DO YOU REMEMBER THE MOVIE: “DEVILS ON A HOT FIRE CHAIRS”

No, well how about under it’s English name instead of the German one – “On Any Sunday.”

RECALL: 2021 KTM SX-E 5 PEE-WEE MODELS FOR BATTERY VENT CHECK

Battery powered SX-5 KTM 2021 Supercross_Houston 1_KTM Juniors-9408KTM recalls KTM  models of model year 2021 to the workshops of authorized KTM dealers in order to check the battery vent valve due to deviations in the production process.

Press Release: In the production process of the battery vent valve, nonconformities may have occurred. The vent valve may be missing on some vehicles, which may lead to unsafe battery conditions, e.g. after water intrusion. For this reason, a check if the vent valve is installed has to be performed on all affected vehicles. Customers to whom the affected motorcycles have already been delivered are being personally informed by letter and are asked to immediately contact an authorized KTM dealer to arrange an appointment. In addition, customers can check online in the “Service” area on the KTM website if their motorcycle is affected by the recall. The check of the bleeder valve takes approximately 10 minutes and the retrofit of the bleeder valve, if necessary, takes around 25 minutes. The check and retrofit can be carried out by authorized KTM dealers only. This check and possible retrofit of the bleeder valve is a free-of-charge service for customers performed under warranty.

• RECALL: 2021 KTM, HUSQVARNA & GASGAS MOTOCROSS BIKES FOR CHAIN INSPECTION

Owners of 2021 KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas motorcycles may have defective chains on their new bikes. To find out if your bike is affected, KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas owners should check on the “Service” area of their respective brand’s website. Once in the “Service” area, you enter your bike’s VIN number to see if your bike is included in the recall. If your VIN number is not affected, then no other action is required, but if your VIN is on the list of suspect chains, you will be required to go to your local KTM, Husqvarna or GasGas dealer to arrange to have a new chain installed. The replacement of the chain takes approximately 20 minutes. The replacement of the chain can be carried out by authorized GASGAS dealers only. This replacement of the chain is a free-of-charge service for customers performed under warranty.

HAVE YOU SEEN THE MARCH 2021 ISSUE OF MXA YET? IT’S FULL OF BIKE TESTS & MORE BIKE TESTS

What’s in the newest issue of MXA? How about complete and thorough tests of the 2021 KTM Gas Gas MC450F, 2021 KTM 450XCF Cross-Country, 2021 Yamaha YZ250 two-stroke, 2021 KTM 150SX two-stroke, 2021 Husqvaran FC350, 2021 Cylinder Workd YZ270 big-bore and a retro test of Kevin Windham’s 1997 Factory YZ125. And those are just the bike test! We also have a revealing interview with Steve Stackable, a feature on how MXA won the 24-Hours of Glen Helen endurance race (with the help of Mitch Payton) , flashback about the original Factory Edition—the 1963 Triumph Tiger Cub Scrambler and lots, lots more.

The GasGas MC 450F was the talk of the town this winter. You can call it a “Red KTM” all you want because that doesn’t hurt anyone in Austria’s feelings. Why not? It’s selling like crazy, is the exact same price as a KX450 or YZ450F and just take a look at it—it’s clean, sleek and blessed with all the Austrian traits that the Japanese brands wished they had (222-pound weight, billet steel hydraulic clutch, Brembo brakes, braided steel brake lines interchangeable throttle cams, foolproof air filter cage, CNC-machined hubs and that ultra-broad KTM engine).

Want to have a 125cc bike with the punch of excitement that 125s lack? You are in luck, KTM makes the 2021 KTM 150SX for just one purpose—to get you over that big double that your 125 just can’t clear. Okay, it also gives you a fighting chance to get a good start against 250 four-strokes and makes that lovely sound scares four-stroke riders world-wide.

To tell the truth, we could care less that Yamaha has only made modest changes to the YZ250 two-stroke over the last decade-and-a-half.  It was a great bike back in the day and it’s a great bike today. We don’t care if Yamaha doesn’t make any major changes to the YZ250 for the next five years—we’ll make them ourselves.

It looks like an off-road bike, but apart from the big gas tank, plush suspension and 18-inch rear, this is a KTM 450SXF motocross bike that is willing to lead two lives—one in the woods and one on the track. Think about, you too could own one bike that would allow you to do it all.

