DODGER STADIUM OPTS OUT OF SUPERCROSS… RACE MOVED TO ANAHEIM STADIUM

Due to planned improvements that the Los Angeles Dodgers intend to make to Dodger Stadium during the offseason, the  AMA Supercrossscheduled to be held at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on January 19, 2013 has been moved to Angel Stadium.

“We are working diligently to make the change from Dodger Stadium to Angel Stadium for the January 19 Monster Energy Supercross race seamless for the teams, sponsors, and most importantly the fans,” said Ken Hudgens, Chief Operating Office, Feld Motor Sports. See the complete Supercross schedule further down on this page.

IF YOU THOUGHT CLASSIC BIKES WERE EXPENSIVE: THE MOST EXOTIC F1 CAR OF ALL-TIME GOES ON THE BLOCK

Jody Scheckter in the P34.

Motocross fans are often shocked to discover that classic motocross bikes can often sell for as much as $250,000 ? like a rare Lito, Monark or Husqvarna four-stroke?but they would blanch if a vintage bike fetched $1,250,000. But that is exactly what the asking price is for a 1976 F1 car.

1959 Sten Lundin raced a Monark 500 to the World Championship. His actual race bike could sell for as much as $250,000 on the vintage market…and any of the other eight Monarks could fetch anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000.

It is not just any F1 car though?it is the unconventional six-wheeled 1976 Tyrrell P34. The Dereck Gardner-designed car had four small 10-inch front wheels instead of two. The unusual race car scored 14 podiums and one GP victory for Tyrrell. It was raced by Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler. Jody Scheckter won the 1976 Swedish GP in the car, but called the P34 a “piece of junk.”

See the P34 in action at Goodwood below.

MXA PRODUCT OF THE WEEK: THE BIG-BORE KIT TO END ALL BIG-BORE KITS

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: VP RACING VPR OXYGENATED/LEADED RACE FUEL

VPR is designed as a stable and consistent fuel that a racer can depend on. Pump gas varies from summer blend to city blend to winter blend  (and contains ethynol). With VPR you are assured that your bike has the same formula every time. This makes it the perfect fuel for racers on the national amateur circuit who might be in Nevada one week and Tennessee the next week.

VERDICT: Thanks to its higher oxygen and octane content, VPR produced more power than pump gas. During testing the MXA wrecking crew ran both dyno and race tests. VPR showed horsepower increases at every rpm. It made anywhere from a quarter of a horse more to a full horse at peak. Test riders reported a noticeable improvement in throttle response and a more stable feel at overrev.  $65.00 (average price for five gallons)?www.vpracingfuels.com or (210) 635-7744.

ASK THE MXPERTS: DOES ANYONE MAKE A BIKE LIKE THE OLD HONDA TRAIL 90 TODAY?

Sachs Madass 125.

Dear MXA,
I used to own a Honda trail 90 when I was a kid. Where can I find a hunting, fishing and man about town bike like the venerable Honda? Does anyone make a bike like it today?

The muffler is mounted under the seat.

Yes, the Sachs Madass 125 retails for $2699, gets 85 mpg and uses a 124cc, electric start, four-stroke engine. You can get U.S. information about the Sachs at www.peirspeed.com

CHAD REED ON THE FAILED DEAN WILSON DEAL

Chad Reed.

Talking about his hoped-for plans for the 2013 season, Chad Reed said, “The goal this year was to have a second rider. We had the budget to do it, we had everything in place. Unfortunately, truth of the matter is that Honda didn’t come to the table with a bike like they were supposed to, so I’m a little disappointed in that.

“For a little bit there we talked to Ryan Villopoto , but I think that was an unrealistic goal. But, I think that Dean Wilson was a very realistic goal. And not only did we lose him once, we lost him twice! So, I was pretty bummed about how all that went down.

Dean Wilson.

“I felt that we were in a good position to have a good, young talent. Not only would he be good for us as a brand and a team, I think he would have been good for the Honda brand. So, it was disappointing to see how it all went down. It could have been good. I mean, it was a business decision. It didn’t have anything at all to do with how close I am to Dean as a friend. I think that he has the skills. If you look at Monster Cup, Barcia and Tomac achieved great results and I think Dean is every bit as good, if not better, than those two guys.”

“Obviously, I’m at the tail-end of my career and it would be nice to have somebody who’s in the position of challenging for race wins and championships to take over for my spot. The goal has always been to have two guys… The positive would be that it justifies TwoTwo Motorsports as a race team that’s willing to race on a week to week basis. I think, right now, we’re looked at as a race team where basically I’m giving myself a job and I’m the sole rider, team owner/rider kind of thing. So I think a lot of people kind of question how long we’re going to be here for and how much commitment I have for doing this beyond my racing years. So, I would like to have a second rider for that.” Read the complete interview at www.monsterenergy.com

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: UFO PLASTIC YZ125/YZ250 RESTYLE KIT

The UFO Plastic YZ125/YZ250 restyle kit is a complete makeover in a box. It turns the outmoded Yamaha two-stroke from frumpy and inelegant to modern and sleek. The $229.95 kit includes radiator shrouds, side panels, front number plate, rear fender and front fender (all designed and drill to fit on the two-stroke’s chassis). The UFO pieces are based on the current YZ250F plastic.

