450 CLASS

One race after capturing back-to-back 450 Supercross Championships, Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopotowon his ninth win of the season in convincing fashion.

Villopoto holeshot the 20-lap 450 main event with Nick Wey and Jake Weimer close behind. It didn’t take long for Villopoto to open a gap on the field, ultimately taking a wire-to-wire win. “The track was tough, so the bike was a big key. The track was breaking down and it had a lot of ruts, so it was easy to get caught off guard. You had to stay on toes and try to log consistent laps. I’m looking forward to returning home next week (in Seattle).”

Josh Grant and Mike Alessi were both desperate for a good finish and Grant kept a consistent gap over third place Alessi. The unlicky Alessi hit lapped rider while running third and fell. That allowed Team Hondas Justin Brayton to grab the final spot on the podium. Grant’s runner-up effort was his best finish since winning the opening race of the 2009 Monster Energy Supercross season and also signified the inaugural podium finish for the first-year Jeff Ward Racing team.

250 CLASS

In the 250 East Justin Barcia secured his second-consecutive 250 East title with a fourth-place finish, while Pro Circuit’s Darryn Durham won the first 250 Supercross victory of his career.

As the gates dropped Alex Martin holeshot with Durham working his way by on the second lap. Malcolm Stewart took over second, while Barcia  settled into third. Barcia only needed a fourth or better to clinch the second and final 250 Supercross crown?he will have to move to the 450 class next season in Supercross.

Stewart made it six laps before crashing out in the whoops, allowing Barcia, Ken Roczen and Blake Baggett to duel for the second step on the podium. Baggett won the scuffle and actually caught Durham near the end when his Kawasaki teammate missed the rythmn section. Baggett made several passing attempts, but had to settled for second as Durham calmed down.

“This is at the top of the list (of accomplishments),” said Durham. “I’m speechless. It was a great race and I couldn’t have done it without my team. I’m super excited, but just don’t know what to say. I had a rough practice and heat race, but got great start. I think I led all the laps, but I don’t even know.” Barcia’s fourth, his first time off the podium this season was good enough for the title.
