• YOU ASK FOR IT: THE LONG AWAITED 2023 KTM 300SX MOTOCROSS BIKE

MXA has built a lot of 300cc motocross bikes. we used to start with KTM 300XC off-road bikes, but they had too many compromises in gearing, suspension, weight and layout. Our best project racer used a KTM 250SX with a 300cc Power Parts kit (when they weren’t sold out). Now, KTM has done all the work for serious 300cc racers.

The single cylinder, 293cc, electric start, two-stroke engine has a 72mm by 72mm bore and stroke. A 39mm Keihin throttle body features advanced EFI technology for immediate throttle response and no more jetting.

A new electronic power valve offers improved mid-range power, while the fuel is delivered by TBI (Throttle Body Injection), not TPI (Transfer port Injection) which allows the rider to pre-mix his favorite oil and gas at 40:1. TBI depends on a TPS-sensor for better behavior while idling and for perfect fuel-air mixture.

Partnering with Keihin, Pankl and Brembo means that performance possibilities have expanded. The 2023 KTM 300SX has two maps (Map 1 is the standard mellow map and Map 2 is the aggressive map). An hour meter as standard (with electronic fuel injection status idiot light). There is even a low fuel light.

The all-new frame is hydro-formed, laser-cut and robot-welded. The wall thickness has been optimized to achieve improved specific rigidity in high stress areas such as the steering head and all new shock mounts. The KTM SX two-strokes have new parallel frame mounts. The design offers extra agility. The new inset footpegs have more surface area and, are even lighter than before. The hollow swingarm is die cast in a casting process that makes it even lighter.

SUZUKI’S OFFICIAL BYE-BYE MOTOGP—ELECTRIC BIKES SEEM TO BE THE REASON

Everyone in the MotoGP paddock knew that Suzuki was pulling out of the road racing after this season, just as they pulled out of MXGP a few years ago. Unfortunately for Suzuki, they signed a contract with Dorna committing them to racing in MotoGP until 2026. They can only quit after coming to terms with Dorna.

Suzuki Japan press release: “Suzuki Motor Corporation is in discussions with Dorna regarding the possibility of ending its participation in MotoGP at the end of 2022. Unfortunately, the current economical situation and the need to concentrate its effort on the big changes that the Automotive world is facing in these years, are forcing Suzuki to shift costs and human resources to develop new technologies. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to our Suzuki Ecstar Team, to all those who have supported Suzuki’s motorcycle racing activities for many years and to all Suzuki fans who have given us their enthusiastic support.”

The reference to “the Automotive world” certainly doesn’t insinuate they will be focusing their efforts into new two- and four-stroke motocross bikes–since the automotive world is all about electric cars. The implication is that they are being forced to shift their budgets from racing to new electric technologies.

• BREAKING NEWS! SHANE MCELRATH TO FILL-IN FOR DEAN WILSON AT ROCKSTAR HUSKY

Shane McElrath gets a reprieve the Rocky Mountain KTM fiasco.

The deal is only solid for the first four rounds, but could be extended based on Dean Wilson time frame to return to action after his gruesome St. Louis injury. McElrath hopes to do well enough at Pala, Hangtown, Thunder Valley and Mt. Morris to impress Husqvarna or some other team into keep him racing.

Shane McElrath said, “Words can’t describe my excitement for a chance to ride the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna! I’ve been training hard and have been hoping to get an opportunity to race some outdoors and I’m grateful that the team is giving me that opportunity! • BREAKING NEWS! JOEY SAVATGY TO FILL-IN FOR ADAM CIANCIARULO AT MONSTER KAWASAKI

Joey Savatgy KAwasakiJoey Savatgy get a second shot at Team Kawasaki.

Joey Savatgy will fill-in for Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Adam Cianciarulo until he is ready to return from a knee injury sustained earlier this season. With a proven history of 250cc Pro Motocross wins with Kawasaki, the team and Savatgy look forward to the No.17 rider competing at the front of the pack alongside the No.21 of Anderson. This a return of somewhat to Kawasaki, since Savatgy was on the Monster Energy Kawasaki team back in 2018-19. Which is best remember because Joey moved over to let Eli Tomac win $1,000,000 at the Monster Cup. Then, Savatgy was let go at the end of the 2019 season to make room for Adam Cianciarulo.

Joey Savatgy 2022 San Diego Supercross Practice-6747

Joey Savatgy said, “It’s a privilege to join the Monster Energy Kawasaki team for the upcoming Pro Motocross Championship. I’ve had a lot of success with the team in the past and I’m eager to continue building on that in the coming months. We’re only a few weeks shy of the season opener so we will aim to progress as the season goes on, but I’m confident my familiarity with the bike and the team will help speed that process along. I’m optimistic about what we can achieve together this summer.

