USNG MOTOS INSTEAD OF POINTS AS A MEASURING SCALE AFTER THUNDER VALLEY

jasonandersongh14 Anderson lost 25 points when his Rockstar KTM blew up in the second moto at Glen Helen. He is 60 points behind after three races—which means that he could have just stayed home for one of them.

Motocross pays 25 points per moto (50 points per day). So, one way to gauge a rider’s progress through a series is not to by how many points he is behind the leader, but how many motos. For example, in the 250 Nationals everyone outside of the top five is two motos back (even second place is one moto behind) and everyone outside of the top 15 is three motos back (and this is in a series that is only six motos old). Jeremy Martin has 120 points—Cooper Webb is 26 points behind Martin, Christophe Pourcel is 47 points back, Blake Bagget is 49 points adrifft and Justin Bogle is exactly two motos back at 50 points behind. Jessy Nelson, Marvin Musquin and Jason Anderson are more than two full motos back, while Justin Hill and Matt Bisclegia are three motos behind (after six motos).

weimergh14Jake Weimer (12) is two motos plus 17 points behind Ken Roczen. Ivan Tedesco (9) is over 100 points back—which means that after three races, he is two races behind the leader.

In the 450 class things are a little tighter. There are two riders still racing on the same moto. Roczen leads with 141 points, while Ryan Dungey is 12 points back. James Stewart is 30 points back—that is one moto plus 5 points. Trey Canard is one moto plus 6 point behind. The tenth place rider (Chad Reed) is three motos plus 5 points behind Ken Roczen.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK: HEAL UP SOON

MONTYDsandiegoGiven that Mike Monaghan (793) broke his wrist in a crash at Glen Helen last weekend in the Over-50 Expert class, out of sympathy we dug up this 33-year-old photo of him on the starting line at the 1981 San Diego Supercross. In a historical note, Mike is lined up next to four-time National Champion Gary Jones (844). Gary is on an Ammex and is the only AMA Champion to ever race a bike of his own design.

ARE YOU READY FOR THE HARLEYVARNA?

HARLEYVARNA1There is no truth to the rumor that Harley-Davidson wants to buy Husqvarna from KTM, but that didn’t stop a loyal Husky fan from commissioning this one-off Harley ode to Steve McQueen’s 1971 400 Cross.

FINALLY! THE 2015 YAMAHA TWO-STROKES GET A MAKEOVER

15_YZ125_0Blue_2The biggest technical change on both the YZ125 and YZ250 is the enlarged and redesigned airbox.

After almost a decade of waiting, in which YZ125/250 owners took matters into their own hands, Yamaha has updated the look of their two-strokes for 2015.

GIUSEPPE LUONGO ON THE 23-YEAR-OLD RULE

luuuey2Giuseppe Luongo is steering the ship that holds the careers of a generation of GP riders on its decks—that ship resembles the Titanic.

Serving as the Captain of the Titanic requires the mindset that your course is correct—despite the icebergs. Giuseppe Luongo is piloting the SS Youthstream towards a perilous path with his refusal to drop the rule that requires a rider to move out of the 250 World Championships once he turns 23 years old. Given that there aren’t enough spots on teams to fill the gates in the 450 class, there is no place for 23-year-old 250 riders to move to. Luongo, however, insists that the system “works perfectly.” There are barely 20 riders on the 450 line at any given Grand Prix, while there are over 80 riders at an AMA National. Luongo needs to follow a model that works, not his own faulty beliefs. With seven 250 GP riders about to be kicked out of the 250 class in 2015—where will they go? And, if they don’t get a 450 ride, their careers as GP riders will be over. Full speed ahead Captain G.

Luongo said, in defending the 23-year-old rule, “An important issue which has arisen recently, is concerning MX2’s 23 year age limit Regulation. The large majority of teams and manufacturers are supportive of this rule, however there are a very few who, for their own business, try to change these rules by spreading rumors that these rules will be changed next year; this is completely false. Youthstream’s position is very firm; these rules were created for 2 main reasons, the first is to give access to all talented riders from the European Championship to a good MX2 team, and the 2nd is to reinforce the MXGP class making it really the major class with all the big stars racing together, and now after experience this works perfectly. This is one of the most successful Regulation changes made over the last years…”

BULTACO REBORN AS AN ELECTRIC BIKE

BultacoRapitanThe 2015 Bultaco Rapitan is all-electric.

An engineering firm, LGN Tech, is interesting in revving up the iconic Bultaco brand—with a focus on electric motorcycles. CEO Juan Manuel Vinos said, “Bultaco’s hallmarks from the start, namely its spirit of constant striving, its technological innovation and its passion for motorcycles, are the same hallmarks we have today. They are timeless values.”

BultacoMetrallaMk2KitAmericaIf you only think of Bultaco as a trials and motocross bike manufacturer—think again. The 1966 Bultaco Metralla 250 Kit America was one of the first sports bikes offered in the USA.

LGN finalized a deal with the Bulto family to relaunch the brand as Bultaco Motors. Bultaco plans to have distributors in Spain, the United States, England, Germany and France. Its focus will be on electric propulsion. Don’t hold your breath about seeing one in Peoria any time soon. For more info go to www.bultaco.es

SOUTHWICK GETS A PERMIT TO HOLD RACES AGAIN

map_of_southwick_ma

According to the Westfield News: The Southwick Board of Selectmen agreed to give the American Legion a permit to begin holding motocross races at MX338. “We agreed on a payment of $2000,” said chairman Russell Fox. “They also have an agreement with a private property owner to use his land. I believe they are paying him $5000, so we wanted to be fair and make this affordable for the Legion.” The American Legion Post 338 will hold the permit, and they will allow another group – including Mike Grondahl and Gary Yelin – to run motocross events. “Who they choose to run it is their business,” said Fox of the American Legion. In the past, the town has charged $1000 for a three-year permit and the board agreed last night to a one-year, $350 permit fee to get the events up and running. Fox said he believes the agreement is fair. And the citizens wanted it to happen as a public forum in late March in the Town Hall auditorium was filled with residents overwhelmingly supporting the continuation of the track.
