JUNE 13—WANT TO READ OUR RICKY CARMICHAEL MAIL? IT’S PRETTY COOL IN A HATE MAIL SORT OF WAY

In the July issue of MXA, we wrote that Ricky needs to work on his suspension set-up (no big surprise here, since we have quotes from both the Honda and Suzuki team managers regarding Ricky’s low-rider Supercross set-up). Additionally, we said that the biggest winners in the 2005 Supercross series were James Stewart and Chad Reed. Why? James Stewart got props because he was all anyone talked about during the whole series, and Chad Reed was singled out because, after losing for half the season, he got it back to together and put together a string of wins.

ÿ

We’re not sure how this “crucifies” Ricky Carmichael, but second-hand rumor mongering makes it sound like a major plot on our part. Isn’t it strange when saying something nice about Stewart and Reed (or criticizing RC’s suspension) is the same as “trashing” Ricky.

ÿ

Ricky got in on it at the same time, claiming that he never gives interviews to MXA, when, in fact, he just completed an interview with us two weeks ago. All of this boo-hooing is amazing, but it doesn’t change anything. We are a sports magazine. We prefer to tell it as we see it. We can understand that not everyone sees it our way—that is what opinions are for. At least we have one, the only opinion the other magazines seem to have is that they all read MXA to see what we say.

ÿ

HERE IS A SAMPLING OF OUR MAIL ON THE RICKY CARMICHAEL FLAP

ÿ

ÿ

DEAR MXA,

Did you guys see what RC said in an interview with RacerX? “What was the comment about Motocross Action in the press conference? They write good about me one weekend and write **** about me the next weekend. I have been in this sport for too long, and I think I do a great job. You know, if they can’t embrace the sport with good things to say, and they never do, then they can just leave my name out of their magazine. I don’t ever see the guy at the races, whoever is in charge of that magazine. What they put in the magazine is exactly the reason I don’t give them interviews. ” Ouch, this gave you guys some negative press.

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ

As we said, RC just completed an interview with us two weeks ago. MXA’s Tim Olson and John Kerr were at Southwick this weekend. Jody, who Ricky is referring to, was racing at Glen Helen. He races every week (can any other magazine guy say that–does any other magazine guy even race?).

ÿ

DEAR MXA,

What’s with bagging RC in your last issue? Sounds like the old schools are nothing but old fools. I’ve been reading your magazine since the 70’s. Not anymore! You guys are a joke. RC is in a class all his own. Unlike your article that shows no class. Great thing is that there’s many better mags to choose from now days. Get back to your roots, or get it all together. Who’s your daddy? RC.

ÿ

It is true that there are a great many magazines to choose from. MXA is for motocross racers and is about motorcycles, technical stories and how-to’s. It isn’t a fan magazine for posers. There are plenty of those to choose from.ÿÿÿÿ

ÿ

ÿDEAR MXA,

Concerning the current RC “controversy”, I just read your issue from front to back. I read the entire Supercross piece twice. I found only the facts as seen by your team. RC’s setup is his and his alone and I’m sure it would suck for anyone other than Ricky. Big deal. Bubba was the entire talk of the series, and Reed did make a comeback. I never sensed any “badmouthing” of RC or his talent or accomplishments. Keep up the good work, keep up providing real opinions based on real racers, and keep up staying true to your strengths. You guys get more real info for real racers across one issue than all the others combined. Do not change.

Every MXA guy races every week–which is why we have to pick straws to see who has to go cover a race (instead of racing themselves).

DEAR MXA,

Have you guys got nothing better to do than pick apart the season/career of Ricky Carmichael? Hands down the best rider on the planet and somehow he is losing his honor for winning a title. Apparently anyone without the same bike set up of you REM pro’s is doing it all wrong. DV12 runs his levers and bars too high, you guys don’t cry about that, oh yeah, because he rides a Yamaha and you people can’t get enough of the big blue.

ÿ

Nice try, but DV12 (David Vuillemin) is one of MXA’s biggest critics.ÿÿ

ÿ

DEAR MXA,

Bubba and Reed had a better year than RC. What did you morons base that on? It must be a ploy to get a little free pub on the message boards. I guess it worked but your mag lost some cred by printing a crazy article like that. Even the guys at Racer X were poking fun at it at your article.

ÿ

Of course the guys at other magazines are poking fun at MXA. They are business competitors of ours. It’s in their best interest to try to make themselves look good and us look bad. No harm. No foul.ÿÿÿ

ÿ

ÿ

DEAR MXA,

I was surprised at the trashing of RC in your article on the 2005 Supercross series. It came across as juvenile bitterness.

ÿ

We didn’t trash RC, we criticized his suspension set-up and gave props to Reed and Stewart for keeping it interesting.

ÿ

DEAR MXA,

Did you know those idiots at RacerX are saying garbage about you and your magazine, all about how you fried Carmichael up on a platter in front of everyone and how ungrateful you are for his wins. What is Davey Coombs problem? Davey Coombs whines like an old lady about you guys and your piece on Carmichael. RacerX Illiustrated is all show and no go. You tell it like it is …not like the politically correct wimp writing Davey “I love you mommy” Coombs writes. Keep up the good work guys and keep on telling it like it is.

