There was a little drama in timed qualifying when the AMA started deleting rider’s fastest laps away from them if they couldn’t pass the post-qualifying sound test or if they jumped when they were suppose to stay on the ground. Jose Greco, Travis Bell (929) and Max Anstie got dinged on the sound test, while Topher Ingalls, Bryce Vallee and Beau Hudson had their fastest laps taken away for jumping when the red lights were on.

In the end, only Travis Bell didn’t make the cut for the night show.

Movin’ Marv set the fast time in the 250s with Zach Osborne (on what he says is his last Supercross race this year) in second. Amazingly, Martin Davalos and Nico Izzi set the exact same lap time (down to the thousandth) at 55.961 seconds in the battle for eighth.

Ryan Villopoto was fast?very fast.  Ryan Dungey kept him within a half second, but everyone outside of the top five was a full second off the Kawasaki riders pace. Making the top ten in 450 qualifying is very hard this year?even with the missing and injured riders not in the show. Mike Alessi didn’t make the top ten and was joined on the outside of the premier spots by Jake Weimer, Josh Hansen, Nick Wey, Broc Tickle and Jimmy Alberston. If it tells you anything, Marvin Musquin’s 250 time would have qualified him third in the 450 class.

The AMA Arenacross Series held its eighth round of the season on Friday night in Cedar Park, Texas. Team Faith KTM’s Kelly Smith won his first 450 main event of the year in front of Jeff Gibson and Tyler Bowers on Friday night. Typer Bowers came back on Saturday night to take the 450 win in front of Jeff Gibson. Smith’s teammate Kevin Johnson grabbed his third 250 West win of the season in front of his hometown crowd on Friday, while Lance Vincent took the win on Saturday.

A FEW KIND WORDS ABOUT CBS’ SUPERCROSS COVERAGE IN THE LA MARKET

This weekend Travis Pastrana teamed up with Michael Waltrip, Rob Kauffman and Rui Aguas in a Ferrari 458 Italia Grand-Am at the 24 Hours of Daytona. They finished 22nd in class and the race was only marred when Michael Waltrip put it into the tire barrier after 23 hours, 49 minutes of racing. “Getting to drive at Daytona is so cool, said Travis. “I won my first pro Supercross race here, and I’ve always dreamed of driving here. When I hit the high banks for the first time, it was ‘holy cow, here we come!’ It was also my first time in a Ferrari. I can’t complain.

“It might look easy on television but getting drivers in and out of the car quickly takes some practicing,” Pastrana said. “The real key for me will be to learn how to drive the Ferrari without burning through the tires. We have a lot of work to do.”

Ben Townley went 1-2-1 at the 51st Honda International New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix in Woodville in front of Cody Cooper, Josh Coppins, Justin McDonald and Hayden Clark. Australian Luke Burkhart won the 250 class in front of New Zealnd legend Darryl King and Scotty Columb.

GODSPEED MARK “TEX” ADAMS

Mark Adams, a part of the the Nitro Circus crew and James Stewart’s practice bike mechanic, was killed on Thursday night when he stopped to help a woman who had run out of gas on Interstate 4 in Volusia County, Florida. Another driver, in an SUV, drifted over the shoulder of the road the road and hit Adams. State troopers do not think alcohol was a factor.

First and foremost, they don’t make Supercross tracks like this anymore. It was rugged. It was whooped out and it was 100 percent sand. It was a glorious track, and when the AMA Supercross series came to Oakland in 1979, Jammin’ Jimmy Weinert pulled one of the biggest coups in motocross history?when he broke out a paddle tire and rode to victory. Paddle tires were banned later that year by the AMA.

Carmichael also said that his NASCAR opportunities for 2012 will be “somewhat limited. It’s tough when you get the rug pulled out from under you in late December. There’s not much to fall back on. It’s going to take some time to get things nailed down again, but hopefully, we can come back in 2013 and do it right.”

WITH THE DODGERS UP FOR SALE, WILL THE DODGER SUPERCROSS BE CANCELED IN THE FUTURE?

According to the L.A. Daily News, when current Los Angeles Dodger owner Frank McCourt sells the team in the next month or so, Supercross will most likely stay put. When ask if Supercross could be kicked out of the stadium by the new owners, Feld’s director of Supercross Dave Prater said, “I don’t think so, simply because the contract is signed. We’ll have to wait and see with the new owner and their desires. But I doubt it.”

The Dodgers chief revenue officer Michael Young said,”Financially, it has worked out great for both sides. I don’t see any reason why it would not be extended. I can’t think of any reason why someone would not want to continue with this event. It makes so much sense on the financial side and so much sense exposing our venue to a whole group that has never seen it before. It makes no sense to have this beautiful facility that can house this many people and only use it 81 days a year. I think it is a perfect fit and I don’t see why we should move away from the partnership.”

