At the 45th running of the Hangtown National Ryan Villopoto and Ken Roczen made clean sweeps of both classes.

450 CLASS:

Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart holeshot Moto 1, but Ryan Villopoto took over the lead on the opening lap with  Ryan Dungey knocking on Stewart’s door. By moto’s end it was Villopoto, Dungey and Stewart. Trey Canard ran fourth the whole moto and closed in on James Stewart towards the end of moto 1. Behind Canard came Justin Barcia and Andrew Short. Lots of riders had problems in moto 1, as evidenced by Mike Alessi’s 12th, Broc Tickle’s 14th, Dean Wilson’s 17h, Justin Brayton’s 33rd and Malcolm Stewart’s 36th.

Stewart holeshot again in Moto 2, but this time had to fight off Ryan Dungey for the lead?but it wasn’t long before Ryan Villopoto passed both of them to take his second win of the day. Dungey was second and Stewart was third. Chad Reed had the flu and scored in 10th in moto one, but had nothing left for moto 2.

Ryan Villopoto said: “Hangtown has always been a rough place for me so for the bike to feel like it did today was amazing. I’m obviously happy with that and happy with how I rode. I feel like we’re in a really good place and it’s only going to get better from here.”

250 CLASS:

Fresh off a wrist injury from Supercross, Blake Baggett pulled an uncharacteristic holeshot in moto 1 with the KTM duo of Marvin Musquin and Ken Roczen quickly moving by him. Musquin led three laps before his teammate took over the lead for the remainder of Moto 1. Eli Tomac would eventually get Baggett and Musquin to take second in moto 1, with Baggett third and Musquin fourth. Cooper Webb was the best of the new crop with a solid fifth in his Pro debut. Unfortunately, he had issues in moto 2.

Zach Bell grabbed the holeshot in moto 2, but Ken Roczen and Blake Baggett were by quickly. Roczen would go on to win with Baggett in second and Tomac in third. Osborne held on for fifth behind Marvin Musquin. It was Ken Roczen’s first AMA National victory. Adam Cianciarulo did not race because of the flu. He will be in Colorado next Aaturday.

Ken Roczen said: “Coming here, I didn’t really know what to expect because I sort of took some time to have fun during the week off. It’s important to me to keep things fun but next week it’s time to put in some work and make my performance even better.”

WOMEN:

New Zealand’s Courtney Duncan swept both motos of the abbreviated WMX Women’s Championship on a YZ125 two-stroke (there are only two races left in their season?fishing seems like a good hobby for the women racers in 2013). Japan’s Sayaka Kaneshiro was second overall with a 2-3 score, while Taylor Higgins rounded out the top three. Six-time WMX champion Jessica Patterson finished second in Moto 2 but bad luck in the first moto gave her 10th overall for the day. Former Champion Ashley Fiolek has retired from racing.

Courtney Duncan qualified 4 seconds a lap faster than the second place women rider, Taylor Higgins, but Duncan’s 2:13.5 still wouldn’t have made the cut in the 250 men’s class (where the final timed qualfied rider, Trevor Ivey, did a 2:08.8). Duncan’s 2:13 would have qualified her in 66th place in the 250 National class.
