How does Team USA get its bikes to the Motocross des Nations? Do they ship them by boat? Do they roll them into the cargo hold of an airliner?
They crate them up in wooden crates, two bikes to a crate, two weeks before the MXDN and airfreight them to whatever base of operation they plan to work out of—normally their brand’s local distributor. It cost between $6000 to $8000 one-way by plane. That makes the price tag around $15,000 for a round-trip. They fill the crates up with parts, spare engines, gear and tools they will need for the race. Obviously, at last year’s Red Bud MXDN, they just drove their semis there. In fact, many teams left their trucks back east after the final AMA National in Indiana and then flew everybody in. Unfortunately, this year’s MXDN is in Holland.
