MUDPOMEROYThe late Jim Pomeroy (57) had a very unusual approach to this muddy day. He got the holeshot, but he has already pitched his goggles away before the first turn. He’s fixing that by riding with his eyes closed.

mudAlways stylish, five-time World Champion Roger DeCoster looks like he’s riding down a boulder strewn stream during the 1974 Trans-AMA series.

MUDFEETSCARLSBADBSA’s Chuck “Feets” Minert would never admit that his BSA wasn’t the best waterproofed bike in the world. However, his jeans are remarkably clean and the clump of mud on his rear tire is remarkably large.

KETCHMUD1000These two Texans know a thing or two about mud — most importantly how to enjoy it. In this 1977 photo, Bell made Jody Weisel (left) a special ventless helmet for mud races. He also taped on a goggle lens to lengthen his visor and, in a pinch, he could use his flowing locks to wipe the goggles clean. Meanwhile, his partner in crime, Dennis “Ketchup” Cox (right) went with an open face helmet and second set of Carrera goggles over the first ones. Why use tearoff when you can just tear off goggles? Ketchup also has a mud suit on, but appears to have forgotten to button it up.
