Former 80cc, 125cc, 250cc, 500cc and Supercross Champion Jeff Ward Finished fourth at the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday. Ward, who started sixth in the 500 mile race, moved into third at the halfway point and was never out of the top five for the rest of the day. At several points during the later half of the race, Jeff was in second place, behind eventual winner Juan Montoya. With ten laps to go, while running third, Jeff was blocked momentarily by a lapped car and lost his drive down the front straight. As a result, he was passed by A.J. Foyt teammate, Eliseo Salazar, and ended the day in fourth.
ÿWard finished second in last years Indy 500 (only 6.562 seconds behind the winner), 13th in 1998 and third in 1997. He was named the 1997 Indy 500 Rookie of the Year.
ÿThe Indianapolis 500 is the world’s largest single-day sporting event. The rain delayed race received network TV coverage from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Jeff’s fourth place at Indy will earn him over a quarter-million dollars. In his four years at Indy, Jeff Ward has won over two million dollars in purse money and awards.
ÿJeff drove an Oldsmobile powered G-Force sponsored by Harrah’s and prepared by A.J. Foyt. As the only motocross racer to win every AMA National Championship, Jeff still maintains a strong motorcycle connection and his Indy effort was sponsored by Motocross Action, Troy Lee Designs and Kawasaki.
