The AMA and FIM have established minimum weights for modern race bikes. These rules have no other purpose than to keep the cost of racing low for the competitors. Without the minimum weight limits, a very expensive technological battle would ensue between the bucks-up factory teams using beryllium, carbon fiber, titanium and metal matrix materials to build bikes that are 20 pounds lighter than the current standards. How do we know that this weight war would take place? Because it happened before weight limits were introduced in the 1970s. Before the limits, Team Suzuki raced with 180-pound race bikes ? great for Roger DeCoster, Joel Robert and Sylvain Geboers, but not for the less well-heeled teams and riders they competed against.

Under the current rule book, the minimum motorcycle weights for the 250 Supercross/motocross classes are 194 pounds (125 two-stroke) and 212 pounds (250 four-stroke). And for the 450 classes, the weight limits are 212 pounds (250 two-stroke) and 220 pounds (450 four-stroke).

MXA weighed its stock production bikes using the AMA/FIM method?empty gas tank, but all other fluids normal. The manufacturers are trying to push “curb weight,” which is the weight of the bike with a full gas tank. MXA does not use this method because it penalizes bikes with larger fuel capacities, whether the rider fills his gas tank up or not. A gallon of gas weighs 6 pounds, but some bikes hold 1.5 gallons and some 2 gallons. Weighing the bike with the tank empty eliminates not only the variables of fuel-tank capacity, but also how much fuel the rider puts in his tank.