“Everyone is open-minded that stadiums are multi-use venues,” Prater said. “The days of only having baseball games in a stadium are over.” Of the 17 races in the supercross series, only three are raced in privately owned venues. The Jerry Jones-owned Cowboys Stadium and Daytona International Speedway are the other two.

TONY CAIROLI GETS A TOUR OF THE FERRARI FACTORY? BUT THEY GAVE VALENTINO ROSSI A F1 TEST RIDE

Red Bull/KTM’s Antonio Cairoli fulfilled a longstanding ambition by receiving a guided tour of the Ferrari headquarters from motocross fan and team boss, Stefano Domenicali.

The five- time World Motocross Champion was welcomed by all of the employees of Ferrari and Massimo Rivola, the sport director of the Ferrari F1 squad and shown around the main production departments of Ferrari, the museum and Enzo Ferrari’s office. “I am happy to have been able to see at first hand a company that is really special in Italy and the world,” Antonio said. “Particularly because, as an Italian rider, I have been passionate about this team since I was a kid. It has been a beautiful experience, especially for a Ferrari fan like I am. I want to thank Stefano Domenicali and all the staff of Ferrari for the invitation and for the warm welcome.”

At the end of his stay in Maranello, Cairoli revealed his Ferrari favorites: “Mine has always been the 599 GTB Fiorano. But, having been here, I was left speechless by the aggressive lines of the 458 Spider and the fabulous interior of the FF.” The factory tour ended with a visit to the Atelier, where Ferraris are personalised and Cairoli was able to see the innumerable combinations that can be put together to deliver a made-to-measure car. And before he left, the three-time 450 World Champion revealed that he will be returning the favour when the Ferrari team principal guests at a motocross Grand Prix. “Domenicali is a motocross fan and he has promised me that he will come to see a Grand Prix and I will be very happy to welcome him in the Motocross World Championship paddock,” a delighted Cairoli concluded.

THE AMERICAN HERO FATHER OF MOTOCROSS HERO ANDY JEFFERSON PASSES AWAY

The passing of a father is always painful for the family and MXA wants to take the time to acknowledge the passing of Husqvarna North America’s Andy Jefferson’s father Luther Jefferson this past week. As most motocross fans know, Andy Jefferson was the first black motocross racer to crack the color barrier in motocross by making making main events in the AMA Supercross series. Andy raced for Mitch Payton’s Pro Circuit team and his exploits are well known. But, what few people in motocross know is that Andy’s father also broke the color barrier 69 years ago as a member of the fabled Tuskeegee Airmen

When the 19-year-old Jefferson joined the Army in March 1943, he became one of the first black fighter pilots in the U.S. Air Force as a part of the Tuskegee Airmen. The all-black fighter group is credited with paving the way for the integration of the military (and the safe return home of American B-17 and B-24 bomber crews). Known as the “Red Tail Devils” by the Luftwaffe (because they painted the tails of their planes red), the Tuskegee Airmen destroyed or damaged more than 400 enemy aircraft, sank a German destroyer and earned an estimated 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses for acts of heroism.

“We had to fight on two fronts,” wrote Luther Jefferson in his journal. “Because the military was not integrated, we had to fight the American society and government to have the right to fight our European and Japanese enemies. We wanted to be treated as full-fledged Americans during WWII. We wanted to fight. We wanted to fly. But most of all we wanted the world to know that we were Americans, in every sense of the word.”

“Red Tails,” the George Lucas-produced movie about the Tuskegee Airmen is in theaters now.

The 88-year-old retired chief master sergeant died in his sleep at his Victorville home last week, just before “Red Tails” ? the George Lucas-produced blockbuster about the Tuskegee Airmen ? opened in theaters. Over his 30-year Air Force career, Jefferson logged more than 5000 hours in various aircraft, including P-40 and P-51 fighters while escorting heavy bombers while stationed in Italy during WW11.

Our sympathy goes to the Jefferson family and our gratitude goes to Luther Jefferson.

LAST WEEK WAS HONDA’S 200TH SUPERCROSS VICTORY…BUT IT WAS REALLY THE 202ND

It’s only fitting that the AMA thinks Marty Smith was the first-ever Honda Supercross winner, but it was really Marty Tripe sin 1973.

When Chad Reed won in Dodger Stadium last week it was Honda’s 200th Supercross victory (or at least Feld thinks it was). In truth it was their 202nd victory, but Feld didn’t count Marty Tripes at the 1973 Superbowl of Motocross or Ricky Ryan at the 1987 Daytona Supercross. We can forgive their faulty history, to some extent, because the first two years of Supercross were not part of a formal “Supercross” series?but only because the name Yamaha Super Series of Motocross had yet to be shortened into “Supercross.”  Given the truth about Tripes and Ryan?none of their other data on this subject can be considered accurate.

Justin Brayton (10) is the only remaining 2012 Honda rider who can add his name to the winner’s list.
