TWO-STROKE SPOTLIGHT: ERIK EBERSOLE’S 1975 KAWASAKI KX400

IMG_3299[1]Erik Ebersole with his prized 1975 Kawasaki KX400.

There has been quite the disparity between two-stroke submissions as of late, with guys either showing off their almost-new smokers or decades old machines. Any two-stroke is worthy of this space, but it takes a certain bike to capture my attention. Erik Ebersole’s Brad Lackey KX400 copy did just that. Having spoken with Lackey before, I like the brash former 500 World Champion from Northern California. Apparently Ebersole does, too. Or maybe he just liked how Lackey’s KX400 works bike looked. Regardless, Erik hit it out of the park with this build. Below is Erik’s explanation for the classic iron.

IMG_3228[1]“Please take a look at my 1975 Kawasaki KX400 Brad Lackey inspired bike. I race both modern and vintage bikes. I have a few vintage bikes and have been invited to display them at the Legends and Heroes setup at the Atlanta Supercross for a few years now. I race KX400s and have a 1975 with a green tank. I had enough parts to build another, so I decided to go after the Brad Lackey look.

IMG_3232[1]“I have always liked the black look, and I built the bike myself. It was displayed at the 2016 Atlanta Supercross, along with a few of my other bikes. I will race it in some vintage races later this year. Details are below:

Frame was modified to accept a steel Husqvarna tank.
Seat mounts were moved forward to adjust the seat gap.
The motor was assembled using many NOS parts. A Wiseco piston was installed into a Millennium Technologies plated cylinder.
Plastic was bought from Knightmare Racing.
Forks have Race Tech springs.
Rear shocks are from Ohlins.
Rear swingarm is handmade by KLP Racing.
Rear sprocket is custom cut by Rebel Gear.
One-off billet custom triple clamps were made by Techsmith.
Rims and spokes by Buchanan.
Seat cover, with gripper seat material, was handmade in Thailand.
Levers and perches by Works Connection.
Throttle assembly and cable by Terry Cable.
New 36mm Mikuni round slide carb from Carb Parts.

MXA TESTED // 2022 KAWASAKI KX450SR

ROUND 1 QUICK FACTS // HONDA CELEBRATED 50TH BIRTHDAY // By Ben Bridges

The factory Honda team swept the 250 and 450 class for 1st and 2nd place at Fox Raceway.

450 MX CLASS RECAP
Ricky Johnson
With Honda Hall of Famers Rick Johnson (pictured) and Jeremy McGrath doing color commentary, team Honda gave them plenty to talk about.
  • Chase Sexton goes 1-1 for the overall win.
  • It was Sexton’s 3rd career 450 MX win, 1st time ever he swept both motos.

Chase sexton 2022 Fox Raceway National-8396-2Chase Sexton rode great at the first MX round.

  • On the gate for the 450 MX were 3 former 450 MX champions and a former 9-time world GP champion.  What a way to kickoff the 50th anniversary of MX.
  • Honda is trying to win its 1st 450 MX title since ’04 when Ricky Carmicheal did it.

Ricky Carmichael crf450 2004Ricky Carmichael was the last Honda rider to bring them a 450 National crown in 2004.

  • Ken Roczen goes 2-2 for 2nd overall.  It was his 45th career podium.  The former champion led both motos, but would succumb to Sexton’s speed.
  • Thanks to Jett Lawrence’s win in the 250 MX, Honda now has 5 Round 1 sweeps.
  • The winner of Round 1 in the 450 MX class has gone on to win the title 25 times.
  • Surprising Yamaha rider Christian Craig goes 3-3 for 3rd overall for his 1st ever 450 podium.

Craig got his first ever 450 podium finish.

  • Former champion, Eli Tomac, goes 7-4 for 4th overall.
  • Ryan Dungey goes 5-5 for 5th overall.  The former champion was outstanding after a 5-year layoff.

What a race for the former champ Ryan Dungey going 5-5 for fifth overall.

  • One of the fastest racers all weekend, Jason Anderson, went 4-8 for 6th overall.
  • Antonio Cairoli went 10-6 for 7th overall.
  • Motocross Actions’ Josh Mosiman goes 28-30 for 30th overall.

MXA’s Josh Mosiman went 28-30 for 30th overall.

250 MX CLASS RECAP // LAWRENCE BROS HELP HONDA CELEBRATE
The mechanics got to celebrate for the Honda win as well.
  • Jett Lawrence helped Honda celebrate their 50th Anniversary by going 1-1 for the overall, his 6th career MX win.
  • Jett Lawrence becomes the 1st foreign rider to win back-to-back Round 1’s, if you count Dylan Ferrandis’ win in 2020, it’s been 3 years since the USA has been shutout from winning Round 1.
  • Hunter Lawrence goes 2-2 for 2nd overall, just like in the 450 class.  Honda goes 1-2 in both classes.

With the Lawrence brother s and Shimoda on the podium at the first round meant there were no American races in the top three.

  • Carrying the Pro Circuit flag, Jo Shimoda, from Japan, went 4-3 for 3rd overall, keeping Americans off the podium at Round 1.
  • R.J. Hampshire goes 3-9 for 4th.
  • Honda has now won at least 1 250 MX race in 35 seasons.
  • The last Honda rider to win back-to-back 250 championships was Steve Lamson in ’95 and ’96 on a 125 Honda.  Can Jett Lawrence join Lamson?

Steve Lamson was the last Honda rider to win back to back championships. Will Jett be able to do the same?

  • Alpinestar gear had a big weekend, taking 3 spots on the podium. Sexton in the 450 MX and the Lawrence Brothers in the 250 MX.
