The 2013 KTM 450SXF is the king of production horsepower.

MXA dynos every bike we test. However, before you read the numbers, you need to understand some basic facts about dyno runs.

First, we use the same dyno for every bike (and have used the same dyno for years), which means that all the numbers are comparable and accurate (but not to any other dyno). This is important, because no two dynos are alike?and you can’t compare dyno runs on bikes that are done on different dynos. Our slavish devotion to the same dyno means that all of our numbers?from bike to bike and year to year?are in sync with each other.

Second, it should be noted that dynos don’t go to the starting line, and often the numbers can be very misleading. It is not uncommon for a bike with great dyno numbers to be just average on the racetrack (and vice versa). The 2013 YZ450F is a classis example of this ?great on the dyno, so-so on the track.

Third, MXA doesn’t use dyno numbers to determine whether a bike is fast or slow; we use test riders and races for that. We use the dyno stats for comparison purposes. Bikes on the same dyno can have their powerbands compared, plus modifications can be checked against the base numbers. This cannot be done if you switch dynos.

Finally, it is not uncommon for different dynos to deliver drastically different horsepower numbers. This may seem to make the information suspect?especially if one dyno produces more power than another dyno?but dyno numbers are exclusive to each dyno. MXA does compare our dyno numbers against factory dynos for our own knowledge. What we learn by doing this is that if our dyno claims that a bike makes 51 horsepower and Honda’s dyno claims 49 horsepower, the two-horsepower difference will remain constant across all the other Honda models. This means that if we measure 53 horsepower, Honda’s dyno will measure 51 and so on.

Here are MXA’s peak horsepower numbers for the 2013 bikes.