• BREAKING NEWS! JEREMY MARTIN TO JOIN THE CLUBMX YAMAHA TEAM FOR 2023

Jeremy Martin ClubMX Yamaha 2023Jeremy Martin has a plan for 2023 and it is to do what he wants to do—and not go back to Star Yamaha again.

Martin plans to makes a splash one more time by signing on with the Muc-Off/FXR/ClubMX Yamaha team for 2023 to make one final push to win the 250 Supercrosss and 250 Motocross Championships. Arlington 2022 Supercross_Jeremy Martin

Jeremy Martin said, “As you can imagine, it was a difficult decision with all the offers on the table. I am familiar with the ClubMX program and it has been growing at a good pace for a reason. Their bikes are on point and I have a good comfort level with Brandon Haas and the crew The main deciding factor for me is the ClubMX facility itself. What most people don’t see or know about are the ten tracks, the training program, the fitness program .. all top notch.”

• BREAKING NEW! JEFFREY HERLINGS STILL NOT COMING TO AMERICA

Jeffrey Herlings wants to be the 450 World Champion in 2023—he doesn’t care about 2022 anymore.

No matter how hard the internet and powers that be want it to be true, current 450 World Champion, who has yet to race in defense of his MXGP title because of an injury is not coming the America to race the AMA Nationals. We should all be satisfied to get Tony Cairoli and Ryan Dungey to come out of retirement to give the Nationals a boost. Jeffrey’s foot injury was a very bad break and he isn’t worried about the 2022 season anymore, he wants to be ready for the 2023 MXGP series.

Jeffery Herlings_2021 MXGP-champ

Jeffrey Herlings said, “It’s a bummer not to run the #1 plate in MXGP or to think about the chance of doing the AMA Pro Nationals but we’ve made our decision and now my only goal is to get my body right, get pain-free and think about preparation for 2023. It feels like a long way away but I know it will also come quickly. Thanks to all my fans for the messages of support and of course to the best team in the sport.

BIKES YOU NEVER SEEN BEFORE: 1974 GUAZZONI MATTA CROSS 50

Aldo Guazzoni made and lost his fortune building small displacement street and dirt bikes. This 1974 Matta Cross 50 is what would be called a dual-sport today.

Founded by Aldo Guazzoni (1908-1978), a mechanic and Milan motorcycle  dealer, Guazzoni began building bikes in 1935 with a British-built, Calthorpe-powered, 500cc motorcycle that didn’t find much public support. Subsequently Guazzoni built three-wheelers for delivery, warehouses and transportation. After the World War II Guazzoni joined forces with the Fabbrica Bolognese Motori (FBM) group. It was a joint project between Victorio Minarelli and Franco Morini. Guazzoni was able to make an agreement to use FBM two-stroke engines in his line of small street bikes. In 1955 and 1956 the Guazzoni 50cc Torpedo dustbin road racer set 30 World Speed records at the Monza circuit. They continued to build 50cc street bikes and mopeds while looking for the golden fleece of sales.

The 50cc two-stroke rotary valve engine had a four-speed gearbox and produced approximately 10 horsepower. Note the crash guard welded to the frame to protect the side-mounted carb and air filter canister.

It wasn’t until 1960s, using an engine from a go-kart, that Guazzoni would have its first truly successful machine. In 1967 the 50cc Matta Cross was first dirt bike to roll down the assembly line. It was called the “Crazy” (which in Italian was “Matta”) and was equipped with a 50cc, rotary valve, two-stroke engine. It was the first-ever rotary valve engine in Italy at the time. The Matta Cross had a reverse cylinder with the exhaust pipe out of the back. Once the 50cc Guazzoni Crazy started selling the company began to focus on small displacement engines only (below 150cc).

Because Guazzoni’s clientele was typically Italian youth, the Matta Cross weighed 165 pounds. Europe had a popular 50cc motocross class back in the 1970s and that is what the Matta Cross was aimed at.

The Matta Cross was a hit with the young people of Italy and convinced Guazzoni to build 125cc and 150cc motorcycles in 1968. It came with lights so it could be used on the streets of Milan and Rome, but they were easily stripped off for racing. By building small displacement dirt and street bikes, a whole generation of future Italian and World Champions got their first taste of racing a motorcycle on a Guazzoni. In the 1971 the Matta Cross became a special racing model and got a new chassis—which was subsequently used in the 100cc and 125cc “RM72.”

This is the 1970 Guazzoni 50cc road racer.

The water-cooled, six-speed, rotary valve, 50c Guazzoni road racer. It was claimed to rev to 15,000 rpm.

Our featured 1974 Guazzoni Matta Cross 50 came out just before sales dipped precariously in the mid 1970s—when the Japanese invasion was in full swing. The company folded in 1976 and Aldo Guazzoni died in 1978 at the age of 60.
