2022 GLENDALE SUPERCROSS PRE-RACE REPORT: TRIPLE CROWN, INJURED LIST, TV SCHEDULE & MORE

2022 GLENDALE SUPERCROSS PRE-RACE REPORT: TRIPLE CROWN, INJURED LIST, TV SCHEDULE & MORE

The West Coast rounds finally make their way out of California and into Arizona for the fifth round of the 2022 Monster Energy Supercross season. State Farm Stadium is the home of the Cardinals football team and marks the first coliseum race of the season. With one of the craziest track layouts, we’re excited to witness the racing that is to come in both the 250 and 450 classes. In the lites, Christian Craig continues his lead after taking the win at Anaheim 2. Hunter Lawrence trails 11 points behind with Michael Mosiman sitting in third, 14 points behind Christian. In the 450s, Eli Tomac kept the red plate in his possession after grabbing his first win on the Star Racing Yamaha. Chase Sexton is second in the points, just 6 points behind Eli while Jason Anderson sits 8 points behind the leader.

See below for this Saturday’s TV and online streaming schedule, the track map, current point standings and injured list. Stay tuned to Motocross Action for more coverage from Glendale by clicking the link below:

ELI LEADS THE WAY

After grabbing his first win of the season and on his new Yamaha ride, Eli leads the 450 class with a 6 point gap on Chase Sexton.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A TRIPLE CROWN?

While it may not be every rider’s favorite race format, it does provide a very exciting show. We only get to experience triple crown racing three times in a season.

Heat races are thrown out of the window and instead, three “Main-Event” styled races for each class contribute to their overall points earned. However, the risk factor of injury is greatly increased as now there are basically three main events for each class, which means a lot more high-risk racing instead of playing it safe in the Heats, making the Main, and then making the big moves there. Triple Crown racing makes the fans stand at their seats so it makes sense as to why the different styled event format exists. The last thing the West 250 class needs is more injuries, but thankfully, Triple Crown only comes around a couple of times a season.

GLENDALE SUPERCROSS HISTORY LESSON

The First 450SX Class race held in Arizona was on May 10, 1986, in Tempe, Arizona’s Sun Devil Stadium (Arizona State University) and Rick Johnson won on a Honda. It was the penultimate race of the 1986 season and Johnson had already wrapped up the Championship.

Arizona has hosted five races in Tempe, 17 in Phoenix, and five in Glendale. This will be the 28th race held in the Arizona market and the sixth for Glendale’s State Farm Stadium.

For the second time in-a-row Glendale will be a triple-crown event. The 2020 Glendale triple-crown featured the one and only sweep that either class has seen in a triple-crown when Ken Roczen won all three races. Glendale joins Anaheim as venues to host multiple triple-crowns in their history.

Kawasaki has the most wins in Arizona with 9 in total. This probably wasn’t the best photo to use for this statistic.

2022 GLENDALE TRACK MAP

The insane starting gate, mile-long start straight, long sand turn, and more prove that Dirt Wurx are testing the skills of the fastest riders on the planet.

INJURED LIST:

ADAM CIANCIARULO | KNEE

Adam Cianciarulo was already racing with an injured shoulder and now he has an injured knee. Click here to read more

JOEY SAVATGY | KNEE

Joey Savatgy tore his ACL in his right knee during practice on Tuesday after Anaheim 1. He raced through the injury at Oakland and finished 11th, but a first turn crash in his Heat race at San Diego ended his night and season early. Joey posted via instagram: “Well. I tried, I love this job so much and sometimes it’s cruel. Trying to race and not being near 100% isn’t ideal, especially in this class. Yesterday was tough, with a track filled with right handers and some tough whoops the knee gave me all it could. But the crash in the heat was the final straw, so I’ve decided to get my knee fixed. Anyone who supports team 17 I appreciate you more than you know, sometimes it feels like you keep getting punched in the face but this will pass. I will keep everyone updated as events happen. I will be back”

SETH HAMMAKER | LACERATED SPLEEN & FRACTURED T7/T8 VERTABRA

Pro Circuit’s Seth Hammaker had finished second in each of the first two rounds, but after a crash at the test track, he will be out of action for an undetermined amount of time.

Seth Hammaker posted on Instagram: “Hey guys I hate to post this news but unfortunately this week I had a practice crash getting ready for San Diego. Grade 3 spleen laceration and compression fractures in T7 and T8 in my back. I’m gutted to say the least. The team and I have been working hard to bring our best every weekend. I appreciate there support through all of the good and bad! The main goal now is to heal up right and completely before we get back to racing. I will keep y’all informed of how long I will be out as we know a little more. Thanks to everyone for the support I will be back better and stronger.”

BENNY BLOSS | ANKLE/COLLARBONE

Benny Bloss switched from MotoConcepts Honda to Team Tedder KTM for 2022, but he was injured before the season. Benny has had surgery on his ankle an collarbone and will return as soon as possible. Josh Hill is currently filling-in for Benny.

JUSTIN HILL | SHOULDER

We don’t know when Justin Hill will be back at the races, hopefully sooner than later.

JUSTIN COOPER | BROKEN FOOT

Sadly, the defending 250 West Coast Champion is out for the entire Supercross season in 2022. Read his post on Instagram below:

Justin Cooper stated: “Hey guys unfortunately I had a crash yesterday at the track. I got a little bit off line in a rhythm and didn’t get the lift for the next triple and cased it pretty hard which was fine. Almost had it saved and when I finally laid it down my foot got pinched under the footpeg. That being said it turns out i have broken and dislocated 4 metatarsals and have some fractures in the center of my foot as well. Will most likely get surgery early next week. Not the way I wanted to start the year off, everything has been going really good until this. This is called a Lisfranc injury and will probably put me off the bike for about 6 months. Tough pill to swallow but this is part of life and you have these obstacles. How you overcome these difficulties is what defines you. I’ll keep you guys updated once I know more, it’s all very fresh so just giving a quick update on what I know so far. I will be missing all of SX, hopefully will be good to go for MX”

COLT NICHOLS | INJURED BOTH ARMS

Colt Nichols crashed in the whoops while leading the first 250 Heat race of the night at Anaheim. Sadly, it ended his chances of battling for the 250 West Coast title this season.

Colt Nichols posted via instagram: “It’s been a tough week, but I wanted to share a quick update with everyone. Unfortunately, my season was over before it started with my crash in the heat race last Saturday. I ended up breaking both arms and had surgery as well as a quick little skin graft to help with the burns on my back from when the bike landed on me. I should be heading home any day to begin the recovery process.
Life doesn’t always make sense, but we must get back up and keep going. Just like my championship post said last May — To Hell And Back — because I’ve overcome far too much to stop now. Appreciate all the messages and support more than you can imagine.”

Amateur A-class riders like Ryder Difrancesco (shown here) will be attending the Glendale Supercross this weekend to race in the Futures class at 5:30 PM. They won’t be racing during the Night Show, but they will be seen by many fans who are already in the stadium to watch qualifying.

The 2022 Glendale Supercross is the fifth round of the season for the 450SX and 250SX West classes, but it’s actually the third Round for the  Supercross Futures amateur series. This amateur Supercross series was implemented as a stepping stone for amateur riders to earn their 250 Supercross Pro license and this Saturday, Amateur A-class racers will be competing on the same track as the Pros. The Futures class will race at 5:30 PM on Saturday and the stadium is open for all ticket holders to come early and watch the amateur race after the Pros get done with timed qualifying.
