 and 250 races will be shown in their entirety, in separate one-hour programs.”

In other news, Australian Supercross privateers will see $25,000 in purse money set aside for them during the six-race series. Plus, Pirelli will kick in $9600 in privateer contingency and the Australian Supercross promoters will provide free freight to help the riders and team get to the long-distance Darwin event.

MXA’S DARYL ECKLUND RIDES THE CV4 / CYCRA / FTI HONDA CRF450 IN NORTH CAROLINA

The 10-Hour course was laid out for 15-minute lap times. It combined the USGP track, REM track, Lucas Oil Offroad Truck track and the ridges. Of course it included Mt. Saint Helen (above) and the Talledega first turn.


The start is very low key. Each team, typically there are four-men riding each bike, selects one rider to start the race and then they switch off at regular intervals. Rith 10 hours of riding ahead, getting the holeshot isn’t all that important?except in the Pro class, where Justin Jones came around on lap one with a two-minute lead. The classes leave in waves approximately 30 second apart.


Favorite Robby Bell crashed on the first lap and put his team in a big hole when he had to pit to change the handlebars. Each team has a spare bike in the impound area, but there is strategy involved in when to use it. Bell’s team elected to change the bars.


The pack only stays together on the first lap, after that the teams choose their own pace. This unidentified rider is dressed for the long-haul. He has a hydration pack for water and camouflage gear to help sneak up on the guys he is chasing.


This is something you don’t see at a motocross race. The riders had to ride over this bridge to cross the track. It’s not as easy as it looks and occasionally an over aggressive rider will jump so high that he hits his head on top of the bridge.


TM fielded a team for the 10-Hour on a TM 250MX two-stroke. This is importer Pete Vetrano in the saddle.


The TM had a handmade aluminum gas to double the fuel capacity. Note the Scalvini cone pipe.

THIS WEEK WITH THE MXA WRECKING CREW


Starting the MXA test process on the 2014 KX250. It begins with the help of the Kawasaki mechanics (like Mike Chavez shown here), but goes through everything from photos session to races to tear-downs.

Every week is busy for the MXA gang, but they are always interesting. Here was this week’s schedule.

On Monday, John Basher and Daryl Ecklund spent the day in the office getting the next magazine ready, while Jody and Dennis Stapleton worked on bikes. Dennis’ arm is still in a sling from the surgery he had for his surfing accident, but even with one arm he easily pulled the suspension off of our KX450F to ship it out.

On Tuesday, John, Daryl and Jody convened at the Valencia office (just across from Magic Mountain), where they made prank phone class and argued about where to go for lunch.


MXA’s 2014 KTM 350SXF (75) and 250SXF (35) are busy being tested by as many MXA guys as possible. This is Daryl Ecklund and Ryan Abbatoye.

On Wednesday, John Basher and Daryl went to the Competitive Edge track for day one of the 2014 Kawasaki intro. Day one was the KX250F. Dennis Stapleton had some of his Kuwaiti racers in town and took them to Pala for some American riding. Jody had a meeting at Troy Lee Designs.

On Thursday, John and Daryl were back at Competitive Edge, at the top of the Cajon Pass, for the 2014 KX450 intro. Jody was the only one in MXA’s palatial offices.

Friday was a chance to regroup, wash all the dirty bikes, collect products and get ready for some serious testing (with the 2014 KTM 250SXF and 350SXF). We are under some time constraints because next week we have a couple days with the Yamaha gang at the 2014 YZ450F intro, plus a trip to Germany and an issue to wrap up.

On Saturday the MXA test crew was at the 10-Hours of Glen Helen (you can see the photos above).

                       
THE NEWS AS WE KNOW IT…

Healthy: Adam Cianciarulo will make his pro debut at Budds Creek on Saturday. He missed the planned opener at Hangtown with food poisoning and sat out the next four races to make sure he was ready.


Coming back: Wil Hahn, who was injured at the final Supercross of the year, will make his return to racing at Budds Creek.


Leaving again:
Nico Izzi will not be racing at Budds Creek. Nico is undergoing knee surgery and will miss the rest of the 2013 season.


Gone from the scene: Also missing this weekend will be Volcom, who shut down their motocross division this week to focus on their core business?which most likely means focusing on not losing money. According to the Orange County Business Journal, French-owned Volcom “declined to comment through a spokeswoman on how many workers and sponsored athletes it had dedicated to its moto business.”


