SUPERCROSS TO TEST MOTO GP-STYLE GYROSCOPIC CAMERA

A Honda CRF450 wired up with front and rear gyroscopic cameras.

Word on the street is that the Supercross promoters will begin testing a gyroscopic camera at Anaheim III. The camera system, developed in Europe, has been tested on a motocross bike by Spanish GP rider Javier Garcia Vico and will reportedly be tested by the Ricky Carmichael team on February 3.

The rear facing camera is amazingly small. The thing on the back of the rear fender is the antenna to beam the image back to the camera crew.

The camera always stays aligned with the horizon no matter how far the bike is laid over?and was used on the rear seats of MotoGP bikes during their TV coverage in the past.

The front camera mounting system is a little more bulky than the rear camera.

This will be the first time the system will be tested for Supercross, but no deal has been signed with the Fox Sport 1 network as of yet.

WHAT THE MXA WRECKING CREW IS UP TO THIS WEEKEND

This is MXA’s 2014 KTM 450SXF Factory Edition III. We’ve already ridden it at a couple tracks, but want to take it to REM to test the new 4CS forks on something really rough.

With four different project going on at the same place, the MXA gang will be at the Anaheim 2 Supercross, St. Maertens, Wisconsin and Glen Helen REM.

This is MXA‘s 2014 Husqvarna FC450. It’s a very pretty bike, but let’s wait and see what it looks like after it is raced in two or three classes.

We will be sending John Ker and Spencer Rathkamp to A2, Dennis Stapleton is going to the Caribbean for a race, John Basher and Daryl Ecklund will be in Campbellsport, Wisconsin, ice racing and Jody and the rest of the crew will be going to Glen Helen to test bikes. We will all meet again when we get back.

Daryl Ecklund kicks out the rear end on a 2014 Yamaha YZ250F while braving a bone-chilling 18-degree high in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. Ecklund, John Basher, and Yamaha’s Tim Olson will be competing in a three-hour ice race on Sunday.

A man’s got to know his limitations. Daryl Ecklund pushed the envelope and went body surfing through a snow bank. We’re called the MXA wrecking crew for a reason.

Dennis Stapleton sent John Basher and Daryl Ecklund a postcard from St. Maarten, where he’s racing in the Caribbean this weekend. He wrote this message: “Here’s my view from the beach. Enjoy the frostbite in Wisconsin!” What a nice guy…

TEAM
HONDA TO QUIT BAJA AND SWITCH TO THE GNCC

Bye Bye Baja.

Honda has signed a multi-year deal with JCR Honda to compete in the Grand National Cross Country series (GNCC). They will pull out of Baja to make this happen. “For us, it’s really all about new challenges,” said Honda Motorcycle Race Director Ray Conway. “Honda has dominated the SCORE series for decades, and has won the Baja 1000 23 times, including the last 17 consecutive events. Johnny Campbell Racing (JCR) has spearheaded this effort for years, and Johnny Campbell has a long record of victories in Baja, including 11 Baja 1000 wins. Now it’s time for us to look for new challenges, just as Honda has with our recent involvement in the world rally championship, and the GNCC series is one of the most professional and competitive off-road series here in the U.S.”

TRAVIS PASTRANA WILL RETURN TO RALLY RACING FOR SUBARU…WHEN HE HEALS UP

Back in the cage.

Travis Pastrana will return to rally car racing in 2014 (even though he broke his tib/fib at the Nitro Circus event last weekend). Rob Weir, Subaru’s Motorsports Marketing Manager, said, “Subaru is very excited to bring back both of our former rally champions. Between David Higgins and Travis Pastrana, Subaru Rally Team USA has won the Rally America Championship seven times in the last eight years. Having them together this coming season will give us our best chance at defending our title.”

Travis, ready to go.

Travis Pastrana won four straight Rally America titles with Subaru Rally Team USA between 2006 and 2010. He has spent the last few seasons racing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. The first round of the Rally America Championship will be held in Atlanta, Michigan on January 24-25, but Pastrana won’t make his debut until round two on February 21-22  in Salem, Missouri.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: DR.D 2014 YZ450F/YZ250F RADIATOR LOWERING KIT

Dubach Racing Development’s (DR.D) all-new 2014 Yamaha YZ250/450F radiator lowering kit moves the radiators 24mm downwards, helping lower the bike’s center of gravity, which increases turning performance and makes the bike more maneuverable. The kit comes with all the necessary hardware, and can be installed in 15 minutes. Dollar for dollar, this is the single biggest improvements a rider can make to his Yamaha’s handling. DR.D Radiator lowering kits are available for YZ-F, KX-F and CRF models at www.dubachracing.com or (951) 808-1114.

AUSSIES REINVENT THE WHEEL: HALF OF THE NATIONALS TO RUN A DIFFERENT FORMAT THAN THE OTHER HALF

Australian Champ Matt Moss (102) will defend his National and Supercross titles in 2014.

You would think that with the success of Australia riders in Europe and America, that the Australian promoters would be trying to prepare the Oz riders for the rigors of the world and AMA circuits. Instead they are trying to reinvent the wheel. Five of the 2014 Aussie Nationals will consist of three 20-minute motos (just like we used to run in America back in 1972). The other five will be the GP and AMA format of two 30-minute motos. They are also “30-minutes plus one lap” instead of the 30-minutes plus two laps like their higher-profile cousins. It would seem that the home Nationals would try to help their local riders prepare for the next step up the ladder by running the same length races and formats.
