PRO CIRCUIT’S SPECIAL ORDER TRIPLE CLAMPS FOR 2003-2006 KX125 & KX250 TWO-STROKES

k††If you have a classic 2003-2006 Kawasaki KX125 or KX250 (or a 2004-2005 KX250F) Pro Circuit plans to make a special run of triple clamps. Plus, they will be anodized in the deep brown color that the race team used back in the day. The catch? They are only going to make a limited run of these clamps. However, they will put your name on the list and make a set just for you. To tell Pro Circuit that you’d like to get a set contact them by email at [email protected]

IRISH RACER GETS FOUR-YEAR BAN FOR DRUG VIOLATION

sport-ireland-logoRoss Fanning, a 28-year-old motocross racer, failed a drug test after participating in a Motocross event at Gormanstown. He was selected for a drug test because he finished second in the race and provided a urine sample to the Irish Sport Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel. The sample showed evidence of the prohibited substance, Benzoylecgonine (cocaine). The test was administered on July 31, 2016, Fanning was formally charged August 26, 2016, and placed on provisional suspension. He did not appeal the suspension. Had he appealed, the best he could have hoped for was a two-year suspension, assuming he could prove that the drug was unrelated to sports performance and taken out of competition. However, Fanning offered no defense and did not make any pleas to the Irish Sport Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel…or even attend the hearing.

On March 2, 2017, the panel issued its findings as follows: “In the absence of any evidence or submissions by or on behalf of Mr. Fanning and on the basis of the evidence submitted by Sport Ireland, the Panel finds that there was an [Anti-Doping Rule Violation] by Mr. Fanning. No evidence in mitigation has been advanced by or on Mr. Fanning’s behalf. In all the circumstances, the Panel considers that the appropriate sanction is a period of ineligibility of 4 years.”

WHAT IS THE EASIEST SUPERCROSS TO MAKE NIGHT SHOW?

eli tomacEli Tomac didn’t have to worry about making the night show last week in Toronto. Photo: Brian Converse

There is no doubt that if you want to make the night show at an AMA 450 Supercross, Toronto is the place to go. Over their nine-race history, five of those years insured that every rider who signed up for the 450 class would make the fast 40 — and be in the heat races. This year, only 39 riders rode practice. The least riders to ever sign up in Toronto was 23 in 2010. The second least was 31 riders in 2008. Just for comparison, the average number of rider signing up for the 450 class over the first nine rounds of the 2017 AMA Supercross series is 52 riders (and that includes Toronto’s 39 riders

Cunningham was riding for the Blue Buffalo team, but resigned two weeks ago. GODSPEED! TIM HART (1949-2017)

timhart1Cycle News is reporting that former Team Yamaha rider Tim Hart passed away on Monday, March 6. Here is a memorium written by Steve Bauer

“Legendary Motocrosser Tim Hart Passes –Tim Hart passed away Monday, March 6, and with him passed a piece of all of us who raced during the early years of motocross in Southern California. Who could forget the images of Tim Hart railing a berm on a big square barrel Maico, his long hair flowing, with his name, TIM HART, emblazoned on his Hallman chest protector?  Tim and his trademark orange Bell Star helmet, with the white crosshatching were a fixture at tracks like Ascot, Lions and Irwindale and epitomized everything that any kid with a dirt bike wanted to be in the early seventies.

“Hart raced a privateer Maico in the Trans-AMA series in 1971-72, before being hired by factory Yamaha in 1973 and staying through 1975. Hart won a 250 National at Lake Whitney and a pair of 125 Nationals, one at Mid-Ohio in 1974 and at Hangtown in ’75.  Despite finishing second in 1975 to Marty Smith in the 125 Championship series, Hart’s Yamaha contract was not renewed. Following an unremarkable year as a Can-Am mounted privateer, Hart retired from racing at the end of 1976.  He settled into a life as a longshoreman, working the controls of a crane, loading and unloading shipping containers.

Tim Hart was born on Christmas day in 1949 and grew up in Torrance, California. He lived in the area his entire life, right up to his death, at age 67.  Tim’s lifelong friend, Mike Chamberlain, lamented that Hart’s death was the result of liver failure and that he had just gotten on a transplant list as recently as a week ago.  Our condolences to Tim Hart’s family, friends and legion of fans.  He was an icon and is already missed.”

SWM MOTORCYCLES PLANS TO SELL 6000 BIKES IN 2017

swm300RSWM 300RS offroad bike.

We forgive you if you’ve never seen an SWM motorcycle. And if you had, you might have mistaken it for the pre-KTM Husqvarna. It is no secret that SWM’s are built in the same factory that Huskys came from before KTM bought the brand name and moved production to Italy. But, even though, you’ve never heard of them, SWM claims that they are on track to sell 6000 bikes in 2017. While SWM’s are built from BMW/Husqvarna engine designs, they are, in fact, financed by the Chinese Shineray Group.

SWMSuperdualAdventureSWM 600cc Super Dual.

SWM’s biggest selling units are their enduro and dual sport bikes. The only confusing thing about SWM’s claim that they will sell 6000 motorcycles this year is that they are claiming that the American market will help them get to that number. But, SWM hasn’t sold any bikes in the USA yet, as importer Pete Vetrano is still getting the dual sport models bikes though the EPA paperwork. SWM USA has been racing their small number of bikes in endurance races to prove their reliability—and have been having good results. Eventually, SWM will be a player in the USA and they will be offering five models—the RS300R, RS500R, RS650R, SM500R and SM600 Super Dual adventure bike.

