MXA WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: THE DANGERS OF UNIMPORTANT RACES

MXA_MissionLE_MPU_728x90

DOES IT HURT WORSE WHEN IT IS A MEANINGLESS RACE?

Adam Cianciarulo.

It’s not that the USGP is meaningless — just that it means very little to the American riders who are forced to race it. Given their druthers, it is unlikely that any AMA factory riders would bother. But since Monster Energy sponsors the race and sponsors several race teams, the Monster-paid riders have a clause in their contracts that state that they “will” race the USGP and the Monster Cup. However, there are three riders that wish that they hadn’t signed  for the 2017 USGP — even though there was little they could do about it.

Adam Cianciarulo. The first of the three was Adam Cianciarulo. The oft-injured Pro Circuit/Monster Energy/Kawasaki rider finally made it through an outdoor AMA series unscathed, only to hurt his knee in practice at the USGP. Adam has a history of getting hurt in races that are unimportant in the grand scheme of things (and also in races that are important for his career). Of all people to be on the line in a meaningless race, Adam should have been in the crowd watching.

Cooper Webb. Cooper Web never made it to Sunday’s starting line at the USGP.  The Monster Energy Yamaha rider hurt his thumb in practice and will be suffering with the recovery for the rest of the Summer and Fall. Webb had a horrendous season in the 450 class in his rookie voyage on the YZ450F. But, Jacksonville was where Webb was going to debut the 2018 Yamaha YZ450F. He had high hopes and so did Team Monster Yamaha. That didn’t happen in any meaningful way…and now he will lose valuable testing time on the new bike. And Webb needs all the time he can get on the new bike because he is considered to be a terrible test rider (and Yamaha  brought in non-team riders to help set the 2018 bike up for Webb).

Justin Barcia. Justin Barcia wanted to race the USGP. He has been vocal in saying how much he’d like to race the MXGP series at some point in his career. Justin saw the USGP as a chance to show his worth to the European team managers — after all, he had impressed them the three times he raced the MXDN. With his race results at their worst level of his career, Justin needed to go out and be the old “Bam Bam.” But it wasn’t his day. Justin went 13-15 at the USGP. He impressed no one. Now, the question is, with the Grand Prix option off the plate, what ride can Justin find for the 2018 season.

Cooper Webb.

American riders do not want to race the USGP—and for the most part their team managers do not want them to either. It is a meaningless race for the typical AMA Supercross or National star — they are not running for the Championship, they are interfering in an ongoing title chase, it doesn’t pay anything and it comes at the end of a 29-race AMA schedule. As a rule of thumb the riders who do agree to race are sponsored by Monster Energy, who is the sponsor of the USGP and puts the race in the rider’s yearly contracts. Even then, the riders find ways to get out of racing the USGP. They schedule surgery to fix old injury or they get hurt at the very last round of the AMA Nationals and decide to sit the GP out to heal up — most of these maladies are real, but some are injuries of convenience

The 450 class: This year only four factory-sponsored American 450 riders showed up in Jacksonville to race — Eli Tomac, Justin Barcia, Cooper Webb and Benny Bloss. In truth, there were 16 AMA riders on the 450 starting line, but 12 of those riders had not scored a single point in the 2017 AMA 450 National Championship (and unless you are from their home town, you wouldn’t recognize their names—save for veteran Kyle Chisholm, who has been racing in Canada as of late).

The 250 Class: In the 250 class at Jacksonville, the situation wasn’t much better, as 14 riders showed up. They were divided into three groups: (1) Two European-based American riders —  Thomas Covington and Darian Sanayei. (2) Nine AMA 250 riders who had scored points in the 2017 AMA 250 Nationals (Adam Cianciarulo, Mitch Harrison, R.J. Hampshire, Chase Sexton, Justin Hill, Justin Cooper, Brandon Scharer (Brandon had 450 points only), Austin Root and Bradley Lionnet. (3) Five riders who had zero AMA points in the 2017 season.

Justin Barcia’s last race for the JGR Suzuki team was at the USGP. He is now a free agent.