Imagine a 350cc bike that revs to 13,400 rpm, handles like its on a slot car track, is low enough for your feet to touch the ground and graced by the new XACT trampoline valve forks.  If you’ve never ridden a Husqvarna FC350, you need to beg a ride on one—it will change your life.

MXA TEAM TESTED: ASTERISK CARBON CELL 1 KNEE BRACE

Started by a group of athletes, including several motocross riders, Asterisk has been in the knee-brace game a long time. In 2017, not long after former AMA Pro Mike Beier and his team took over Asterisk, the wrecking crew started noticing a huge improvement in the durability of the Cell knee braces. The latest Asterisk Carbon Cell 1 (CC1) knee brace is manufactured from military- and aerospace-grade carbon fiber pre-preg. The Carbon Cell 1 is made in the United States to ensure the ultimate in build quality. Before launching the CC1, which is the slimmest brace MXA has ever tested, Asterisk spent two years designing, developing and testing the new brace. The test riders did their due diligence to help make the CC1 more durable while identifying areas that needed improvement. Asterisk paid close attention to the details of every element of its new brace.

The Asterisk CC1 carbon fiber knee brace is far more durable than previous products. The MXA wrecking crew stress tested the CC1 brace over a five-month period with countless hours of in-the-saddle abuse dished out by our top-tier test riders. After 60 hours of heavy usage on the braces, we put some fresh extension stops in and moved strap number one (behind the calf) around in the strap clip because it was showing some wear. The only other squawk we had was that after washing the braces and leaving them out in the sun, the glue that holds the condyle pads in place deteriorated, allowing a pad to fall off. This was easy to fix with a little superglue.

The patella cup is a three-piece design made from nylon 6 material that leaves no open gaps for that pesky handlebar to ding the top of your knee. The knee cup shape offers free movement with excellent flex and extension in current motocross pants, plus we didn’t feel it against our knee caps.
People often underestimate the importance of finding the right knee brace size. Wearing the incorrect-size knee brace will prevent the brace from being effective or, worse yet, may even increase your risk of injury. The Asterisk knee brace comes in a variety of sizes—from small to extra large. On Asterisk’s website, there is a sizing chart. Don’t skip this step before throwing down your cold hard plastic. The Asterisk CC1 features four Velcro-backed fastener straps. You also get knee sleeves and optional boot tethers. We didn’t use the boot tethers; however, they are proven to increase protection. These anti-rotation tethers are installed by drilling one small hole in the top of your boot. You then attach the tether to your boot and to the knee brace. This will help minimize rotational injuries to the leg by making the Asterisk brace and your leg move as one. With the four-strap system, you also have multiple ways to snug the straps for that custom feel. The neoprene pads are also adjustable to make the straps more comfortable. Asterisk’s website, under the “CC1 instructions,” details the proper strap tightening sequence for securing your brace. The Carbon Cell 1 is backed up by a one-year warranty from the date of purchase.

Asterisk braces have three different extension stops with 10, 20 and 30 degrees of motion to accommodate your personal preference. Asterisk also offers 2mm and 4mm condyle pads for correct knee width upon request. This year, Asterisk introduced Microcell kids’ braces for mini riders.

DIGITS: $799.95 (pair)—www.asterisk.com or (951) 268-6790.

MXA RATING: Ever since Mike Beier has taken over Asterisk, the entire line has improved in quality and durability. With the addition of the exceptional CC1 brace to Asterisk’s five-knee-brace lineup, the brand has been propelled to a whole new level. This is a compact, functional and durable knee brace.

MXA MOTO CHALLENGE QUIZ: WE WERE ALL YOUNG ONCE

Can you name these two old motocross stars? Yes, the both raced Yamahas to glory, but one of them originally rose to fame on an Ossa and the other left Yamaha for Honda only to return later. They both won Grand Prixs, but one of them was the AMA 500 National Champion. Can you name them. The answer is at the bottom of this page.

• MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: 2021 HUSQVARNA VITPILEN 401 AND SVARTPILEN 401

The 2021 Svartpilen or “Black Arrow” if your Swedish is rusty.

