THE LIST OF LEGAL AMA PRO MACHINERY: KTM PAID TO MAKE THE 2013 250SX TWO-STROKE LEGAL

Don’t read too much into KTM’s homologation of the 2013 250SX two-stroke. They did it mainly to show solidarity with two-stroke owners. They have no intention of entering a 250 two-stroke in the 450 class. Now, if the AMA would make the displacement rules equal, they might consider it for the 250 class.

WAITING FOR THEIR RETURN: WHO WILL MISS THE NATIONAL OPENER?

Wil Hahn broke his hand in his Las Vegas practice crash. He managed to make it through the night in Vegas, but had surgery on Wednesday.

Kyle Chisholm is nursing a medical dictionary list of injuries.

Matt Goerke hopes to be back later in the season.

Christian Craig made it all the way to one week before the Nationals, but he broke his navicular last week.

Davi Millsaps rode through the Supercross season with a knee injury, but will miss all the Nationals after surgery.

GOOD THINGS FROM THE COLLAPSE OF THE JDR KTM TEAM

Joey Savatgy rebounded to a new KTM team.

With JDR/JStar/KTM gone the way of the dodo bird, you would think it would be devastation time for their riders. Guess again! Joey Savatgy rebounded almost immediately with the formation of a special FMF/ Orange Brigade team that was put in place with Savatgy in mind. Meanwhile, when Troy Lee Design’s rider Christian Craig broke his navicular this week, Malcolm Stewart got the chance to put JDR’s demise behind him and fill in for Craig in the 450 Nationals on a TLD Honda. What’s the Troy Lee/Stewart connection? Troy Lee Designs manufacturers James Stewart’s Seven gear (which won’t be available until fall).

NEWS FROM THE FRONT…MAYBE MIDPACK ALSO

Giuseppe Luongo.

Luongo drivel: Last week in Portugal, Giuseppe Luongo pontificated on how he thinks the GPs should be in the future. It should be noted that Luongo doesn’t know what he wants?this is his fifth or sixth new idea for how GP motocross should be run this year. He throws mud at the wall in hopes that it will look like a Picasso. Here are this week’s crackpot ideas. (1) No more 450cc bikes?he thinks 400cc would be better (maybe with 300cc two-strokes). (2) No Super Finals for European GPs in 2014, but still for overseas races. (3) Potential GPs in Australia, India and Japan in 2014. (4) He would like to have one short moto that pays less points and a longer second moto that pays more points. Really, we don’t make this stuff up!

Adam Cianciarulo.

Adam Cianciarulo: To no one’s surprise, amateur sensation Adam Cianciarulo will turn pro at Hangtown in one week. This means that Cianciarulo will forego racing at Loretta Lynn later this summer. There was some discussion between Pro Circuit and the Cianciarulo family about whether Adam should stay in the Amateurs and then turn pro after Loretta Lynn or go pro now. The family wanted to go pro immediately.

Week off: The only major race this weekend is a WORCS event in Honolulu Hills. Next week the flood gates open with the Hangtown 250/450 National, Brazilian 250/450 Grand Prix, World Sidecar Championship round in the Ukraine and round four of the Australian Championships in Broadford, Victoria.

Michael Leib.

Michael Leib: Rockstar Beursfoon Suzuki team has announced that Michael Leib will be heading back to Europe to compete in the remainder of the 250 Grand Prix races. Leib has raced more in Europe than in America since moving out of the amateur ranks. In fact, Leib has never scored a single AMA 250 National point, but has had a few good rides in the 250 West Supercross series.

Steve Sword: Long-time Grand Prix racer Steven Sword has called it quits and will take a job as head coach at the Honda Off Road Centre in England. Steven said, “In an ideal world, I would have liked to finish this season but right now something has to give and I think now is the right time to switch focus and devote 100% of my time and effort to this new project and wind down my racing career.”

Matiss Karro.

Matiss Karro: After a crash in Portugal last week, X-rays revealed that Matiss suffered a broken wrist. The break was next to the screws from his last break. He will only miss a month of action.

COULD THIS BE THE NEXT KTM? NOPE! THIS IS THE BAJAJ RE60 QUADRICYLE

The Bajaj RE60 is being introduced as an alternative to the three-wheeled rickshaw in Indian. In a move, much like the change from three-wheeled ATVs to Quads in the sport market, Baja hopes to get government approval to build the water-cooled,  fuel injected, three spark plugs, four valves, five-speed, 216 cc, single-cylinder, metal-polymer, monocoque machine. The RE60 weighs 800 pounds, has a turning radius of 10 feet and can reach a top speed of 45 mph. It can carry the driver and three passengers and run gets 82 miles per gallon.

Bajaj owns 47 percent of KTM and sold 3.8 million motorcycles last year and is the leading producer of auto rickshaws. Bajaj’s Indian car company competitors wants the RE60 regulated as a car instead of as an auto rickshaw.

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THE MAICO 500?

Iconic motocross manufacturer Maico marketed a line of small cars from 1956 to 1958 (which they inherited when the bought the defunct Champion car company). The Maico 500 was powered by a 452cc, twin-cylinder, 18-horsepower, water-cooled, two-stroke made by Heinkel. The two-door car could hold four people, but it was by no means roomy. Warranty issues doomed the car and production was stopped in 1958. Maico went out of the automobile business in 1958, but continued to manufacture motorcycles through 1986

WHAT ABOUT THE THE BSA SCOUT?

BSA actually starting making cars in 1907, but stopped and started several times (1914, 1921 and 1932). The last BSA car was produced in 1940. Their best known car was the BSA Scout. The Scouts came as two-seat sports cars, four-seat tourers and two-seat coupes. It was a front-wheel drive car, manufactured and sold by a subsidiary of the Birmingham Small Arms Company. It was launched in 1935 with a three-speed tranny, four-cylinder, 1075cc engine (out of the previous BSA three-wheeled car). It had a rakish looking body with cut-away doors, luggage space in the tonneau, motorcycle fenders and a single-piece windshield.

ASK THE MXPERTS: IS YAMAHA GOING TO CONTINUE MAKING TWO-STROKES

The 2013 YZ250.

Dear MXA,
I’m a loyal two-stroke fan, but all of my friends say that Yamaha will drop the YZ125 and YZ250 for 2014. The YZ250 is my favorite bike. Is that true?

Yamaha does not plan to reveal any of its 2014 model info until their dealer meeting on June 11. However, we are 100% positive that Yamaha will continue to make the YZ125 and YZ250 because it has been a successful part of their marketing plan and adds offroad sales in a down time (with very little investment).