ÿ

There is no need to crucify people for their opinion or style–after all, this is only about perception.ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ

ÿ

DEAR MXA,

I can’t believe you wrote that Carmichael is not the real winner in the 2005 supercross series. I’m not sure if you know this or not but he won the championship and the most races. In a few years, most people aren’t going to remember who came in second. If you ask Bubba, Reed or any of the pros whose season they would want to trade with, I bet it would be Ricky and not Bubba “The big winner.”

ÿ

Ricky won the Championship, but Stewart got all the press. That is why we think he came out of his abbreviated and crash-filled series as the big winner. RC still got all the money.

ÿ

DEAR MXA,

To slam Ricky is truly an insult, but it also says something about you or did you not think that the things you envy/ dislike you see in others you see inside yourselves first? You would be well advised to not only offer (on your knees with a contrite heart) an apology to Ricky, Roger, Mike, Mr & Mrs Carmichael, Suzuki and all the people in our sport, public and private as well as to God for taking cheap shots at one of His children.

ÿ

Aren’t we His children too? ÿÿÿÿ

ÿ

DEAR MXA,

As a reader of every MXA ever published and an owner of every issue published in the 70’s including 51st issues you could say that I am a true fan of your magazine. I have numerous times defended your critics on motoboards and stuck up for your archiac ideas. However with your latest uncalled for attack on who is the greatest motocrosser of all-time I will continue to read MXA as it is a publication that is about the sport I love but I will no longer defend you when the critics start burning you at the stake.

ÿ

Good thing we didn’t criticize his lever position.ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ

ÿ

DEAR MXA,

Your comments on RC are wrong. 5 billion plus people in the world and he is the best ever to ride a dirt bike. Championships prove this. Bubba is the looser of the year. What a joke, win, crash, win, crash.

ÿ

Looser?

ÿ

DEAR MXA,

If Tim Ferry is the best you can do for a interview then god help your mag.

ÿ

Isn’t it strange to defend Ricky, from what you considered unfair criticism, by attacking Tim Ferry?ÿÿ

ÿ

Dear MXA,

I just discovered your magazine after two years of subscribing to Racer X. I leaned more in that edition than I did in 2 years of reading Racer X. Keep up the good work.

ÿ

ÿ

DEAR MXA,

I guess the “Secret World of Cam Chains” just isn’t selling mags anymore, so you have to resort to these Jerry Springer tactics.

ÿ

MXA writes tech articles to help racers learn more about their bikes. If MXA didn’t do tech articles, there wouldn’t be any written anywhere.

ÿ

ÿDEAR MXA,

Your opinionated writing makes us all look bad. I think it is important to complain about what is wrong, but reading your mag makes me think you hate everything about our sport.

ÿ

It is true that we have an opinion about what’s wrong with our sport and what’s right. Doesn’t it seem strange that everyone in the sport complains about the way things are in private, but never says it in public. MXA says what other people are either afraid to say or are paid not to say. ÿÿÿÿ ÿ

ÿ

DEAR MXA,

I have been reading MXA for the past 25 years and I am big time fan of your great mag, but the comments of the Racer X website do not speak very well of your mag.

ÿ

What a surprise that a business competitor would say bad things about something in MXA. Who would have thunk it?

ÿ

DEAR MXA,

How can you even try to discredit Ricky for winning the Supercross championship? I mean seriously. Did anyone else have more race wins than him? No. Did anyone else make the podium at every race? No. Don’t think I don’t like your magazine. I think it is, hands down, the best magazine ever. It’s just that Ricky is my hero, and I can’t stand it when people discredit him.

ÿ

We have given tons of credit to Ricky. We criticized his suspenion set-up…and, for everyone out there who is offended, we have actually ridden virtually every one of Ricky Carmichael’s bikes since his KX80 days. His Supercross set-up is way weird, although his four-stroke outdoor set-up is fairly normal.

ÿ

DEAR MXA,

What is with the harsh words for RC. For the first time ever, I was bummed with you guys. You should be ashamed!

ÿ

We are pretty sure that anyone who reads the actual magazine, will not find any “harsh” words for Ricky. This is a manufacturered controversy.

ÿ

DEAR MXA,

I read your latest issue cover to cover, yet I was shocked when I learned you slammed RC in it. Where was it? I’ve reread about ten times. His setup has always been on the weird side (meaning bad). It’s not trash-talking, it’s the truth. Other mags don’t like you because you are more experienced, and more honest then they could ever hope to be. Sounds like MXA is the one recieving “cheap shots”. Stay strong, you guys have been here before, and it always blows over. Your true fans will always be here, because without you we’d never have understood jetting, or suspension set-up, or race gas, or anything for that matter. Ricky Carmichael has been my favorite racer since ’99 by the way, and I find no faults in anything you’ve ever said about him.

ÿ

It’s nice to read letters from people who have actually read the story.

DEAR MXA,

Maybe you need to do an article on Bubba Stewart and how he is the big loser already in the outdoors from all his moto quitting. Either this guy is the biggest wimp and baby of all time or else he needs major medical attention. However I notice he always gets released at the track as being ok. Of course I know you will never say boo about Bubba and we both know why don’t we?

ÿNo, we don’t know why. You lost us early on and if your drift is racial, you lost us completely.
