EVER WONDER WHAT HAPPENED TO MONTESA? LET HONDA TELL YOU

Honda will bring in a limited number of $9000 Montesa Cota 4RT Repsol Replicas.

In the mid-eighties Honda bought the troubled Montesa brand to use as an easy-entry into the Spanish motorcycle market. Since then Montesa has been a niche motorcycle that was not imported to the USA. For 2014 Honda will bring the Montesa Honda Cota 4RT Repsol Edition trials bike to American trials riders.

The Cota engine.

It will only be offered in limited numbers, but the 259cc, fuel-injected, four-stroke claims to feel more like at two-stroke (thanks to a special decompression system that lessens engine braking). The price will be $8999 and it will be available for order in April 2014. For info on how to order go to www.trials.honda.com

The races will not be live, because that would mean showing them nine hours ahead of American time, but they will be shown on a same-day basis, starting with the opening round in Qatar on March 1. The MXDN will also be shown on September 28.

COULD THIS BE A SUPERBIKE ENGINE? NISSAN ZEOD RC THREE CYLINDER ENGINE

ZEOD RC three-cylinder.

Nissan helped develop the innovative DeltaWing Indy car concept and when it was rejected by Indycar as a design, it moved to sports car racing. Now Nissan will take its own version of the DeltaWing to the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans?called the Nissan ZEOD RC.

Nissan’s version of the Deltawing.

It will be a hybrid race car (internal combustion and electric). The batteries for the electric motor will be charged by a 1.5 liter, 88-pound, three-cylinder, turbocharged engine that is on 20 inches tall and 8-inches wide. But, hold on to your hat, it makes 400 horsepower. What’s so interesting about this car engine?imagine it, or something similar in a MotoGP bike. Small, light and powerful.

HERO RNT TWO-WHEEL-DRIVE/ DIESEL/ELECTRIC SCOOTER

Hero RNT 150.

Hero MotoCorp, Honda’s former business partner in India, has produced a prototype scooter of amazingly convoluted proportions. It has a 150cc turbocharged direct-injection diesel engine. It is two-wheel drive (and it only has two wheels). It has an electric motor in the front hub. And if that isn’t enough, the diesel engine provides 1500 W of continuous electric power to the electric motor as a generator. As practical transportation for the Indian market, the scooter could see production with just the diesel engine only.

OSSA AND GAS GAS MERGE INTO OSGASGAS? GASOSSA? GASOSGAS?

In an valiant effort to keep the Spanish motorcycle industry alive during Spain’s incredibly rough economic times, Gas Gas and Ossa have formally merged into one company. They will combine their engineering, R&D and human resource operations under one roof, but will remain as two distinct brands. Insiders say that it is, more accurately, an acquistion of OSSA by Gas Gas. Hopefully it will help them survive.

The icing on the cake was the 2014 MXA 250 Four-Stroke Shootout. The March issue is in the mail now. GNCC SERIES GOES BACK TO THE LOVING ARMS OF THE AMA

Back in March of 2012, MX Sports dropped its AMA sanction and decided to go it alone without the AMA. The dropping of the AMA sanction two years ago started a wave of rumors that MX Sports would try to do the same with Loretta Lynns and the AMA 250/450 Nationals. None of this was true, but what was true was that the major motorcycle manufacturers are closely aligned with the AMA, and they prefer to pursue championships in internationally recognized series. Thus, without AMA sanctioning, the GNCC was just another local series, no matter how good, competitive or valued it was. By joining forces the GNCC becomes higher profile (at least in the head offices of the Big Five) and the AMA gains a respected series into its ranks.
