THE WAY WE WERE BACK IN THE DAY

hallmncatIf you raced in the 1970s this is how you aspired to look. Hallman goat skin pants, open face helmet, Jofa dangling and a Hallman GP chest protector were the cool things to have. This young man did quite well for himself, but by 1977 this look was gone from the sport—replaced by nylon pants, plastic chest protectors and full-face helmets.

1985fourstrokeThis was the starting line at the World Four-Stroke Championships at Carlsbad 30 years ago.  That is Johnny O’Mara on the far right on a Honda. A close look at the line reveals one Honda, One Husqvarna and one Yamaha—the rest of the field is mounted on blue-framed ATK 604s. Even O’Mara’s bike was a one-off ATK copy.

procircuitadRiders new to the sport forget that before Pro Circuit was a powerhouse Honda and Kawasaki team, they had one of the best Husqvarna teams in the 1980s. Look at the list of riders in this Pro Circuit ad.

Back in the day, all the factory and privateer Pros raced the CMC Golden State Series. It paid well, stayed in California and was considered as the ultimate winter series. Plus, the prizes were good. Danny Magoo Chandler (125 Pro), Troy Blake (85cc), Frank Ciolkosz (Junior) and Alan Olson (Vet) all took home 12-foot Pro-Trac trailers.

There weren’t 100 different goggles brands back in the 1970s. Well, there were, but most racer chose to wear Carrera goggles. These minimalist goggles had a skinny strap, a nose piece that was separate from the top part of the frame and offered absolutely no dust protection. Oh yeah, long hair was also the fashion back in the 1970s.

Harley-Davidson wasn’t the only brand to try to use front forks as rear shocks. This two-time World Champion raced a Bultaco with four forks and no shocks in the GPs. Can you name him? Answer at the bottom of the page.

HOW THE THE R&D GENIUS THROTTLE BODY WORKS

_1123719Throttle closed.

_1123725Throttle half open.

_1123731Throttle wide open.

R&D’s stroke of genius was to invent a rotating barrel design. Instead of a flat slide or a butterfly valve, R&D designed an elliptical barrel that rotates inside the throttle body’s venturi. The elliptical barrel rotates completely out of the way at full throttle, and because of its smooth shape, the air flows over it with less disturbance. Why replace the common butterfly valve? No matter whether the throttle is open or closed, a butterfly always creates turbulence that lessens fuel velocity. Why do manufacturers uses butterfly valves? Butterfly valves aren’t aerodynamic, but they are cheaper to make.

The R&D Genius throttle body is designed to improve low-end power, partially open throttle response and pickup through the midrange. The smooth-flowing characteristics of the Genius design have the biggest effect when engine vacuum is low and fuel misting is compromised. Once the throttle body is wide open, the Genius’ barrel is completely out of sight. It smooths out any irregularities, boosts horsepower and make the bikes equipped with it easier to ride. It was a clear-cut improvement in the brain-to-throttle equation, which is probably why the Geico Honda and Doug Dubach used it. In fact, several factory road racing teams are using rotating barrel throttle bodies on their race bikes—including the MotoGP Champions. If you don’t sell a rotating barrel throttle body, you aren’t violating R&D’s patent—thus, factory race team can race with it.

This isn’t a cheap mod. It involves a complex, CNC-machined piece and a new electronic ECU (supplied). It is a serious racing product that improves throttle response and power, but since it isn’t visible to the naked eye, it’s not for the status conscious guy. It is designed to take a hopped-up engine to the nth degree. It retails for $1500 and you can learn more at www.r1dean.com.

A BIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE: VM RACING 610F

The Czech-made VM 610F came from VM Motors, a company that specializes in kart engines. It does borrow a few cast parts from other European brands, but the frame and engine are home grown.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT! ACERBIS X-MOVE BOOTS

2409954310The Acerbis X-Move CE-certified boot is off their top shelf and is designed in Italy. They come with the popular Vibram high-performance rubber soles, as well as all the other bells and whistles.

The X-Move boot brings together a mix of old school meets new school. It is a collaboration between two eras. The build of this boot reminds us of the old Sidi Crossfire boots (the ones where the plastic shell on the back of the leg detached from the leather, allowing you to fold it back to get your foot in with ease). The X-Move boot has the same type of design. The boot features a reinforced steel toe box, leather upper, vulcanized rubber gaiter, four aluminum buckles and a leather heat-resistant panel on the upper sections of the boot.2409954310aFeel. This boot needs zero break-in time. It is comfortable from the moment you put them on. The leather and plastic are quite pliable unlike most top-of-the-line boots. When wearing the X-Move 2.0 boots, it felt like you were wearing sneakers rather than boots. They were super comfortable and on the roomy side. Once the boot was broken in, the sole started to have some flex. It wasn’t a bad thing once we got used to it (and stayed away from Supercross tracks).2409950001a

Performance. The X-Move boot is on the soft side. It reminded our older test riders of old school leather Hi-Point boots. Obviously they have added protection, but the feel was similar. The Acerbis X-Move 2.0 boots are great for the average rider who likes to stay on the ground. Not the best choice for Pro riders who hit big jumps. They wanted more ankle support. This is one of the most comfortable boots on the market for the average offroad rider.

DIGITS:  $299.00— www.acerbisusa.com or your local dealer.

MXA RATING: This is a great boot at a fair price for a rider whose top priority for comfort and feel. It is a plastic boot for riders who really want a leather boot. If your priority is stiffness, move along.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: ONE SHOT DEAL! SPECIAL RUN OF 1986 HONDA CR250 TWO-STROKE PIPES

This is a cool idea. Pro Circuit plans to built a special limited-edition run of 1986 Honda CR250 Works Pipe and 304 silencers for bike builder and vintage racers. Just like back in the day, Pro Circuit’s Works Pipe increases horsepower and torque, while the unplated, oiled metal finish gives your bike that “works look.” Completing the special throwback kit is a 304 Factory Sound Silencer that has a slightly longer body to add top-end performance while reducing noise output. The brushed aluminum silencer body and stainless steel inlet tube and end-cap make the 1986 CR250 silencer look as good as it performs. It brings back memories of Ricky Johnson in his Team Honda days.

Pro Circuit is accepting orders for the $425.00 1986 Honda CR250 kit now and fulfill them when they reach the required production number. Order now if you want to be included in this special offer. For more info go to www.procircuit.com