Now you might ask, why do riders who were unable to break the top 20 in any moto in the 2017 season, suddenly decide to race the USGP. The answer is simple—because they can. And once accepted they don’t have to go through any qualifying process—except for gate pick. Every rider who applies for an entry (and is accepted) is guaranteed a starting spot in the USGP. And the series promoter wants Americans on the line, so they are willing to accept any warm body who wants to enter in order to fill the starting gate. Youthstream partnered with MX Sports for the express reason of attracting more and better Americans to the 2017 USGP. They thought that MX Sports could use their AMA National influence to fill the starting line. In way, that did happen — in that riders who didn’t do anything in the AMA Nationals, jumped at the chance of guaranteed spot in the two main events. Amazingly, without the 16 Americans in the 450 class, there would have only been 20 riders behind the 40-man starting gate. And, in the 250 class, there would have been only 16 riders on the line without the Americans.

MXA has always been a big supporter of international competition and hosting a Grand Prix in the USA and, even though MXA doesn’t see eye to eye with Giuseppe Luongo’s business practices, when the USGP was held at Glen Helen, MXA’s Jody Weisel designed four year’s worth of USGP tracks for Glen Helen’s Bud Feldkamp. We wish that American riders and Americans teams would support the event. It is good for the sport as a whole, but racers have to do what’s best for them.

HOW MANY AMA RIDERS COULD WIN THE 250 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS?

R.J. Hampshire went 1-1 to win his first Pro race ever.

A lot was made of the Eli Tomac versus Jeffrey Herlings showdown at the Jacksonville USGP. All across Europe, Herlings’ win is being touted as proof positive that Europe has better motocross riders than the USA — even though Eli Tomac beat every other European rider on the starting line (and of the three GPs that Eli has raced in his career his moto scores are 1-1-1-1-1-3). It goes without saying that Jeffrey had a great two weeks in America with winning both the Crawfordsville National and the USGP. But, what no one in Europe seemed to notice from Jacksonville was that American 250 riders cleaned the clocks of the 250 Grand Prix riders.

Thomas Covington.

And it wasn’t the stars rider from the 2017 AMA 250 Nationals, but the working class heroes that did the deed. Zach Osborne, Jeremy Martin, Adam Cianciarulo, Aaron Plessinger, Joey Savatgy, Colt Nichols, Alex Martin, Austin Forkner and Shane McElrath were not there. The winner of the 250 USGP at Jacksonsville, R.J. Hampshire, had never won an AMA 250 National and had finished 11th in the 2017 season (having missed the first three races with injuries), Thomas Covington was third at the USGP (Covington has never raced a single AMA Pro race of any kind), Mitchell Harrison was fifth (Harrison was ninth in the AMA Nationals with one top three moto and three top five motos), Chase Sexton was sixth at the USGP (Sexton was an AMA rookie in 2017 and finished 12th in National points) and Justin Cooper ended up 14th, but finished eighth in the first moto and was running near the front in moto two when his bike broke. Overall the Americans were first (Hampshire), third (Covington), fifth (Harrison) and sixth (Sexton).

Justin Cooper’s bike broke in the second moto.

In the first 250 USGP moto, Americans were 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 13th (for five of the top ten spots). In the second moto they went 1st, 4th, 8th, 9th and 14th (which left them with four of the top ten spots, and it probably would have been five out of ten if Justin Cooper’s bike hadn’t quit). It is important to note that this was only Justin Cooper’s fourth Pro race ever (three AMA Nationals and one Grand Prix).

Chase Sexton.

Now think about the possibilities. This was a stacked European 250 field with the best they have on the line. It wasn’t the best that America had to offer. What would have happened if the nine missing Americans 250 stars had been in Jacksonville?

MXA PHOTO OF THE WEEK #1: WHO SAID ELI CAN’T GET A START?

Eli Tomac (3) holeshot the first 450 moto at the USGP. He set sail and won by 28 seconds.

MXA PHOTO OF THE WEEK #2: AFTER THE HOLESHOT COMES THE CHECKERED FLAG

Eli Tomac didn’t have the great end to his 2017 charge to the 450 Nationals. He didn’t win a race after July 8th and lost to Jeffrey Herlings at the final National round. So, this moto win at the USGP, even though he didn’t win the USGP, must have felt good. Photo: Massimo Zanzani

A BIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE: HIGHLAND 450

Originally a spin-off Swedish brand, the Highland 450 became an American-made offroad bike — that came in motocross, enduro and Supermoto versions. Highland built a factory in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to produce the bikes. Sadly, the Highland project came to an end when an airplane crash took the lives of three key figures from Highland Motorcycles. Founder Mats Malmberg, President Chase Bales and CFO Damian Riddoch were killed when their plane went down in July of 2010 coming back from business trip to Michigan..
