WHAT IS IT? The VX-R70 helmet is Scorpion’s top-of-the-line helmet. Even though it has an under-$300 price tag, it still has some cool features not seen on more expensive helmets.

WHAT’S IT COST? $269.95.

WHAT STANDS OUT? Here’s a list of things that stand out with the Scorpion VX-R70.

(1) Construction. The Scorpion VX-R70 helmet uses a composite shell that incorporates Scorpion’s thermodynamic composite technology. This technology consists of a proprietary five-layer blend of interlaced and specially formulated fiberglass, aramid and organic poly-resin fibers. The VX-R70 also has dual-density EPS foam that provides efficient energy displacement in key areas. The Scorpion VX-R70 meets both ECE 22.05 and DOT certification standards.

(2) Inner liner. The inner liner and cheek pads are removable and machine washable. The liner is secured in multiple spots, making it almost impossible to dislodge when riding. In fact, it took some time to reinstall the liner and pads once removed. The anti-microbial fabric was a hit with the MXA test riders, as it was soft and smooth against their faces, making for a comfortable fit.

(3) Visor. When Scorpion told the MXA wrecking crew that their visor was shatter-resistant, we took it as a challenge. The first thing the MXA test riders did was bend and twist the visor in a knot. True to Scorpion’s word, we could bend it but we couldn’t break it. We loved this visor.

(4) Fit. For an under-$300 helmet, the fit was very comfortable. There were no pressure points, and getting in and out of the helmet was as easy as pulling the straps apart. Just make sure to deflate the cheek air bags before taking the helmet off. That is right, the VX-R70 has 5-inch-long air bags on each side. This allowed test riders to customize the firmness of the fit. The pump is located under the nosepiece (shown above), and there is an air-release button directly next to it for easy use. We liked this feature and thought it would be even better if there were an air bladder in the top of the helmet to cushion the rider’s head.

(5) Options. The Scorpion VX-R70 comes in 12 graphic designs and in sizes from extra-small to extra-extra large.

WHAT’S THE SQUAWK? Two quibbles: (1) We would like the installation of the cheek pads to be a bit easier. (2) We liked the air pump but had to wonder about its long-term durability. Considering its low price point, unbreakable visor, air-pump system in the cheek pads for a customized fit, and sleek design, we can’t think of a reason why you shouldn’t buy this helmet.
