2021 REDBUD NATIONAL PRE-RACE REPORT: INJURED LIST, TV SCHEDULE & MORE

RedBuddddddddddddd. Sorry, around this time of year, we get to expereince one of the greatest cultural phenomenons in all of Motocross. A race so legendary that a single fan in a sea of red, white, & blue screaming the name can cause a chain reaction heard throughout the entire track. Red Bud is one of the most exciting venues in Motocross as Daytona is in Supercross, in fact, probably more exciting. Typically held on the same weekend as the 4th of July, the RedBud National is easily the most Patriotic race probably in the entire world (we are not fact checking this, just accept it) as our nation’s colors are the only dress code rule. RED, WHITE, & BLUE

If you weren’t aware, these kind of sporting events have dress codes. Well, not really, but it’s sorta implied, kind of. Being on the day before the 4th of July, it is common practice as Americans to grab anything that sports our nation’s three colors, some lawn chairs, and a massive cardboard cutout of your favorite rider’s head. We may have had a RedBud race last year but it wasn’t quite the same as the only fans there were riders from the next few days and their families. Now that COVID restrictions have been lifted, we expect the same insanely huge turnout for the race that we’ve seen in years past.

VIP TICKET ACCESS TO PITS

Want your favorite rider to sign your newborn baby’s forehead? Well, now’s your chance again.

RedBud will also be the first race this season to allow access to the pits again for the fans. So far this season, only individuals with access badges were allowed to get a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on off the track. But now, those with VIP tickets are allowed to visit their favorite rider’s rig.

“Although pit access has remained closed to the public since the season began, the limited reopening will provide VIP ticket holders with exclusive access to the paddock from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. noon, local event time. During the limited reopening, access to the riders and their respective team pit areas is not permitted and fans granted access must observe established boundaries. Rider autograph sessions will not be scheduled, but access to rider posters may be made available at the discretion of each individual team.”

DYLAN FERRRANDIS TAKES THE POINTS LEAD

Dylan has regained the red plate heading to Red Bud.

After an awesome battle at High Point Raceway between the top five in the 450 class, it was Dylan Ferrandis who came out on top with the overall and red plate in hand. It’s been a wild ride this season as Ferrandis, Roczen, and Cianciarulo went back and forth for the entirety of High Point’s second 450 moto resulting in Eli Tomac grabbing the win, Ferrandis coming in second, and Roczen getting third. We’re hoping that the battles continue in the premier class and that more may join the fray, as we saw more glimpses of Plessinger, Sexton, and more running up near the front.

JETT LAWRENCE HOLDS THE LEAD IN THE 250 CLASS

Jett is quite popular with the ladies.

Jett Lawrence may not have won any races at High Point but he did make a pretty killer impression with the fans, creating a competition to win one of his thousand jerseys if they created the best poster. He landed in second overall, coming up right behind Jalek Swoll who not only grabbed the first moto win of his career but his first overall win as well. Now Jett Lawrence heads to RedBud with a sizable lead after second place’s Justin Cooper sits 11 points behind.

ZACH OSBRONE | INJURED BACK

Zach Osborne re-aggravated the back injury he sustained while training during the Supercross season at the Thunder Valley National and he is out for the summer. 

JASON ANDERSON | BROKEN HAND

A bad get-off in practice would result in a broken hand. It is uncertain when he will be back.

ALEX MARTIN | BROKEN ARM

One of the gnarliest crashes in the 2021 season occurred when Alex Martin landed in a soft spot heading down Thunder Valley’s massive hill, derailing the Troll Train and leaving one of our favorite 250 vets injured and out of the season. 

CAMERON MCADOO | FRACTURED TIBIA

The 31 of Cameron McAdoo was decommissioned after a very unfortunate crash during the second moto at Fox Raceway, fracturing the top of his tibia and pulling his ACL. Cameron has already begun the surgery and healing process and we’re hoping to see him back on the track.

REDBUD TV SCHEDULE

The first motos will be shown live on MavTV and Peacock, but the second motos will be delayed on NBC Sports. 

Brandon Scharer is a riding coach at the ClubMX training facility, but this weekend he’s switching roles and will be a racer in the 250 class at RedBud. 

Southern California native, Brandon Scharer turned Pro at the end of the 2012 season and raced full-time through the 2018 season. His career best finish came in the 450 class at the Thunder Valley National in 2018 when he a scored 10th overall finish. Now, Brandon is using his knowledge and experience to help guide the next generation of riders at ClubMX to success.

With ClubMX Yamaha’s 250 rider Joey Crown out for the season with a head injury, the team decided to call Brandon back up to the big leagues for a one-off race at RedBud. ClubMX stated: “Scharer has been instrumental in working with Garrett Marchbanks this season and wants to help him improve his craft on the bike and what better way to do that than riding in the same class as him.” 

Brandon Scharer won the Junior 25+ class at the Loretta Lynn’s Amateur National last year and he is preparing to go back to The Ranch again this August, but he (like Levi Kitchen) is taking advantage of the relatively new MX Sports rule that allows him to race a few Pro National events as well.

Brandon Scharer posted via instagram:  “I first off want to say how thankful I am for this opportunity to race this weekend with the @clubmx race team. I feel like as a racer, and now more importantly a trainer I feel it is important to stay current and knowledgeable in a constantly evolving sport. As some of you know I’ve been keeping current on the amateur circuit, racing Loretta’s and Mini O’s, but my last “real” pro outdoor National was Ironman 2018. Back then I was just a privateer racing every weekend to survive and keep my career going. Unfortunately after an injury I gave up racing full time as it was impacting me physically and financially. To be lining up again, especially at RedBud is something I will be forever grateful for. I’ve seen the sport change so much in just these three years, so I’m going to utilize my racing skills to evolve with the sport as long as I can.  I’m for sure taking this as a learning experience, but I’ll be giving it my all this weekend no doubts about that! Thank you to everyone who came together to make this possible!”
