THIS ISN’T MOTOCROSS, BUT THE 2015 SUZUKI TU250X IS INTERESTING

TU250_0444

With styling that recalls yesterday’s classic motorcycles, the 2015 Suzuki TU250X is retro, affordable, street bike. Equipped with a single-cylinder, 250cc, air-cooled engine, but still fuel-injected with a digital ignition. In this day of mega-dollar motorcycles, both street and offroad, the TU250X is designed to get more newcomers into the sport. Plus it has a timeless look, thanks to its round headlight, sweptback chrome exhaust and classic design. Best of all, the suggested retail price of $4399.

Old fashion or retro chic? Ahh, we’ll go with old fashion.

DRUG TESTING  IS THE LAW FOR THE 2014 AMA NATIONALS

logo_wada

MX Sports Pro Racing announced this week that it has entered into an agreement with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) to implement a comprehensive anti-doping program in accordance with the World Anti-Doping code (WADA code) for the 2014 AMA National Motocross Championship.

USADA is responsible for the testing and results management process for athletes in the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement, and is equally dedicated to preserving the integrity of sport through research initiatives and educational programs. Information on the World Anti-Doping Agency Code or the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency is available at www.usada.org.

NATIONAL CHAMPS IN THIS YEAR’S NATIONALS

champdungey

Ryan Dungey.

One thing that motocross fans get to look forward to in this year’s AMA 450 Nationals is a surplus of AMA National Championships. The 450 Nationals might see four former 450 Champions; James Stewart (2008), Chad Reed (2009), Ryan Dungey (2010/12) and Ryan Villopoto (2011/13). Plus, the addition of former 250 National Champions Ivan Tedesco (2005), Trey Canard (2010) and Eli Tomac (2013). That puts 7 former Champions on the track at the same time. For comparison, Blake Baggett (2012) and Dean Wilson (2011) will be the only former National Champions contesting the 250 AMA Nationals.

Side note: Eli Tomac reportedly broke his collarbone practicing this week and will have to miss the Las Vegas Supercross. Being ready for Glen Helen is a possibility.

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: X BRAND GOX GOGGLE

XBRANDGOXGOGGLES11

The X Brand GOX is a well-crafted, no-nonsense, basic motocross goggle without frills. It lacks fancy air scoops, quick-release lens systems, nose guards or outrigger brackets. In their place, it offers a low price point.

VERDICT: The best compliment the MXA wrecking crew can pay to the GOX goggle is that we didn’t notice it while riding. It did everything well and was totally unobtrusive. We admit there there are goggles with better straps, peripheral vision, lens mounting systems and more bells and whistles, but the X Brand GOX is above average in everyone of those categories.

DIGITS: $34.00 to $47.00–www.eksbrand.com or (818) 592-6434.

GRAND PRIX NEWS, BRUISES & SAND MASTERS

Cairoliyyyy778

Tony Cairoli.

This weekend’s GP is round six of the 18-race world Championship series. Since it will be held in the sand of Valkenswaard it is a foregone conclusion that Jeffrey Herlings will win the 250 class and Antonio Cairoli the 450 class.

Tommy Searle will return to action in the 450 class this weekend in Valkenswaard. Searle crashed heavily in Thailand when his bike bogged on the non-regulation fuel that they had to run because of civil unrest in Bangkok.

helrinsgglenn876

Jeffrey Herlings (84) won’t have Glenn Coldenhoff (259) to kick around at Valkenswaard.

Glenn Coldenhoff, who was running third in the 250 World Championships, also crashed while practicing and tore the ligament in his knee, and had surgery on it.

Ken DeDycker has yet to make his return to action after a preseason injury sideline the KTM factory rider.

Alessandro Lupino damaged his knee and will have surgery on the May 14. His recovery should take several months.

Max Nagl, who broke his wrist while practicing at a local track, is out of action. The same crash took out Husqvarna’s Todd Waters (with a broken leg, fractured hip and a broken collarbone).

MOTO-QUIZ: CAN YOU NAME THIS FACTORY HONDA RIDER?

GAYLONMOSIER

He had a cool nickname and was on the same Honda team as Gary Jones, Rich Eierstedt and Chuck Bower, but is best remembered for a racing a different brand. The answer is at the bottom of the page.
