JEFFREY HERLINGS WINS 250 MOTOCROSS GRAND PRIX OF THE NETHERLANDS: TONY CAIROLI WINS 450 CLASS

Valkenswaard is a track that favors the sand specialist…or the brave. Clement Desalle (25) was caught napping by Ken de Dycker (9) and Rui Goncalves (999).

Dutch rider Jeffrey Herlings dominated the 250 Grand Prix of Netherlands by winning both motos by large margins. The 16-year-old Herlings left second place Ken Roczen and third place Tommy Searle in his wake.

Herlings holeshot the first moto with Ken Roczen quickly moving up to second. The chasers included the cream of the 250 class crop with Nicolas Aubin, Gautier Paulin, Max Anstie, Arnaud Tonus, Tommy Searle and Zach Osborne in futile pursuit. Roczen was the only rider who could match Herlings pace, but Roczen went over a berm and Herlings was gone for good (winning by 30 seconds over his KTM teammate).

In the second 250 moto Herlings proved who the boss was in Holland and passed Ken Roczen on lap one?only to crash and allow Roczen and Harri Kullas to get by. No sweat, Herlings motored on by both riders within two laps. Tommy Searle eventually moved up to third with Paulin and Tonus behind him. Searle and Tonus dueled, but Searle got the last step on the podium.

Herlings won the Dutch GP in front of Roczen and Searle, but Roczen still leads the 250 Championship by eight points over Herlings and 11 points on Searle. KTM team boss Stefan Everts said he was “super satisfied” with the 250 results. “Coming into this GP we expected a great result today. This time there was a lot of pressure on Jeffrey because he won here last year and he showed something really great today, especially when he came off the bike and got on and back in the race so quickly. Now we are one and two in the championship and in the next GPs we will see more fights between Ken and Jeffrey.

MEANWHILE IN THE 450 CLASS

Meanwhile, in the 450 class, Tony Cairoli used a 1-2 to beat KTM teammate Max Nagl and fellow countryman David Philippaerts.

Russian Evgeny Bobryshev got to style for awhile out front in moto one, but Steven Frossard, Max Nagl, David Philippaerts and Antonio Cairoli soon steamed on by. At the midway point the two KTM 350SXF riders (Nagl and Cairoli) caught the French Yamaha rider (Frossard). Cairoli made the move into the lead, while Nagl failed to seal the deal on the French rider.

In the second 450 moto Rui Goncalves ran up front. It was former 450 World Champion David Philippaerts who challenged Honda rider Goncalves first. Philly made the pass and was soon joined up front by Max Nagl and Steven Frossard. Nagl passed Frosaard for the lead as Cairoli pulled into fourth place. What followed was a battle for the podium (as Nagl pulled away to a safe lead). Cairoli got Frossard for third position and then he passed Philippaerts for second. At the flag it was Nagl, Cairoli and Philippaerts. The victory went to Tony Cairoli with a 1-2 over Nagl’s 3-1.

Steven Frossard still leads the 450 title chase by six points over Clement Desalle and 15 points over Max Nagl. Cairoli is 19 points back.
