Wrecking Crew

GEORGE KOHLER: Anaheim Hills, CA. A three-time Glen Helen REM Number One rider (1996, 1997 and 2003), for decades George designed drag racing clutches for McLeod Clutches when he wasn't racing motocross. George has vast racing experience (including Europe). George is MXA's go-to-guy when the subject of nuts, bolts and metric sizes (thanks to a stint at SoCal's famous McFadden-Dale Hardware store). Today, he works at Horst Leitner's AMP Research facility in the R&D department..

WILLY MUSGRAVE: Norco, CA. An experienced mechanic and graduate of MMI, Willy has worked as the production manager of a major motorcycle company (and set up the pipe shops for several major aftermaret pipe manufacturers). He has also been the Mammoth Mountain Vet Champion, multi-time OTHG Champion, World Four-Stroke Vet Champion and finished in the top five in the World Vet Pro Championship. Today, Willy runs MTA (Motorcycle Tire & Accessories), one of the country's largest motorcycle parts distributors.

LARRY BROOKS: Temecula, CA. Larry was a child prodigy. He was not only the National Minicycle Champion, but also the AMA Rookie of Year, a top ten AMA National rider and team manager for Jeremy McGrath, Chad Reed and James Stewart. Larry joined MXA when he was 15 years old. Larry can't test or race during the Supercross season because his L&M team is a Supercross-only team, but Larry is back at the track as soon as May gets here.

RAY PISARSKI: Costa Mesa, CA. Ray is the wrecking crew specialist. Ray takes care of the suspension settings, works on our project four-strokes and keeps everything with an engine running. In between, he races and has finished in the top ten in Glen Helen Raceway's points standings seven times (and was second overall in 2002). An experienced mechanic, Ray works for AMP Research, owned by famous motorcycle designer Horst Leitner, running the R&D department.

JODY WEISEL: Norco, CA. As part of the Texas gang that included Kent Howerton, Steve Stackable, Danny Doss and Wyman Priddy, Jody was a sponsored Hodaka rider back in the day (and back then, that meant bike and parts only). Jody won the 1984 CMC Number One Vet Pro plate and 1998 Glen Helen REM Number One plate. He has finished second in Over-40 World Championship three times and sixth, seventh (twice) and tenth in Over-50 World Championships. His Bachelors, Master and Ph.D in Gerontology make him the most overeducated test riders in America.

LARS LARSSON: San Diego, CA. This Swedish GP star is a legend. Lars was the first European Grand Prix racer to immigrate to the USA to race full-time (1968). Lars raced the original Inter-Am series, was the first Husqvarna factory rider in America, was an owner of the original THOR (Torsten Hallman Off Road) and has earned several ISDE Gold medals. An AMA Hall of Fame inductee, Lars splits his time between Sweden (summer) and the USA (winter).

BILLY MUSGRAVE: Norco, CA. MXA prefers to build test riders from the ground up and Billy Musgrave, who is still in high school, got his start on minicycles. He has been testing motorcycles since he was 10 years old. There might be some nepotism involved, since Billy's dad has been a test rider for decades (or it could be that Billy is one of a host of MXA test riders who call the little SoCal town of Norco home).

BENGT JOHANSSON: Mission Viejo, CA. Part of the MXA wrecking crew's European connection, Swedish-born Bengt Johansson raced the 1996 Swedish/USA Match Races and has finished in the top five at the World Vet Championships six times. Bengt spends his weekdays at his Volvo shop. He is the 2002 Glen Helen Points Champion.

ALAN OLSON: Westminster, CA. Perhaps the most famous of the Vet racers in the USA, Alan has won the Over-40 World Championship five times ('87, '88, '89, '91), Over-50 World Championships three times ('94, '95, '97) and Over-60 World Championship once. He was CMC Number one in 1983, REM Number One rider in 1998, Eighth at 1996 Swedish/USA Match Races and a two-time Mammoth Mountain winner. He was Doug Dubach's mechanic for four years and won the AMA Mechanic of the Year Award as Chad Reed's mechanic in 2006.

CHUCK "FEETS" MINERT: Aguanga, CA. Feets Minert was one of the greatest American motorcycle racers of all-time. Feets won the Catalina GP, raced Daytona  (when it was still held on the beach), started racing in 1947, appeared in "On Any Sunday" (taking roost) and is in the AMA Hall of Fame. He has raced more motocross races than anyone alive (largely because at the age of 78 he is still racing every weekend). Feets raced the professional ranks well into his 50s and claims that he would like to keep racing until he is 80.

RICH EIERSTEDT:
Temecula, CA. Two-time AMA Trans-AMA 250 Champion, won two 500cc Supercrosses (Houston and Pontiac 1976). Rode for Team Bultaco, Honda, Harley-Davidson and Can-Am. Raced Swedish/USA Match Races in Europe (1996). Today. Rich works at Bassani.

GARY JONES: Norco, CA. Four-time AMA 250 National Champion (1971-1974), World Vet Champion (1987), AMA Inter-AMA Champion, SCORE Off-Road World Champion, Member of Motocross des Nations team. Won 11 250 Nationals. Rode for Team Yamaha, Honda, Can-Am & Ammex. Fifth in Swedish/USA Over-40 Match Races in Europe (1996). Gary is the  only man to win an AMA National Championship and the Over-30, Over-40 and Over-50 World Championships.

JOHN BASHER: Valencia, CA. With a Bachelor of Science degree from Rochester Institute of Technology, John has been on the MXA wrecking crew every since he started as a summer intern back in 2000 (when his brother Mike worked at MXA). John races every weekend when he is in the country, but his job at MXA requires him to spend a lot of time in Europe, South America and Japan. Along with his motocross background, John has experience in Supermoto, Arenacross and ice racing.

DENNIS STAPLETON: Santa Cruz, CA. Dennis has a rich history in motocross racing. A long-time in-house Honda test rider, Dennis helped develop the original CRF450 and CRF250 for Honda (at their secret desert test compound). He also has raced AMA Nationals, WORCS, Supercross and the FIM MX3 world Championship series. You can spot him at select pro races around the country. Dennis has also raced in Australia, Denmark, Guatemala and Mexico.

ZAPATA ESPINOZA: Valencia, CA. Zap rejoined MXA after a stint in the bicycle industry. He got his start in racing on the CMC motocross circuit and raced throughout California in the Trans-Cal and Golden State series. His best trophies came from winning the Open Intermediate class at the Mammoth MX and finishing seventh at the GNC Amateur Nationals held at the L.A. Coliseum. He also works on Mountain Bike Action and Road Bike Action.

JOHN MINERT: Valencia, CA. It doesn't hurt to have a grandfather who is in the AMA Hall of Fame when it comes to getting a job at MXA, but John Minert started out at the lowest rung of the MXA ladder. He has a degree in Aeronautical Sciences from Embry-Riddle College, but MXA was most interested in his riding imput from the time that he was just a kid. Today, John is an assistant editor and has gotten the opportunity to race in Europe.
