Round seven of the World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) was held at Glen Helen and Monster Energy / Kawasaki’s Taylor Robert claimed his third win of the season followed by Gary Sutherlin and Justin Jones rounding out the pro podium.

Taylor Robert’s wasted no time proving why he has the 2012 number one plate after taking over the lead from Justin Jones a few turns into lap one. 2013 WORCS points leader Robby Bell moved in to challenge Robert for the lead, but unfortunately, the epic battle came to an end as quickly as it started when Bell hit a rock in the dust on lap three and went over the bars. Taylor Robert extended his lead to over a minute on Sutherlin, he put it in cruise control to conserve energy, and Robert held the lead to the checkered flag for his third win of the season. Gary Sutherlin secured his third podium finish of the season with a solid second place finish, while RPM KTM’s Justin Jones claimed his third straight podium finish with a third place finish, even after going down hard in the sand wash. Fortunately, he wasn’t injured went to secure a podium finish.

The race was won by 18-year-old C.J. Greaves, son of truck racer Johnny Greaves. Ricky Carmichael had lots of truck racing experience from the NASCAR Camping World Truck seasons in 2009 through 2011. NEW ZEALAND NAMES ITS MOTOCROSS DES NATIONS TEAM

Cody Cooper.

Cody Cooper, Rhys Carter and Kayne Lamont will comprise the three-rider New Zealand squad  at the Motocross of Nations on September 30. Josh Coppins will be the team manager. Cody Cooper and Kayne Lamont have both been on Team New Zealand before, but Carter will be a first timer. Josh Coppins said, ”It will be a first for Rhys to ride this event and it is a huge undertaking, but we will be calling on the experienced Cooper to step up and make another huge effort as our lead rider. These three riders are currently racing in Australia and they are extremely fit.”

So far only four nations have finalized their teams of the 2013 MXDN. The other three are Germany (Max, Nagl, Ken Roczen and Dennis Ulrich), France (Gautier Paulin, Jordi Tixier and Christophe Charlier) and Ireland (Graeme Irwin, Martin Barr and Stuart Edmonds). Historically the American team has been announced at Unadilla, which is this weekend. But that announcement has been delayed (see above).

JEAN-MICHEL BAYLE RIDES AGAIN

JMB.

The Honda Grand Prix team invited two-time World Champion Jean-Michel Bayle out to ride the 2014 CRF250. In 1988 Bayle won the 125cc World Championship, followed by the 250cc class the following year. Then JMB came to the USA and won the 1991 AMA 250, 500 and Supercross Championship. After that Bayle lost interest in motocross and switched to road racing. He raced both the 250cc and 500cc MotoGP series.

Jean-Michel Bayle said about riding with the Honda GP team, “It’s great to come back to the races and see what is going on, especially while following the team from the inside. It’s brought back for me a lot of memories of my racing days, as I was racing Honda all of my career in motocross, and it’s nice to see the spirit is still there. The bikes are nice, and fun to ride, so for me it’s been quite interesting. It’s been a long time since I’ve attended motocross events, as I’ve spent more of my time at the road races. I ride at home a little bit, but not so much motocross. I ride on the trails, having fun, so it was nice to ride at a GP track.”

JOSH HILL SIGNS TO RACE OZ SUPERCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP

Josh.

Josh Hill has signed to race the upcoming Australian Supercross series. He is the second American to announce plans to race down under (Gavin Faith also plans to return to Australian to defend his 2012 250 title). Neither Faith nor Hill are racing the AMA Nationals this year, although Hill did finish second at the X Games last week (really just a 30-second per lap Arenacross). The six-round Australian Supercross Championship will start with a double-header at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway on September 12-14. It will be held in conjunction with a round of the Australian Superbike Championship.

HUSQVARNA TO SPONSOR HALL OF FAME LEGEND PRESENTATIONS FOR TORSTEN HALLMAN AND MARK BLACKWELL

Torsten Hallman.

Husqvarna has a long and storied history in American motocross and with the AMA Hall of Fame honoring two former Husqvarna heroes, it is only natural that Husqvarna sponsor that part of the Hall of Fame presentation on October 18 in Las Vegas. This year’s Hall of Fame Legends are Mark Blackwell, a pioneering racer in American motocross, a six-time AMA championship race team manager and a well-respected executive in the motorcycle industry; and Torsten Hallman, a four-time FIM World Motocross champion who was instrumental in introducing the sport of motocross to America and later founded the Thor brand. MEMORIES OF THE WAY WE WERE

It’s easy to think that motocross is at the height of its popularity today, but that is far from the truth. Back in the “good old days” the manufacturers sold 1,000,000 dirt bikes a year and companies like Champion Spark Plugs pursued the American motocross market aggressively. Today the manufacturers sell less that 100,000 dirt bikes a year. Here, birthday boy Jammin’ Jimmy Weinert appears in a Champion ad.
