The MXA wrecking crew wants to share the small handful of concepts, ideas and visions that were creative enough to make our select list of must-have products. In a fast-paced world where new products are designed and launched every day, it isn’t always the big ideas that grab the attention of motocross racers. Often it is the little things that make the most difference. Of the thousands of products that manufacturers have sprung on the motocross public, only a small handful are really revolutionary. Here is the MXA wrecking crew’s list of products that you can’t live without.
6D ATR-1 HELMET
Yes, Virginia, the 6D helmet is expensive at $750, but even at that price it is less than half the cost of a night in the hospital with a concussion. No helmet can claim to save you from all foreseeable impacts, but the 6D comes closer than any other helmet. www.6dhelmets.com
MAXIMA SC1 CLEAR COAT
With your pride, image and money wrapped up in your motorcycle, you want it to look like new every time it rolls on to the racetrack. MXA has always depended on Maxima to keep our test bikes looking new. Spray it on your faded warhorse and when you wipe it off, old Betsy will look brand new. www.maximausa.com
PRO CIRCUIT SHOCK LINKS
Although often billed as a suspension product, MXA has used longer shock linkages to lower the seat height, change the head angle and stiffen the initial part of the shock stroke. They are invaluable. www.procircuit.com or (951) 738-8050.
STEAHLY FLYWHEEL WEIGHTS
You aren’t stuck with the stock powerband on your race bike. You can make it perfect for you with everything from ignition maps to exhaust systems to gearing changes. One of the oldest and most effective mods for getting a broader, smoother and more hooked-up feel is a flywheel weight. Steahly makes flywheels for every bike under the sun in a variety of different weights. It’s great for 250cc two-strokes. www.steahlyoffroad.com
WORKS CONNECTION FACTORY 4 STAND
This is an idea that is long overdue. The Works Connection Factory 4 stand is wider and taller than the typical bike stand. Its 12-inch by 12-inch top means that you will never overshoot the stand when flinging your 240-pound four-stroke on it. Plus, thanks to the wider stance, it is more stable. www.worksconnection.com or (888) 224-9718.
KTM’s have awesome clutches—everyone else, not so much. If you can’t stand to live with your Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki or Kawasaki clutch for one more day, order a Hinson. It is the choice of virtually every factory team. www.hinsonracing.com
GYTR POWER TUNER
If you own a fuel-injected Yamaha, you need this tool (or a friend with one). It is easy to use and can make your bike run better. See your local Yamaha dealer.
If it weren’t for Canopy Cool the MXA wrecking crew would wilt in the heat of the SoCal summers. It lowers the temperature under your awning by 20 degrees and operates off your truck’s power accessory. www.canopycool.com
ARC UNBREAKABLE MEMLON LEVERS
The dream has become a reality. ARC‘s new Memlon levers are unbreakable. www.arclevers.com
IRONMAN STEEL SPROCKETS
Machined from high-quality steel and designed to maximize strength while mimimizing weight, Ironman sprockets are the choice of many of the sport’s greatest offroad riders. If you are in the market for a sprocket that lasts three times longer than aluminum—this is your best choice. www.dirttricks.com
DECAL WORKS CRF250/450 SIDE PANELS
Not only are DeCal Works CRF side panels less obtrusive, narrower and slimmer, but they turn four separate Honda OEM parts into two parts. When it comes time to replace your CRF plastic—think less, not more. www.decalmx.com
WORKS CONNECTION PRO LAUNCH
Holeshot devices have been around motocross since 1977 when Arlo Englund invented the first one. Over the years the design concept had grown stale. Then, Works Connection changed the game with a magnetic mechanism that didn’t have the failure rate of the old-school spring-loaded devices. No springs‚ just magnets. Sweet. www.worksconnection.com or (888) 224-9718.
The Kreft PowerDial bolts onto any KTM 250 or 300 two-stroke as far back as 1998. It allows instantaneous power valve adjustment without the use of tools. MXA test riders often stop by the side of the track and alter their KTM power valve settings in mere seconds. www.kreftmoto.com
STI HEAVY-DUTY TUBES
Heavy-duty tubes are a rare commodity in racing circles, but STI has opened up the pipeline with three all-new heavy-duty tubes. They make a 2mm thick Heavy Duty tube (which is what the MXA wrecking crew uses on is test bikes), a 3mm thick Extreme Duty tube that is best suited to offroad bikes and adventure bikes and finally they make a 4mm thick Ultra Heavy Duty tube for Rally bikes and big four-stroke adventure bikes.Best of all, the STI Heavy Duty tube is cheaper than most regular tubes. www.sttireandwheel.com.
THINK LIGHTWEIGHT SEAT FOAM
How would you like to save almost one full pound on your race bike for only $260. We don’t know if you care about one pound, but the factory teams do…and virtually every works bike uses this special ultra-lightweight foam. How light is it? On our KTM the stock seat foam weighed 16 ounces. The Think foam weighed 3 ounces. www.thinktechnology.us or (949) 444-4916.
NK SFS AIR TRIPLE CLAMP
The NK SFS air triple clamp has special handlebar mounts that are built on minisature air shock absorbers. By setting the pressure best suited to your track you can fine tune the feel of the half-inch of bar travel. How good are they? Good enough that Ryan Dungey, Ken Roczen, Marvin Musquin and Jason Anderson run them. www.budracing-usa.com or (951) 245-2660.
7602 RACING ADJUSTABLE KTM BRAKE PEDAL
If you race a KTM you should cosnider swicthing to a 7602 Racing aluminum brake pedal tipe. Not only does it have sharper teeth than stock, but it also comes with a brake snake hole. The 7602 Racing brake pedal tip is adjustable . Most MXA test rider run the 7602 brake pedal at its longest length. www.7602racing.com or (719) 274-0606.
TM DESIGNWORKS CHAIN GUIDE
If it wasn’t for the TM Designworks chain guide the majority of KX250Fs and KX450Fs would have been sawed in half by now. This is the ultimate chain guide. www.tmdesignworks.com or (541) 772-4161.
TREAD DOCTOR WITH SNIPER TIRE GROOVER KIT
Tires are expensive. With the Tread Doctor you can groove and cut any old tire to give it a new breath on life. The MXA wrecking crew uses the Tread Doctor’s Sniper when it is late at night and we are too lazy to change tires before tomorrow’s race. In this case, we cut our proprietary groove pattern into an old tire and give it one more day of life. www.hardlineproducts.com or (805) 581-4700.
WORKS CONNECTION KTM STEERING STEM NUT
Nothing is more frustrating than the gas cap vent hose on a KTM. For some reason KTM mounts the vent hose solidly to a plastic elbow on the side of the head tube gusset. Because it is locked on, every time you twist the gas cap the vent hose gets kinked up. Thankfully, Works Connection makes a special anodized KTM stem nut that fits better, looks better and has safety wires holes. More importantly it also has a hole drilled in it so you can stick the KTM vent hose down into the steerer tube—the way it was intended to be. www.worksconnection.com or (888) 224-9718.
