RYAN VILLOPOTO: “I KNEW I HAD TO MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN”

With 60,178 fans at the Edward Jones Dome, Ryan Villopoto won his fourth 450 Supercross of the nine-race series (with 8 rounds to go). Mike Alessi got the holeshot with Justin Barcia in second and James Stewart in third. Points leader Davi Millsaps was eighth place on lap one.

Stewart took the lead on lap two, but the race was stopped when Kyle Chisholm crashed. The race was restarted with a staggered start, with Ryan Villopoto moved back three places for jumping through the red cross flags.

The penalty fired Villopoto up and he came from fifth place to pass Stewart for the lead on lap 13. From there on it was smooth ailing for RV. Justin Barcia, in third, made a mistake and allowed Chad Reed to get by for the final podium spot. Davi Millsaps maintains the points lead after finishing sixth, but it was cut down to 12 points with Ryan Dungey in third. James Stewart said, “Villopoto caught me by surprise on the pass, but I was still able to keep it together and hold the second place spot. It was one heck of a race tonight. That’s what it’s about.”

“It was a crazy night out there,” said Villopoto. “I made a costly mistake on the first start, so I knew my work was cut out for me. I was able to make things happen on the second start and get out in front after some wild racing. It’s coming down to crunch time and we were all able to make it happen tonight.”
