STEWART DROPS FARTHER ADRIFT IN ANAHEIM: RYAN VILLOPOTO STAMPS HIS MARK ON THE 2013 SUPERCROSS SEASON; DUNGEY SIXTH; DAVI KEEPS THE RED PLATE

Every series, be it NASCAR, F1 or MotoGP, is all about the math. Although Supercross riders love the $100,00 bonuses they get for winning, what they really covet are the points, 25 big ones, for notching a Supercross W. Here is what is happening on the math front:

ANAHEIM 2 RACE RECAP WITH JIM HOLLEY

Total totals: Only 22 riders have earned points in the first three racers. The extra two riders are Chris Blose (Phoenix) and Jimmy Albertson (A2). The number probably would have stayed at 21, but Kevin Windham decided not to ride A2 because of a sore back…and then retired.

Three-peats: 18 riders have score points in all three races. The only riders who haven’t three-peated are Jimmy Albertson (1), Chris Blose (1), Bobby Kiniry (2) and Kevin Windham (2).

The red plate: Davi Millsaps will take the red points leader plate with him to Oakland. Even Davi is amazed that the big guns haven’t taken it away from him. And each week that he keeps it he becomes more determined to hold on to it. Davi has gone 1-3-4 so far.

CHAD REED: “I’M NOT HAPPY BECAUSE I WANT TO RIDE BETTER”

The Chadder: Chad Reed hasn’t made much noise this season, but he has been there, albeit almost invisible. Chad has scored two fourths and a third (and his third was achieve by chasing Davi Millsaps for most the Anaheim II final before making the pass when davi fell). Chad’s consistency has been rewarded with a third overall in the points standings…and he is only 7 points out of first.

Winners: Three races, three winners. Millsaps (A1), Barcia (Phoenix) and Villopoto (A2) will be joined at some point by Reed, Dungey or Canard in the winner’s circle.

Stewie: It is no fun to ride with an injury and even less fun to not be contesting for wins that you thought were in the bag, but James Stewart has soldiered on through three races with a torn ACL. He has gone 8-7-12 and is now 27 points behind Davi Millsaps. The significance of that is that you can only earn 25 points for a win, which means that Stewart has dug a one-race hole. But, he is not out of it yet, because he is only one moto behind Millsaps, everyone else is still on the same race as him. James is ninth in 2013 Supercross points.

BIg Four: Before the season started the BIg Four were Chad Reed, Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey and James Stewart. Apart from Stewart’s troubles Chad is third in points (only 7 points back), Villopoto is fourth in points (11 points adrift), Dungey is fifth in points (15 points behind). Stewie is ninth (27 points back). There are 14 races to go, so nothing is over for any of the four.

Purse money: Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know that it doesn’t pay to race motorcycles, but Davi Millsaps has earned $19,500 in AMA purse money in the last three weeks. With a win in Oakland next Saturday his take home pay for the month of January would be $31,500 in purse money alone (not counting any manufacturers, sponsors, gear, helmet, goggle or energy drink bonuses).

Bam Bam: Justin Barcia tweeted, “Maybe a broken nose. Some stitches in the eye and some glue on the nose and I will be all good.” Things change fast in Supercross. Last week Justin was on top of the podium, this week he crashed out and hit his face. His points take for Anaheim 2? 1 point.

Bad boy: A little word about John Hansen, no, not that word. After being fined and bench for the Phoenix Supercross, he was back for A2. In one of those funny twists, Josh qualified 39th for the night show and the guy he rammed at A1, Alex Ray, qualified a tenth of second behind him in 40th. Josh didn’t show up at the starting line for his heat race.
