ASK THE MXPERTS: WHERE CAN I GET A CONE PIPE FOR MY CRF450 FOUR-STROKE?

A four-stroke cone pipe is an expensive way to look different.

OURS IS NOT TO REASON WHY

Dear MXA,

I have a brilliant idea. Since every custom two-stroke builder in the world uses Scalvini cone pipes on its project bikes, couldn’t some enterprising exhaust pipe company make a killing by making exotic four-stroke cone pipes? Cool idea for my CRF450. All I want is a royalty off each one sold.

Sorry, Charlie, but you are five years too late. The same Scalvini that has risen to fame making two-stroke cone pipes has already made a special run of four-stroke cone pipes. MXA tested the Scalvini cone pipe on our 2014 Honda CRF450. It consists of 40 hand-welded titanium cones and starts as a single pipe before splitting almost immediately into two separate pipes (one down the left and one down the right side of the bike a la the 2018–2019 Honda CRF250). It worked best at high rpm, beating the stock CRF450 pipe by almost 3 horsepower at peak. It did, however, give up power from low to mid. It was only available by special order and was not a sales success. It was dropped from the Scalvini line of products. If you need more information or want to pick up your royalty check, call Scalvini at (760) 949-0941.