VERDICT: With the exception of the need to transfer the aluminum collars from the stock YZ125/YZ250 plastic to the UFO parts, every piece of the UFO Restyle kit bolted on with ease. Not only did every part line up perfectly, but the quality was superb. We ordered a graphics kit from Decal Works that fits perfectly on the UFP parts and were amazed in the transformation of the overall look of the bike. We must admit that the edgy YZ250F design isn’t our favorite look, but the stock YZ250 plastic is vintage at best. $229.95?www.ufoplasticusa.com or (815) 756-9400.

JEFFEY HERLINGS: IT ISN’T HIS DREAM TO COME TO AMERICA

Jeffrey Herlings.
                                                         Photo: Massimo Zanzani

“I really want to stay in Europe, but I also want to spend another year on the MX2 class, so it is tough. I want to stay in Europe because I feel at home, but I don’t want to go MX1 yet. I have to make that decision when it comes, go MX1 or go to America. I know I will be a good MX1 rider, but if I want to stay MX2. I mean, it might be other people’s dream to go to America, but it isn’t really mine. I like Europe and being with my friends. We have to see what happens. I want to stay in Europe and finish my career like Antonio will.” Read the complete interview at www.motocrossmx1.com

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: RISK RACING SEAL DOCTOR

In their normal life, fork seals don’t wear out. Instead, their integrity is compromised by small pieces of grit that get by the oil wiper and lodge in the lips of the fork seal. The grit either lifts the edge of the seal’s lip or it cuts through it. The result? A leaky fork seal. The Risk Racing Seal Doctor is a cylindrical plastic device that is designed to slip under a fork seal and eject dirt as it is rotated around the fork leg. You don’t have to remove the fork guards, but you do need to pry the dust wiper down to get access to the seal. Word of warning, do not use the Seal Doctor on Kayaba PSF air forks or the air will come out.

VERDICT: Every rider should have a Seal Doctor, or at the very least a strip of 35mm film, in their toolbox. Replacing fork seals is a lot more expensive than the $26 Seal Doctor. $25.95?www.riskracing.com or (704) 658-9332.

2013 WOMEN’S TRIPLE CROWN OF MOTOCROSS…QUICK TRANSLATION, THEY WILL RACE THREE TIMES NEXT YEAR

Ashley got out of Dodge at the right time.

MX Sports Pro Racing has announced that professional women’s motocross racing will again be featured at the 2013 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing. WMX racing will be hosted at three select rounds next summer, with the Hangtown Motocross Classic, the High Point National and Moto-X 338 National selected to compose what will be officially known as the Women’s Pro Motocross Triple Crown.

“The number of 2013 events featuring women’s pro motocross has been reduced from past years due to operational demands associated with both the live events and the television and internet broadcasts for the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship,” said Roy Janson, Director of Competition for MX Sports Pro Racing. “This limits the ability to feature women’s pro motocross as often as we did during the 2012 season. Even though there will be fewer events featuring women’s professional motocross racing, MX Sports is pleased to be able to include the competition at these three great venues.”

ASK THE MXPERTS: WHY AREN’T STEERING STEMS MADE OF STEEL

All modern bikes use aluminum steering stems.

Dear MXA,
When I was changing the steering head bearing on my CRF450 I was shocked to see that the steerer stem was made made from aluminum. Wouldn’t it be safer if steerer stems were steel inside of spindly looking aluminum?

Yes, it would be safer, but stem safety has not been an issue over the last decade. The reason that the manufacturers switched from steel to aluminum is to save weight. And, the “spindly looking” stem on your bike isn’t spindly, it is tapered to be thinner in the middle of its length to feed flex into the steerer tube. Test riders discovered years ago that rigidity for the sake of rigidity is not beneficial to the ride comfort of a motocross bike. Originally, when aluminum stems replaced the traditional steel stems, they were thick, straight tubes, but the engineers discovered that by altering the diameter and wall thickness of the steerer tube that they could improve the feel of the bike in corners and bumps. This is a significant issue on overly stiff aluminum twin-spar frames.

JOSH GRANT’S RECAPS OF HIS LAST RIDE FOR THE JEFF WARD KAWASAKI TEAM BEFORE MOVING TO JGR

APPLE BUYS HARLEY-DAVIDSON… WELL, APPLE BUYS “LIGHTNING” TRADEMARK…WHICH WAS REALLY A BUELL TRADEMARK

The eight-prong Lightning connector.

Apple had to buy the rights for the name “lightning” for its new eight-prong mobile connector from Harley-Davidson. Harley had been granted the Lightning trademark in Europe in 2005 for a line of motorcycles and parts?actually it was for Buell, which Harley-Davidson owned at the time. Under the terms of the agreement, Harley is still free to use the name if they want to. Harley not only trademarked the name for motorcycles, but for a wide range of products including vending machines, pinball machines, Christmas tree ornaments, golf tees, cat toys, television sets and eyeglasses. It was probably the television link that drew Apple’s interest to the trademark.