WORLD TWO-STROKE CHAMPIONSHIP IS A GATEWAY TO THE GLEN HELEN NATIONAL

KX500Sean Collier (207) will be at the World Two-Stroke Championship on his KX500 Beast.

Good news for smoker fans! There will be a two-stroke class at the 2017 AMA 250/450 National at Glen Helen on May 27, 2017. This is a great opportunity, not only for the fans to see and hear the sounds of two-strokes, but for Pro riders, both young and old, to race on a full-blown AMA National track on the same day as Dungey, Musquin, Seely, Anderson, Osborne, Baggett, Webb and Tomac. How does a rider qualify to be invited into the National two-stroke field? That’s simple. A little more than a month before the Glen Helen National, the 2017 MTA World Two-Stroke Championship will be held at Glen Helen on Saturday, April 15 (with an $8000 purse). The top 20 Pro riders from the World Two-Stroke Championship will automatically be seeded into the Glen Helen National Two-Stroke Challenge field. Glen Helen will invite “wild card” riders to fill any spots that are vacated by Pro riders who are entered into the AMA 250 or 450 National classes (and thus can’t take their spot in the two-stroke race). For more information about the Glen Helen National and the MTA World Two-Stroke Championship, go to www.glenhelen.com.

STILL NO USGP TRACK ANNOUNCED AFTER TWO WEEKS

qatarMXGP14We hate to lose Qatar because rarely do you find a Grand Prix track that has nothing obstructing the view from one end of the track to the other. No trees, no hills and no spectators.

Giuseppe Luongo claimed two weeks ago that he would announce a new USGP track by now. Nothing has  happened —except for him denying that there is a rainy season in Indonesia—which comes as a shock to meteorologists who actually have dates for the beginning and end of the Monsoon season in Southeast Asia. Back to the USGP—there are rumors about who or where would be willing to host a USGP and counter-rumors that say that Spain will take the date. With Qatar not renewing it’s contract for the future, Youthstream said that they were also looking at other Middle East countries to replace Qatar. We think that Kuwait would be the front runner, but Giuseppe is reportedly talking about Iran.what next? North Korea?

ELI TOMAC GETS BACK TO WITHIN ONE RACE OF DUNGEY

oakland-9309Millsaps, Dungey, Baggett and Anderson make the first turn look like an Austrian parade.

Last weekend Ryan Dungey was the only racer actually racing on the ninth round—every other racer was 25 points of more behind him (and thus they were still on race eight). Now, after Eli Tomac’s win in Toronto, the Kawasaki rider has crept back onto the same moto. Tomac is 24 points behind Dungey heading to Daytona. With 25 points up for grabs at each race, there are 200 points left for any rider who can sweep the boards over the next 8 races. However, for every 25-point increment that a rider falls behind the points leader, he becomes one full race out of the lead. Here are the riders who are one, two, three, four and five races behind the points leader.

ON THE SAME RACE ON THE SAME RACE

Eli Tomac and Ryan Dungey are the only racers at Dayton who are racing on the same race. Tomac is 24 points back—which means that if Dungey fails to qualify, Tomac can take the points lead. But if Dungey makes the main and finishes last, they will be tied.

marvin musquinMarvin Musquin is teetering on the edge of falling out of the points chase. Daytona is very crucial to the French rider/

ONE RACE BEHIND (MORE THAN 25 POINTS OUT OF THE LEAD)

Marvin Musquin suffered from the flu in Toronto and is now 39 points behind Dungey and 15 points behind Eli Toamc. Musquin is also only 4 points in front of Honda’s Cole Seely (who is 43 points behind Dungey). Only Musquin and Seely are one race plus points behind Dungey.

jason andersonJason Anderson is in no man’s land. He is the only rider two races back from Dungey—everyone else is much farther back, save for Musquin, Tomac and Seely.

TWO RACES BEHIND (MORE THAN 50 POINTS OUT OF THE LEAD)

Jason Anderson is 73 points out of the lead (because he broke the spoke sin his front wheel in Toronto and lost 20 points in one weekend). That is two full races, plus 23 points. Jason stands alone at two races behind Dungey. Every other rider is at least three races back. Here is a quick rundown.

THREE OR MORE RACES BEHIND (MORE THAN 75 POINTS OUT OF THE LEAD)

Davi Millsaps (76 points back) — three races and 1 point.
Dean Wilson (90 points back) — three races and 15 points.
Chad Reed (91 points back) — three races and 16 points.
Blake Baggett (91 points back) — three races and 16 points.
Broc Tickle (98 points back) — three races and 23 points.
Cooper Webb (103 points back) — four races and 3 points.
Josh Grant (109 points back) — four races and 9 points.
Justin Brayton (118 points back) — four races and 18 points.
Jake Weimer (119 points back) — four races and 19 points.
Ken Roczen (123 points back) — four races and 23 points.
Everybody else:  Starting with 17th place every other rider is at least five races behind Ryan Dungey after 8 races. This list includes Malcolm Stewart, Mike Alessi, Justin Bogle, Weston Peick and Trey Canard (all of which missed races do to injury or a late starts).