Coming home: Jimmy Decostis has left the 250 GP series and returned home. Jimmy Decostis wasn’t ready for that kind of challenge. He has never finished in the top 15 in an AMA National in his life. His best ever AMA outdoor National finish was a 16th at Southwick in 2011. Hopefuly, he can take Europe as a learning experience and try to make a dent in the remaining AMA Nationals.


Sponsorship: Rocky Mountain ATV/MC has signed a two-year deal to serve as the title sponsor and Fly Racing will be the presenting sponsor for the Ponca City MX Championships. It is important to note that this is not the NMA Ponca City Nationals, but the replacement race that was formed when the NMA moved their race to another track.


Hall of Fame nominees: There are many worthy people in motorcycling that deserved to be nominated for entrance into the AMA Hall of Fame, but like most people we root for people we have heard of ? well, in that case, we are rooting for 15-time Champion Ricky Carmichael, Baja racer Danny Hamel and desert race Jack Johnson. The rest of the nominees include Mark Buckner, Richard Gross, Charles Gustafson Sr., Tommy Hays, Joseph Hemmis Sr., Bob Leppan, Norm McDonald, Randy Renfrow, Joe Smith, Gloria Tramontin Struck, Gene Wirwahn and Mike & Dianne Traynor. Only the top vote getters will be inducted.


Swapping: The Eleven10 Mods race team appears to have died a natural death. Eleven10 rider Alex Martin and Brady Kiesel will move over to the Rock River Yamaha team. Meanwhile Jake Canada is looking for a ride after parting ways with Moto Concepts.

                       
QUOTE OF THE WEEK: POLITICAL DIVISION


“Corn with a lot of butter is really good to eat, but what is good to eat is not good to put in anybody’s gas tank.” said Wisconsin Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner in response to the EPA’s refusal to table their E15 fuel mandate. E15 is a gasoline formulation that contains up to 15 percent ethanol by volume. No manufacturer has approved E15 for use in its motorcycles.

                       
USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: 7602 RACING ADJUSTABLE KTM BRAKE TIP


7602 Racing’s 7075 aluminum KTM brake tip is a bolt-on extension for the KTM brake pedal. It is not only more aggressive, but it is adjustable fore and aft across a 1/2-inch range.

VERDICT: You wouldn’t think that a half-inch would make any difference. But, every MXA test rider raved about the 7602 tip. They didn’t rave about the anodized orange color (also available in black), sharp teeth or brake snake hole. Nope, they loved the fact that the longer brake pedal tip was more accessible and more tactile. MEMORIES! ANCIENT ARTIFACTS OF THE WAY WE WERE


The 1975 DG Performance Specialties race team was a powerhouse. The DG riders (from left to right) were Davey Williams, Broc Glover, Gary Denton, Kevin Harlow, Dave Eropkin and Bob Hannah. Glover and Hannah would go on to AMA National Championship success; Gary Denton was the top privateer in the 125 Nationals before becoming the king of Quad racing; Davey Williams only raced four AMA Nationals in his career, but finish in the top ten in two of them. His brother was famous mechanic Rocky Williams (lower right), who wrenched for Gaylon Mosier; Dave Eropkin is still racing at Glen Helen every weekend; Kevin Harlow is still the son of the DG owner Gary Harlow.

Jody, ever tactful, said, “I didn’t want to ride my 1972 bike in 1973, why would I want to ride it in 2013?”

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: SKF FORK SEALS/DUST WIPERS


With one of every 2013 motocross bike made in our test fleet, the MXA test crew gets tired of blown forks seals. Which is why we replace the stock seals with SKF seals (they come stock on KTM’s and we rarely blow a KTM fork seal). SKF seal kits consist of a new oil seal and a new dust wiper. SKF’s self-lubricating rubber compound not only enables them to keep the oil in, but to reduce static friction (stiction) by a significant amount.

VERDICT: Nothing is more frustrating than looking down at your fork leg and seeing oil oozing towards your front brake rotor. A modern upside-down fork requires complete disassembly to replace a fork seal. In MXA’s opinion, modern fork seals are lightyears better than seals from a few years ago and SKF is better than any other modern seal. It is highly likely that a 2013-era fork seal would never leak or wear out if dirt wasn’t introduced into the equation.
