THE BIKE THAT FEETS MADE FAMOUS

STRAIGHT RHYTHM: BUILT FOR BUBBA, BUT OTHERWISE MEANINGLESS

This year’s Red Bull Straight Rhythm race will be held under the lights at the Fairplex in Pomona, California, on October 22.

The “we race too much” anthem loses a lot of its meaning when the same riders line up for every post-season event that pays big bucks (and European Supercross that pays start money). Suddenly the risk of injury isn’t so large, they aren’t too tired and the season is not too long. Historically 29 races is not as long as it was back in the 1970s when the riders raced the six Inter-AMs, seven Supercrosses, seven 250 Nationals, followed by the seven 500 Nationals and then the 10-race Trans-AMA series (plus the USGP at Carlsbad)—and every moto back in those days was 40-minutes-plus-two-laps, not 30-minutes-plus-two. That adds up to 39 races. Total moto time in the 1970s was 2400 minutes of racing a year (30 outdoor races times 80 minutes per race). Today, a rider spends 720 minutes racing the outdoor Nationals (12 outdoor races times 60 minutes per race).

So, when the riders line up for the SMX Cup (October 8), Monster Cup (October 15), Straight Rhythm (October 22), Paris Supercross (Nov. 12-13) and the Aus-X in Sydney (Nov. 12-13), just remember the 39 races a year that Rex Staten, Tony D, Jimmy Weinert and Kent Howerton did without making up excuses about needing a rest.

THE WAY WE WERE: THE CROWDS, THE GRASS & THE IRONMEN

Andy Jefferson was a successful AMA Pro racer, on a Husqvarna, so its no surprise that he worked at Husky as their offroad team manager before moving into the press relations role. Dennis Stapleton is shooting a photo of Andy as he flies by.

Many people think that the giant motorcycle corporations are made up of accountants and managers in blue suits, but nothing could be further from the truth. The vast majority of employees at Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, KTM, Husqvarna, TM and SWM got their jobs because they loved to ride. We can’t speak for who wears suits and who doesn’t at every corporation, but here are some quick pics of the men that MXA deals with on a daily basis. Every one of them is a talented racer.

Tim Olson was an MXA test rider for years before leaving to work for Yamaha and now Suzuki.

Tom Moen was a factory race mechanic at KTM before taking over babysitting the press and keeping KTM’s fleet of test bikes running.

Ralf Schmidt is a jack of all trades at TM USA, and when he isn’t working on the bikes he’s racing every weekend.

Pete Vetrano has imported four different European brands to the USA, and is getting ready to bring SWM Motorcycles to the USA this spring.

Irishman David O’Connor came to the USA on a moto holiday and stayed to work for Team Kawasaki Offroad before moving to KTM as Tom Moen’s right-hand man.

Steve Butler was an Australian racer who ended up wrenching for Jeff Emig at Team Yamaha, eventually becoming the Yamaha team manager before moving to the Yamaha test department.

Travis Preston works as Yamaha’s inhouse test rider and does double duty in the press relations department. Travis was the 2002 AMA 250 West Supercross Champion and  2013-2014 World Vet Champion.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT! THIEVES STEAL MXA’S SWITCH HAULER BY FOLLOWING UPS TRUCK IN NORCO, CALIFORNIA

Thieves followed the UPS truck when it delivered the latest version of the Switch Hauler to Norco, California, on Wednesday afternoon. We would never have known they had taken it, but they called Switch Hauler with some made-up story about wanting to buy this version and needed to know how much it cost. Since, this was the first edition of a new prototype, the guys at Switch Hauler got suspicious. They called UPS and tracked the package only to find out that it had been delivered to the Norco address—and left on the porch. But it wasn’t there immediately after the UPS truck left.
