ASK THE MXPERTS: CAN YOU MAP MY 2016 YAMAHA YZ450F FOR ME?

YZ450FACTION2We think that we have maps that can make the 2016 YZ450F faster—maybe even this fast.

Dear MXA,
I read in the 2016 Yamaha YZ450F test that you guys had tested different maps and were working on finding a better map than the stock one. I must confess that I ran MXA’s map in my previous YZ450F and it was perfect. Now that I have a 2016 YZ450F I’m counting on you to tell me what to do. I have a friend with a GYTR Power Tuner, and even though he bought a KTM, he will let me use it. So, tell me the correct numbers and I will put them in my bike. I trust you guys.

The MXA wrecking crew runs two different maps.—one for the more restrictive stock pipe and one for freer flowing aftermarket pipes. Since you have access to the GYTR Power Tuner you will be able to start with these recommended maps and make minor changes for your riding style, altitude, temperature and wants. MXA’s settings are good starting points.

2017yz450fstockmap2016 YZ450F  MAP FOR THE STOCK PIPE: This is the map that we are currently running in our 2016 Yamaha YZ450F. As you can see, we added a little more fuel when the throttle is fully open. Every number on the Fuel Map is worth 3% more fuel, so our +1 is 3% richer than stock. On the ignition side we advanced the ignition considerably. Each number on the Ignition Map is equal to 1 degree. The plus numbers (+) are advanced and minus numbers (-) are retarded, but as you can see, we advanced the ignition at every throttle setting and every rpm. We worked on these maps with Yamaha test rider Travis Preston and took the time to go back and forth between the stock mapping and these maps—once we were sure that our new map was perfect for us, we left it in the bike.

2016yz450fmappipe2016 YZ450F  MAP FOR AN AFTERMARKET PIPE: This is the map that we are currently running in our 2016 Yamaha YZ450F when we are running an aftermarket exhaust system. As you can see, we didn’t add any fuel at any point on the throttle settings—and, in fact, leaned the fuel at the smallest throttle opening to help pickup and again at wide open throttle. Every number on the Fuel Map is worth 3% more or less fuel, so our -2  at 1/8th throttle at high rpm is 6% leaner (and we are 3% leaner higher up in the throttle position also). On the ignition side we still advanced the ignition timing, but a little less aggressively than with the stock pipe—largely because we didn’t add fuel to the mixture. Each number on the Ignition Map is equal to 1 degree of advance or retardation. The plus numbers (+) are advanced and minus numbers (-) are retarded, but as you can see, we advanced the ignition at three of the six throttle and rpm settings (and much less than with the stock pipe—where we advanced it in all six boxes). We worked on these maps with Yamaha test rider and DR.D owner Doug Dubach.