These are definitely not motocross bikes, but they are Husqvarnas. The 2021 Vitpilen 401 and Svartpilen 401, single-cylinder machines delivering a dynamic riding experience with different riding position, both the Vitpilen 401 and Svartpilen 401 share the 373.2cc single-cylinder engine, black powder-coated streel trellis frame, low weight, WP APEX suspension, hydraulic ByBre brakes and Bosch ABS technology.

The Vitpilen (White Arrow).

The Vitpilen has lower bars for a racier riding position.

The 2021 Vitpilen 401 translates in White Arrow in English. At 333 pounds it is a light weight street bike with an immersive riding position that guarantees helmet-hidden smiles. The Vitpilen 401 is powered by a 373cc single-cylinder engine that is remarkably compact. With 37 N/mm of torque from down low in the rpm range and a 6-speed gearbox, it is perfect for urban riding. The electronic fuel injection is operated by a ride-by-wire system and delivers a controlled and refined power.

Note the Svartpilen’s taller bars, rugged tires, ABS brakes,  tank rack and higher bars than its White Arrow brother.

The 335-pound Svartpilen 401 (Black Arrow in English) is a more rugged motorcycle that is shod with an aggressive tire tread and a tank-mounted luggage rack. It is perfect for deep urban exploration. The lightweight and narrow bodywork of the Svartpilen allows for seamless movement while riding. Its dark color, rugged tires and protective parts give the motorcycle a rigorous look to match its intentions.

MXA TEAM TESTED: OGIO RIG.T3 GEAR BAG

Ogio has set the standard for gear bags for years. Now, Ogio introduces the Rig.T3 bag to raise the bar once again. The Ogio Rig.T3 is a three-in-one kit that includes removable bags for your helmet and boots. Designed to carry everything you could need for a day at the track or for an international moto trip, the Rig.T3 is ready to go wherever your riding adventures take you. The Ogio Rig.T3 was designed with durability, protection and convenience in mind. The extra-wide opening allows you to easily access the entire gear bag at once. Without permanent partitions, you don’t have to worry about losing your favorite glove underneath the bottom of another compartment. The large lid holds four zip-up pockets, and if you don’t want to open the entire bag, you can unzip a smaller opening in the lid to remove your helmet or other items of the same or smaller size. There are four different handles that can be used for carrying the bag and a telescoping handle to be used when rolling it on heavy-duty wheels.

The Rig.T3 is the only gear bag that also comes with two separate removable and washable helmet and boot bags. We don’t usually use boot bags, but they come in handy for fly-away races. The bag also comes with a detached tool-pack holder and its own little pouch. The 17- by 24-inch changing mat is really nice for keeping your feet clean while changing clothes at the track, and its designated zip-up pocket on the exterior of the bag tucks the changing mat away nicely. The lid also features a mesh vent that can be opened or closed for airflow, which we appreciate.

A big responsibility of a gear bag is to protect gear, especially your helmet. You never want to compromise the integrity of your helmet by throwing it around in a flimsy helmet or gear bag. The Rig.T3 has thick foam padding built into the lid and sides, while the structural-load equalizing deck, called the sled, protects your gear from below and provides a strong base for sliding the bag into the bed of your truck or onto the airport conveyor belt. The helmet and boot bags are also well-padded for extra protection. We like the boot bag for fly-away trips, but we don’t need it for local riding days. It takes up a lot of space, and we’d rather just throw our boots into the back of the truck. The helmet bag was a catch-22. The padding protected our helmets well, but it was too big for an average helmet, which meant less space for the rest of our gear.

Unlike many other large gear bags that are made up of three separate compartments, the Rig.T3 has one open space with optional mesh dividers. The dividers can be erected and moved around to create three separate compartments for organization. If you don’t want the dividers, they can easily be secured to the walls or removed completely. The four pockets in the lid are great for storing tear-offs, gloves, goggles and other small items, while the helmet bag also has two pockets of its own.

DIGITS: $499.99 (helmet and boot bag included)—www.ogiopowersports.com or (800) 326-6325.

MXA RATING: Besides our quibbles with the separate bags, the new Ogio Rig.T3 is impressive. Ogio is known for quality and durability. At $499, the Rig.T3 is a big investment, but it’s a lot cheaper than the stuff you are putting in it.
