TEASER LOOK AT AN UPCOMING MXA TEST: WE RIDE JUSTIN BARCIA’S GEICO HONDA

LOOKING FOR THE WORLD’S MOST EXOTIC PRODUCTION-BASED 125 TWO-STROKE? IT IS THE TM 125MX

The Italian-built TM 125MX uses a 38mm Keihin PWK carb to fuel its 54mm x 54mm bore and stroke reed-valved engine.

What’s new on the 2013 TM 125MX two-stroke? Engine changes for 2013 include a new piston design, new V-Force reed valve position on the crankcases, new main bearings (supporting the billet machined crankshaft), modified the cylinder and head, new CDI programming, updated jetting, new intake system, redesigned filter cage, high-flow air boot, new HGS exhaust, beefier swingarm and new graphics.

The five-speed engine has two maps built into the Kokusan CDI black box.

TM’s come with in-house ‘Factory’ rear shocks, 48mm Kayaba forks, billet hubs, Excel rims, Billet triple clamps, rubber-mounted bars, oversize ‘wave’ 270mm front rotors, Nissin calipers, billet machined connecting rods and a switchable twin map ignition systems.          USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: UFO PLASTIC YZ125/YZ250 RESTYLE KIT

The UFO plastic kit includes all the plastic parts you need to make your ancient YZ125/250 look like the current Yamaha line.

The UFO Plastic YZ125/YZ250 restyle kit is a complete makeover in a box. It turns the outmoded Yamaha two-stroke from frumpy and inelegant to modern and sleek. The $229.95 kit includes radiator shrouds, side panels, front number plate, rear fender and front fender (all designed and drilled to fit on the two-stroke’s chassis). The UFO pieces are based on the current YZ250F plastic.

VERDICT: With the exception of the need to transfer the aluminum collars from the stock YZ125/YZ250 plastic to the UFO parts, every piece of the UFO Restyle kit bolted on with ease. Not only did every part line up perfectly, but the quality was superb. We ordered a graphics kit from Decal Works that fits perfectly on the UFO parts and were amazed in the transformation of the overall look of the bike. $229.95?www.ufoplasticusa.com or (815) 756-9400.

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: DIRT TRICKS IRONMAN STEEL SPROCKET

The Ironman steel sprocket is 14 ounces lighter than a typical steel rear sprocket.

The Ironman is a minimalist steel sprocket that weighs less than competing steel sprockets, but still offers the benefits of steel over aluminum. Our 53-tooth Dirt Tricks sprocket weighed 22 ounces (one pound, six ounces). That is 14 ounces lighter than normal steel sprocket, three ounces lighter than a hybrid sprocket and nine ounces heavier than a Renthal aluminum sprocket.

VERDICT: It is a basic fact that a steel chain, lubricated with dirt, will grind an aluminum sprocket down (even if it is hard-coated). Not so with the Dirt Tricks Ironman sprocket. It is  three times stronger than 7075 aluminum and is heat-treated to the hardness of a Snap-On wrench. $109.00 (rear sprocket), $37.00 (countershaft sprocket)?www.dirttricks.com or (775) 267-6361.

The 125 two-stroke will be gone in 2013 and the 12-year-old stars of the Red Bull Rookies Cup will switch to Moto3 four-strokes.

Even the KTM Rookies Cup, which has raced on KTM 125cc two-stroke road racers since 2007, will now switch to 250cc four-strokes for 2013.
